The main objective of this work is to perform numerical analysis of an electromagnetic normally-closed direct-acting ball valve with cylindrical seat. A functional diagram is developed using the MATLAB/Simscape/SimHydraulics programming language. The principal elements of the functional diagram are: the fixed-displacement hydraulic pump, the ball valve which is driven by an electromagnetic actuator, the pressure-relief valve, pressure and volumetric flow rate measuring devices and the hydraulic pipes. Two sets of analyses are performed, the first one for an ideal case, without the effects that are associated with the hydraulic pipes and the second one for the real case, with these effects. The valve flow factor is presented, comparatively, for both cases, as well as the volumetric flow rates through the ball valve and the pressure relief valve, and finally the pressure drop in the valve.

The complex technical object usually can be described as a set of technological components (blocks). Its functional diagram can be represented by an oriented multi-graph. The vertices of the graph correspond to separate components (blocks) of a technical object. The blocks are characterized by design parameters. The graph may contain feedback loops. Blocks' output parameters can be determined from the values of their input parameters. The software developed in C++ language serves for calculating functional diagrams of steam boilers. The software determines also the values of derived output parameters from the design parameters values. It can be used to improve the technical characteristics of an object and determine control parameters for various modes of its operation. The calculation of the thermal scheme is based on the use of a model heat exchanger. In this case, the calculation of the thermal scheme is reduced to an iterative solution of a system of linear equations. A brief description of the software is provided.

Thermoeconomic analysis of hydrogen incorporation in a biodiesel plant

The paper develops a methodology that uses the thermoeconomic functional diagram applied for allocating cost of products obtained by the plant and afterwards demonstrates how it is possible to calculate the marginal cost in US$/kW h of the production. The methodology which was adopted includes the plant exergetic analysis development, the function system identification through physical diagram of the plant, construction of the Thermoeconomic functional diagram and the determination of the expressions for the plant's exergetic functions. The methodology also includes the determination of some parameters such as, investments, maintenance, operation, raw materials (canola oil, catalysts, methanol, glycerine and natural gas) and utility costs (electricity and steam water). As a result, it can be said that the simultaneously production of biodiesel and hydrogen is a suitable technology to minimize biodiesel production cost. About 6% of the thermoeconomic cost of biodiesel production was diminished when compared to the values previolisly published in the present literature. In relation to the hydrogen production thermoeconomic costs, the values are closer When they are compared to the ones which were identified in the literature. As a contribution to the scientific knowledge, it can be said that the obtained results shows the high performance of simultaneous biodiesel and hydrogen production, especially when glycerine is further processed into valuable energetic matter, in other words, considering economic aspects associated with the exergy conception, in order to develop a tool to assist the equipment operation, as well as to optimize the biodiesel plant design. Also shows that in a biodiesel production plant the hydrogen technology is more sustainable than the traditional one. The paper aims to innovate the production process of biodiesel by incorporating the hydrogen production process through glycerine steam reforming. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Monitoring of the thermoeconomic performance in an actual combined cycle power plant bottoming cycle

This paper presents a research project carried out by TPG (Thermochemical Power Group) of University of Genoa to develop innovative monitoring and diagnostics procedures and software tools for software-aided maintenance and customer support. This work is concerned with preliminary outcomes regarding the thermoeconomic monitoring of the bottoming cycle of a combined cycle power plant, using real historical data. The software is able to calculate functional exergy flows (y), their related costs (c) (using the plant functional diagram);after that non dimensional parameters for the characteristic exergonomic indexes (Delta c, Delta c*, Delta k*) are determined. Through a plant optimization (not described here) the reference conditions of the plant at each operating condition can be determined. Then, non dimensional indexes related to each thermoeconomic parameter are defined, in order to depict a "cost degradation", and thus a significant rise in the production cost of the main products of the bottoming cycle (steam and power). The methodology developed has been successfully applied to historical logged data of an existing 400 MW power plant, showing the capabilities in estimating the "cost degradation" of the elements of the BC over the plant life, and trends in the thermoeconomic indexes. COVID-19 is a disease caused by the SARS-CoV virus. It stands for severe acute respiratory syndrome, which affects the lungs. The process of replication and progression of the COVID-19 virus causes the formation of an excessive amount of reactive oxygen species and inflammation. Many studies have been carried out that have demonstrated that hydrogen has strong anti-inflammatory properties. It reduces hypotension and other symptoms by reducing inflammation and oxidative stress. Oxygen mixture, enriched with Hydrogen, -helps to reduce the resistance of the respiratory tract and frees up access to the pulmonary alveolus, which improves the penetration of oxygen into the lungs. Since hydrogen is an antioxidant, it helps to reduce the burden on the immune system, helps to maintain the body's health and its ability to quickly recover. When electrolysers are used to produce an oxygen-hydrogen mixture, alkaline mist and other impurities can enter the patient's lungs and cause poisoning and chemical burns. For this reason, the use of atomic hydrogen obtained from metal hydride sources for ventilation of the lungs will be more effective for treating COVID-19 than a molecular hydrogen-oxygen mixture from an electrolyzer. A functional diagram of a metal hydride source of atomic hydrogen to an artificial lung ventilator is shown. It is possible to create a series of hydrogen storage tanks of various capacities. Antenna arrays are used in many applications, such as space technology or long-distance communications. However, there is often an issue of large antennas' sizes for such systems. For example, such a problem is urgent in wideband arrays. This is important because then the distance between antennas in the equidistant arrays cannot be hold. Thus, the side diffraction maximums appear. Here we show that conversion to non-equidistant antenna arrays decreases radiation pattern's side lobes for direct radiation and deflection. Based on methods in the manuscript, we reduced side lobes of our array to -10dB compared to the main lobe. These methods allow calculating non-equidistant antenna arrays with high accuracy using information about antenna's characteristics. Thus, the side radiation is decreased and the antenna array efficiency is improved.

Mathematical models and corresponding functional diagrams of analog phase shifters of harmonic signals are proposed. The models and diagrams are precise for any finite values of input signals. Amplitude of output signals and phase shift between input and output signals of such diagrams are independent on a frequency, a signal transformation is fulfilled linearly without amplitude and frequency distortion. Derived circuits do not need fulfilling additional filtering of output signals.

Oil extraction screw presses are widely used in agriculture and food industry. In most cases, they are not equipped with complicated control systems due to the necessity of reducing their price and providing sufficient reliability. Therefore, such presses cannot reach the best efficiency (productivity, performance), while processing different seeds and kernels. The present paper is focused on development of the enhanced control allowing for monitoring the operational parameters of the screw press and adjusting them in accordance with user-defined technologically prescribed ones. The research methodology contains a thorough analysis of the press design and operational peculiarities, and the development of functional (block), circuit, and breadboard diagrams of the control system. In order to verify the initially stated ideas of control strategies, the simulation models of the control systems are implemented in the TinkerCAD and SolidWorks software, and the experimental prototype of the screw press is correspondingly improved. The presented control system and press regulation strategies can be effectively implemented by engineers and technologists while developing new and enhancing existing designs of screw presses.
