Active noise control (ANC) system based on adaptive algorithm is an effective technique for acoustic noise reduction. fxlms is a fairly robust algorithm but it gives inferior performance when secondary path is time varying, as a result, online secondary path modeling has been used. A variable step-size least mean square (VSS-LMS) algorithm with noise power scheduling is implemented in this paper to minimize the noise level. Computer simulations are done in MATLAB and substantial noise reduction in ambulance siren is obtained. The algorithm is implemented to reduce ambulance siren noise causes deterioration in the health of patient lying inside. The result shows that Active noise control (ANC) system using VSS-LMS with noise power scheduling reduces ambulance siren noise considerably by 49 dB.

In the case of single-channel ANC systems, the reference signal is picked up by a reference microphone, and the "antinoise" is generated by a canceling loudspeaker. This antinoise signal propagates downstream to cancel the unwanted noise. However it also propagates upstream and corrupts the reference signal. This is called acoustic feedback. The presence of strong acoustic feedback degrades the convergence speed and in worst case the ANC system may become unstable. In this paper, we proposed modified method for improved performance. The computer simulations are carried out, which demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, in comparison with the existing methods.

This papers aims to develop an Adaptive Feedback Active Noise Control (AFB-ANC) system comprising two adaptive filters. The first adaptive filter is the same as found in the traditional AFB-ANC systems and is adapted using the classical Filtered-x Least Mean Square (fxlms) algorithm. The stability of the fxlms algorithm requires filtering the reference signal via a 'good' estimate of the cancellation path (CP) present between the cancellation loudspeaker and the error microphone. Since the CP may be time-varying in the practical situations, the task of the second adaptive filter is to provide estimation of the CP during operation of the AFB-ANC system. The Cancellation-Path Estimation (CPE) filter is excited by a probe signal and is adapted using a delay-based Normalized Least Mean Square (NLMS) algorithm. The proposed system is equipped with a simple strategy to monitor the convergence status of the CPE filter. The developed strategy allows to inject a large (small) probe signal during the transient (steady) state of the AFB-ANC system. Computer simulation are carried out which demonstrate the effective performance of the developed system.

The performance of an ANC system depends on the convergence factor. A suitable value of convergence coefficient is extremely important as it impacts both the speed of convergence and the stability of the adaptive algorithm. Traditionally, in active noise control systems fixed convergence factor is used. In this paper, a novel approach of time-varying convergence factor mu is used and the results are compared with traditional feedforward and feedback noise control systems. This algorithm leads to faster convergence and provides reduced mean-squared error compared to the conventional fixed parameter algorithm.

Active noise control (ANC) is gaining ever-increasing attention owing to its powerful ability to attenuate low-frequency noise. The computational complexity of an ANC system may directly affect its computational efficiency, control performance, and hardware costs. Therefore, the focus of this paper is mainly on discussing the development of ANC systems with emphasis on reducing computational complexity. The ANC systems are classified into two groups of narrowband and broadband systems. The computational complexity analysis is provided to show the computational merit of each system with respect to the conventional ANC systems. In addition, numerical simulations are performed to evaluate the convergence speed and noise reduction performance of the considered systems. The results show that, in the narrowband ANC systems, the LFE-NANC, CFX-NANC and BFX-NANC systems enjoy better overall performance in terms of the computational complexity, convergence speed and steady-state error, and in the broadband ANC systems, the DF-BANC system has the lowest computational complexity but cannot effectively attenuate the broadband noise with high spectral dynamics, whereas the DS-BANC and MDS-BANC systems can. This study provides in-depth insight into current typical low-complexity ANC systems.

MIMO Multi-Frequency Active Vibration Control for Aircraft Panel Structure Using Piezoelectric Actuators

Undesirable vibration of aircraft panel structures has a significant impact on the safety of their occupants and the operational reliability of various systems. The traditional time-domain controller based on the parallel multi-frequency filtered-x least mean square (fxlms) control algorithm is simple and effective. However, the mutual influence of convergence steps and the induced harmonic components will limit its performance. An improved parallel multi-input multi-output multi-frequency fxlms (MIMOMF-fxlms) algorithm is proposed, considering the multi-input multi-output (MIMO) control requirement of the aircraft panel structure active vibration control (AVC) system and its inevitable channel coupling phenomenon. The feedback error signal and the control channel model are processed by frequency division in the MIMOMF-fxlms algorithm, so that the fxlms algorithm of each control channel runs independently, effectively avoiding mutual interference between convergence steps and the generation of induced harmonic components. Simulation and experimental research on multi-frequency AVC of the panel structure model is performed using a new type of piezoelectric stack actuator. The test results show that the proposed controller reduces the vibration level of each observation point by more than 98%, and the vibration responses of the first two-order frequency component are significantly suppressed, which also has strong adaptability and anti-noise ability.

