Transfer of an image through communication link is a very cumbersome job due to large image size and limited bandwidth. For that purpose, image encoding at transmitter side and decoding at receiver side is an essential task. The process of image encoding must be robust for sending accurate boundary of the original image to the receiver. Another important job in image processing is image understanding through recognition of shape, size, area, perimeter and other parameters of an object. One of the well known methods of image encoding is freeman chain coding (FCC). Here in this proposed algorithm we get better result from FCC method with prior modification by cubic interpolation which is useful for high resolution image contour transmission in a coded form through limited bandwidth and in less time. It also provides better result for image understanding and recognition purpose.

In this study, first, an Automated Target Recognition/Tracking (ATR, ATT) system is analyzed, developed and simulated on Matlab environment. Second, a new edge detection method is proposed which is obtained by combining two common edge detection algorithms. Finally, it is shown that freemanchain codding can be used in feature extraction stage of an ATR system. The system is tested for many different image databases, except for its classification and decision making part, which is still under development, and the results are verified by human eye. Note that, with the development of the classification part, the results will be able to verified with an objective criteria. On the other hand, the designed ATR system is planed to be optimized for an hardware and implemented on an FPGA device in a future work.

A new cotton recognition method is proposed in this paper. It provides parameters for motion of the manipulator so that it can acquire precise location information of cotton, identify cotton from surroundings correctly, and accordingly pick up them automatically. This method is based on color subtraction information of different parts of cotton. Furthermore, in order to increase accuracy rate of cotton recognition, dynamic freeman chain coding is used to remove noise. Experimental results show that the proposed method has good performance for cotton identification.

A Voronoi diagram of image elements provides an intuitive and appealing definition of proximity, which has been suggested as an effective tool for the description of relations among the neighboring objects in a digital image. In this paper, an implementation algorithm based on direct calculation of the freeman code of expanded contours is proposed for generating area Voronoi diagram of connected components. A closed convex polygon is utilized to bound each connected component, as an approximate representation, and the contour is represented using freeman chain coding, from which we can compute the corresponding freeman chain coding of its expanded contour directly, without recourse to the operation on pixels. While the contours iteratively expand outwards, the Voronoi diagram is constructed by the intersections of the expanded contours from different connected components. The experimental results show that our proposed approach significantly improves the speed of constructing area Voronoi diagram in digital images.
