Real-world decision-making problems often consist in considering multiple and antithetic objectives. Therefore, multi-objective decision making (MODM) is a practical framework in implicational areas. In this paper, a fuzzy MODM problem is considered, where all of its parameters are defined fuzzily, and a solution inspired by multi-attribute VIKOR method is proposed. The proposed method tries to find fuzzy efficient solution for a problem by minimizing its combinational distance from an ideal and anti-ideal solution. This method can reveal the efficient frontier of the problem. Applicability of the proposed method is shown in an illustrative example and its application is summarized in an investment problem. Both examples show applicability of the proposed method.

Textile supply chain management considering carbon emissions and apparel demand fuzziness: a fuzzy mathematical programming approach

Purpose This paper studies the textile supply chain tactical planning under demand fuzziness through considering environmentally friendly and social responsibility. Hence, carbon emission in textile production and transportation is considered along with supply chain profitability. Design/methodology/approach The authors present a fuzzy multi-objective mathematical optimization model with credibilistic chance constraints to determine the fabric procurement quantities and production plan under uncertainty. The solution procedure makes use of credibility measure and fuzzy aggregation operator to attain compromise solutions. Findings A trade-off among carbon emissions, social performance and supply chain total profit is conducted. The analyses indicate the importance of transportation costs and carbon emission while determining the supply chain's tactical plan. Originality/value The textile supply chain's social sustainability alongside carbon emissions of textile operations is contemplated to provide apparel production and distribution logistics planning under uncertainty. In doing so, the authors propose a hybrid credibility-possibility mathematical optimization model to determine a compromise solution for textile managers.

Predicting and optimization of energy consumption using system dynamics-fuzzy multiple objective programming in world heritage areas

Energy consumption and efficiency are important in regional low-carbon economic development and environmental protection. This paper provides a system dynamics and fuzzy multi-objective programming integrated approach for the prediction of energy consumption and CO2 emissions at a regional level. First, a general system dynamics model is constructed to analyze an economy-energy system. To deal with the uncertainties and optimize the parameters in the system, a fuzzy multiple objective programming model is used. This decision support model is then applied to predict the energy consumption of a world heritage area in China during 2010-2020. The results reveal that the energy consumption and CO2 emissions increase dramatically with rapid economic growth. In the scenario herein considered, which is based on the proposed optimization model, a 1932% reduction was found in the energy intensity decreases from 0.88 tce/10(4) RMB to 0.71 tce/10(4) RMB, and a 23.26% reduction in the CO2 emission intensity, from 2.15 t/10(4) RMB to 1.65 t/10(4) RMB. Policy suggestions such as adjusting the industrial structure, enhancing local hydro-power and renewable energy and increasing investment in energy technology and efficiency are indicated for the promotion of a low-carbon oriented economy in world heritage areas. Cluster analysis for ethical portfolio optimization problem using fuzzy chance constrained programming

Choosing the greatest investment possibilities to maximize the value of one's stock investment has always been one of the primary concerns of investors. However, issues like human rights, and business ethics, are at the forefront of the public and political conversation in today's world of globalization and interdependence. Many financial experts, policymakers, and economic and social researchers view Islamic finance as a potential solution to prevent future crises. Consequently, there is a need for new models to facilitate this investment approach. In this study, we propose a new hybrid approach to portfolio selection which combines multiple methodologies like investor topology, cluster analysis, preference modeling and fuzzy multi-objective programming strategy. The proposed model is applied on 9 Tunisian mutual funds including conventional and ethical/Islamic funds in Tunisian financial market. The findings reveal that higher expected losses and greater proportions of ethical or Islamic stocks in a portfolio translate into better portfolio performance as measured by the Sharpe ratio. These findings confirm our hypothesis that ethical investments should be taken into account when developing investment strategies for conventional investors.

fuzzy multi-objective optimization for multi-site integrated production and distribution planning in two echelon supply chain

This paper addresses an integrated production and distribution planning problem for a two-echelon supply chain network comprising of multiple manufacturers serving multiple selling locations. A novel fuzzy multi-objective mixed integer programming model is formulated considering multi-product, multi-period, and multi-site manufacturing environment. Minimization of total cost, delivery time, and backorder level are the three fuzzy objectives represented by piecewise linear membership function. Three important production and distribution aspects viz. capacity of the heterogeneous transportation, backordering for unfulfilled demand, and set-up cost/time for different products at manufacturing site are incorporated in an integrated manner to represent closeness to the real-life problem. An illustrative example inspired from a real-world case of an automobile industry is taken to demonstrate analytical results of the proposed approach. The outcome of the research indicates the practical applicability of the approach. Sensitivity analysis on objective function values is conducted for analyzing the effect of change in aspiration levels of objective function values on decision maker's satisfaction level.