A multichannel active noise control (ANC) system has been developed for a vehicle application, which employs loudspeakers to reduce the low-frequency road noise. Six accelerometers were attached to the vehicle structure to provide the reference signal for the feedforward control strategy, and two loudspeakers and two microphones were applied to attenuate acoustic noise near the headrest of the driver's seat. To avoid large computational burden caused by the conventional time-domain filtered-x least mean square (fxlms) algorithm, a time-frequency domain fxlms (TF-fxlms) algorithm is proposed. The proposed algorithm calculates the gradient estimate and filtered reference signal in the frequency domain to reduce the computational requirement, while also updates the control signals in the time domain to avoid delay. A comprehensive computational complexity analysis is conducted to demonstrate that the proposed algorithm requires significantly lower computational cost as compared to the conventional fxlms algorithm.

Piezoelectric adaptive active vibration suppression for wind-tunnel model support sting

Due to flow separation and turbulence, the slender cantilever aircraft model support system is prone to low-frequency and large-amplitude resonance in the wind tunnel tests, resulting in a decrease in test data quality, a limited test envelope, and even threatening the safe operation of the wind tunnel. A piezoelectric active damping system based on the filtered-x least mean square algorithm is proposed to effectively suppress the vibration of the wind-tunnel model support sting. Firstly, a modified variable step least mean square algorithm is proposed to address the issue that the fixed-step algorithms limit each other in terms of convergence speed and steady-state error. Following that, a variable step filtered-x least mean square algorithm based on reference signal reconstruction is developed, and the corresponding feedback controller is designed to perform the ground tests of the piezoelectric active damping system for the wind-tunnel model support sting. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has a faster convergence speed and lower steady-state error than the traditional algorithms, as well as strong anti-noise and adaptive control abilities that significantly improve the active vibration suppression effect of the wind-tunnel model support sting.

Adaptive active vibration control for composite laminated plate: Theory and experiments

In this paper, an analysis model of adaptive active vibration control system of composite laminated plate using macro fiber composite (MFC) piezoelectric patches is presented, and the experimental testing is carried out. Electromechanical coupling equations of the composite laminated plate are established by considering the influence of the mass and stiffness of MFC piezoelectric patches. The adaptive active vibration control scheme for composite laminated plate based on the filtered-x least mean square (fxlms) algorithm is proposed. The accuracy of the present analysis model is validated by the results of experimental test and finite element method (FEM). It can be found that the vibration responses nearby the first and second natural frequencies of the composite laminated plate can be rapidly and greatly suppressed by the adaptive active control system and experimental test. Moreover, the dynamic responses of the composite plate under multi-frequency excitation and random excitation can be fast controlled by the presented adaptive active control system. The novelty of this work is that a theoritical analysis model of adaptive closed-loop control system based on the MFC piezoelectric patches is presented for vibration suppression of composite laminated plate, and the effectiveness of the proposed adaptive active model are validated by experimental testing.

Narrowband feedback active noise control systems with secondary path modeling using gain-controlled additive random noise

This paper investigates estimation of the secondary path (SP) during the online operation of the filtered-x least mean square (fxlms) algorithm-based feedback active noise control (FBANC) systems. The proposed method develops upon a previous work where two adaptive filters were used, one for active noise control (ANC) and the other for secondary path modeling (SPM). The proposed method essentially comprises a similar structure as that of the previous method. The objectives here are to suggest modifications to improve upon the slow convergence of SPM filter and the noise reduction (NR) performance in the previous method. The key idea is to employ a gain-controlled modeling signal (generated from the additive random noise signal) mixed with the cancellation signal. The gain-factor for the modeling signal is adjusted such that a large-level modeling signal is used during the transient state of the ANC system. This improves the converge of the SPM filter. As the ANC system converges, the level of the modeling signal is reduced to achieve good NR performance. Besides controlling the level of the modeling, the gain control parameter is employed in adjusting the various other parameters too, viz. fixed step-size, regularization parameter, convergence monitoring parameter, while computing the time-varying normalized step-size for the SPM filter. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method (equipped with the proposed modifications) outperforms the previous method and yet with a negligible increase in the computational complexity.
