PurposeTo introduce a multiplatform, Python language-based, development environment called graphical programming interface for prototyping MRI techniques. MethodsThe interface allows developers to interact with their scientific algorithm prototypes visually in an event-driven environment making tasks such as parameterization, algorithm testing, data manipulation, and visualization an integrated part of the work-flow. Algorithm developers extend the built-in functionality through simple code interfaces designed to facilitate rapid implementation. ResultsThis article shows several examples of algorithms developed in graphical programming interface including the non-Cartesian MR reconstruction algorithms for PROPELLER and spiral as well as spin simulation and trajectory visualization of a FLORET example. ConclusionThe graphical programming interface framework is shown to be a versatile prototyping environment for developing numeric algorithms used in the latest MR techniques. As the engineering education and computer technologies for industry merge, the opportunities for teaching and learning will also expand. In such context, a large number of academic courses that teach electrical engineering concepts have incorporated the graphical programming as educational tool for student use. The current paper discuses some of the most popular graphical programming packages, identifies two alternative solutions and shows how the virtual instrumentation approach pioneered by LabVIEW may enhance the electrical engineering curricula.

We describe a software program designed to control a broadband pulse nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometer used in zero-field NMR studies of magnetic metals. The software is written in the graphical language Labview. This type of programming allows modifications and the inclusion of new routines to be carried out easily by the non-specialist, without changing the basic structure of the program. The program corrects for differences in the gain of the two acquisition channels (U (phase) and V (quadrature)), and automatic baseline subtraction. We present examples of measurements of NMR spectra, spin-echo decay (T-2), and quadrupolar oscillations, performed in magnetic intermetallic compounds.

In recent years, an increasing number of school children is beginning to learn about robotics in the classroom in order to stir their interest in STEM professions. Teachers rely on simple educational robots and intuitive programming environments and graphical programming environments have become a frequent starting point for young robotics newbies. However, currently available tools do often not sufficiently support teachers and students in the classroom. In this study, we evaluate programming environments for educational robots;our results point to the need of lowering the complexity of tools as well as of incorporating combinations of web and cloud technologies, embedded systems and communication concepts into these environments. The technical part of this work presents Open Roberta - an open source based addition to commercial educational robot environments that addresses these needs.

The development of conventional augmented reality (AR) works typically involves complex environment setup, programming development, high costs, and long development cycles, requiring developers to possess certain technical expertise and facing a high entry barrier. To address these challenges and reduce the difficulty of AR work development, this paper proposes a method for creating AR works based on graphical programming. A prototype system is developed to facilitate visual creation. The proposed method involves importing models and AR markers to construct the elements of the work. Subsequently, model parameter variables are designed to enable graphical programming and establish data associations between the work's elements and the logic function algorithm. Additionally, the front-end page layout of the work can be conducted, and the binding of front-end buttons to back-end graphical programming trigger events can be realized. The prototype system is developed using the AR-Foundation and Unity3D engine. Several case studies are presented to demonstrate the feasibility and versatility of this AR creation method.

Prediction of bending parameters and automated operation planning for sheet-metal bending orientated to graphical programming

The core of graphical programming for sheet-metal bending is operation planning based on parameter identification, which can directly determine the bending quality and efficiency. Given this, the proposed graphical programming system and method can predict the inner arc radius of bending oriented to programming demands and optimize multi-step bending operations. At first, a neural network model based on multi-layer perceptron (MLP) was established, considering the number of neurons and hidden layers. In the bending process a fitness function was defined, and the discrete particle swarm optimization (DPSO) was improved using the adaptive inertia weight and the genetic algorithm (GA). Finally, the operation planning of 10-step and 20-step bending was simulated, and bending tests were conducted on sheet-metal workpieces for verification. The results show that the algorithm's maximum positive error and minimum negative error in predicting the arc radius are 0.12 mm and - 0.16 mm, respectively. When there are 10 bending steps, the particle swarm optimization-genetic algorithm (PSO-GA) converges after only ten evolutions;when the bending steps increase to 20, the fitness value finally stabilizes at 1.31. The optimal operations of the experimental six-step bending part are 6 -> 5 -> 4 -> 3 -> 1 -> 2. This result indicates that the workpiece is turned over three times and turned around once in the sheet-metal bending process, which is consistent with the simulation, thus verifying the bending efficiency and accuracy.

A capsule-unified framework of deep neural networks for graphical programming

Recently, the growth of deep learning has produced a large number of deep neural networks. How to describe these networks unifiedly is becoming an important issue. To make difference from capsule networks, we first formalize neuronal (plain) networks in a mathematical definition, give their representational graphs, and prove a generation theorem about the induced networks of the graphs. Then, we extend plain networks to capsule networks, and set up a capsule-unified framework for deep learning, including a mathematical definition of capsules, an induced model for capsule networks and a universal backpropagation algorithm for training them. Moreover, we present a set of standard graphical symbols of capsules, neurons, and connections for application of the framework to graphical programming. Finally, we design and implement a demo platform to show the graphical programming practicability of deep neural networks in mouse-click drawing experiments.

Investigating Surface Finish for Material Extrusion Process using graphical programming Tools

The additive manufacturing material extrusion surface finish is periodic in nature, which has been explored by researchers employing either rectangular or elliptical bead models. The shallow inclination angle configurations exhibit the greatest ‘staircase impact’, but in addition to this, the assumed bead geometry influences physical distribution of undercuts and voids. Depending on the initial assumptions, the predictive model may not reflect a valid build configuration. Consequently, graphical programming tools are employed to develop rectangular, obround, and elliptical bead sets, which allows the bead shape and inclination angle to be altered dynamically for a wide range of configurations. The surface finish is predicted for selected bead geometry while considering the critical angle (multiple beads on the base layer) impact. © 2016

Tinkertoy is a graphic interface to Lisp, where programs are 'built' rather than written, out of icons and flexible interconnections. It is exciting because it represents a computer/user interface that can easily exceed the interaction speed of the best text-based language editors and command languages. It also provides a consistent framework for interaction across both editing and command execution. Moreover, because programs are represented graphically, structures that do not naturally conform to the text medium can be clearly described, and new kinds of information can be incorporated into pro- grams and program elements. There is widespread evidence to show that many first year engineering students have either a strong dislike for programming or an inability to write effective programs. This poses a problem, since many departments require their students to take some form of introductory programming as part of their first year in engineering. One possible reason why many engineering students have such difficulty with programming and the related concepts is that many engineers tend to fall heavily on the "visual learner" side of the Felder-Silverman Learning Styles Model. Since traditional, text-based programming languages, and the predominantly text-based way in which they are taught, do not align with the learning styles of these students, their ability to understand and implement the necessary concepts in an actual program may be drastically reduced. This paper discusses a work in progress investigating the use of graphical programming languages as a means for introducing programming concepts and catering to the visual learning style of most engineering students.