Establishment of a closed loop supply chain (CLSC) network has attracted immense significance due to government policies and societal demand for environmental consciousness. However, to enhance the financial and ecological impact of the network, the forward and reverse supply chain networks must integrate well so that decisions taken in both areas complement each other. In this study, we propose an eco-efficient CLSC design for extending the existing supply chain of an Indian firm that assembles inkjet printers. The network design is configured as a multi-objective model in a multi-period setting and is mathematically formulated into a mixed integer programming problem with fuzzy objectives. Fuzziness provides flexibility to the decision makers because they must accommodate the conflicting nature of the objectives. The fuzzy multi-objective model incorporates the firm's economic and environmental concerns into the decision making process by selecting environmentally responsible suppliers to procure components based on sustainable criteria, choosing appropriate recovery options for end-of-use (EOU) inkjet printers, and planning an efficient transportation network design for reducing the carbon emission of the distribution and collection activities. The uniqueness of the proposed fuzzy CLSC optimization model lies in providing an integrated decision making framework that can aid the manufacturer in making crucial strategic, tactical, and operational decisions of optimal selection of suppliers, component order allocation, recovery flow allocation, and vehicle routing planning. The novelty of the model also lies in simultaneously minimising the overall cost of the activities undertaken, maximizing the performance of the component suppliers and minimising the carbon emissions of the associated transportation activities. Water quality management of a stretch of river Yamuna: An interactive fuzzy multi-objective approach

This paper presents an Interactive fuzzy multi-objective Linear programming (IFMOLP) model for water quality management in a river basin. The IFMOLP model formulated will first evaluate dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations or DO deficits at a point in different reaches depending on the overall Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) concentration present in the respective drain. Subsequently, the model incorporates the aspirations and conflicting objectives of the decision maker (DM) by taking into consideration the aspects relevant for pollution control boards as well as dischargers responsible for generating wastewater. The uncertainty associated with specifying the water quality criteria (based on DO concentration or DO deficit) and treatment cost to remove pollution level is incorporated by interacting the decision maker. In this process DM is asked to specify the reference aspiration levels of achievement for the values of all membership functions generated with respect to each objective. This provides flexibility for the pollution control authorities and dischargers to specify their aspirations. IFMOLP model developed herein is then used in a case study for the evaluation of optimal BOD removal in different drains located across the river Yamuna at New Delhi, India. The presented model will simulate the allocation of waste load efficiencies with satisfactory results which will indicate usefulness of the model in managing more complex river basins along with better flexible policies of water management.

The fuzzy multi-objective distribution planner for a green meat supply chain

It is often a complex task for developing a product distribution plan of a supply chain (SC) network and a supportive decision tool can be useful for easing the role of decision-making. On the other hand, it has been increasingly becoming a demand to design a supply chain network considering the environmental impact as a new dimension as required by authorities in many countries. This paper describes a development of a product distribution planner for a three-echelon green meat supply chain (MSC) design in terms of issues including numbers and locations of facilities that should be opened in association with the product quantity flows. These issues were formulated into a fuzzy multi-objective programming model (FMOPM) with an aim to minimize the total cost of transportation and implementation, the amount of CO2 emissions in transportation and the distribution time of products from farms to abattoirs and from abattoirs to retailers, and maximize the average delivery rate in satisfying product quantity as requested by abattoirs and retailers. To optimize the four objectives simultaneously, three solution methods were investigated and used;Which are the LP-metrics method, the c-constraint method and the goal programming method. The best solution was determined using the Max-Min method by comparing the obtained Pareto solutions. A case study was examined based on the developed model that demonstrates its applicability in making an optimal product distribution plan in trade-offs among the four objectives.

A hybrid fuzzy approach for the closed-loop supply chain network design under uncertainty

A closed-loop supply chain (CLSC) network consists of both forward and reverse supply chains. In this paper a CLSC network is investigated that involves four echelons in a forward direction including suppliers, manufacturer, distribution center and demand market, and three echelons in a backward direction including disposal, rework and collection centers. This paper presents a bi-objective model in order to design a network of bi-directional facilities in logistics network under uncertainties. Its objectives are to minimize the total costs as well as the total defective rate, disposal rate and pollution production rate. To solve the model, a hybrid solution approach is applied that combines fuzzy possibilistic programming and fuzzy multi-objective programming. Furthermore, in order to illustrate the validity of the model and applicability of the proposed solution approach, numerical experiments and the related sensitivity analysis are provided. Finally, the conclusion is provided.
