Many existing solutions focus on point-to-point shortest-path queries in road networks. In contrast, only few contributions address the related single-source shortest-path problem, i.e., finding shortest-path distances from a single source s to all other graph vertices. This work extends graph separator methods to handle this specific problem and its one-to-many variant, i.e., calculating the shortest path distances from a single source to a set of targets T subset of V. This novel family of so-called grasp algorithms provides exceptional preprocessing times, making them suitable for dynamic travel time scenarios. grasp algorithms also efficiently solve range / isochrone queries not handled by previous approaches.

Flowshop scheduling problem with parallel semi-lines and final synchronization operation

This paper deals with a particular variant of the flowshop scheduling problem motivated by a real case configuration issued from an electro-electronic material industry. The shop floor environment is composed of two parallel semi-lines and a final synchronization operation. The jobs must follow the same technological order through the machines on each parallel semi-line. However, the operations on each semi-line are independent. The final synchronization operation, operated by a dedicated machine, can only start when the job is finished on both semi-lines. The objective is to determine a schedule that minimizes the makespan for a given set of jobs. Since this problem class is NP-hard in the strong sense, constructive heuristic procedures and metaheuristics methods are introduced to achieve optimal or near-optimal solutions. The performances of the proposed grasp and the Simulated Annealing algorithms are evaluated and compared with the adaptation of two well-known heuristics. Computational experiments show that the proposed metaheuristics provide very good results in low computational times. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Maximally disjoint solutions of the set covering problem

This paper is concerned with finding two solutions of a set covering problem that have a minimum number of variables in common. We show that this problem is NP-complete, even in the case where we are only interested in completely disjoint solutions. We describe three heuristic methods based on the standard greedy algorithm for set covering problems. Two of these algorithms find the solutions sequentially, while the third finds them simultaneously. A local search method for reducing the overlap of the two given solutions is then described. This method involves the solution of a reduced set covering problem. Finally, extensive computational tests are given demonstrating the nature of these algorithms. These tests are carried out both on randomly generated problems and on problems found in the literature.

The integrated planning of outgoing coil selection for retrieval, multi-crane scheduling, and location assignment to the incoming and blocking coils in steel coil warehouses

In this paper, the problem of scheduling crane -operated warehouses in a triangle stacking style is investigated. In a steel supply chain, warehouses play a significant role in establishing a connection between the producer and the customers. Therefore, improving their performance results in a competitive advantage in the supply chain. One of the challenges of steel coil warehouses is the selection of outgoing coils out of the candidate coils for retrieval. Despite its importance, this problem has not been investigated in the studies relevant to steel coil warehouses. In this study, in addition to the selection of outgoing coils, sequencing of the operations on the incoming, outgoing, and blocking coils, location assignment to the incoming and blocking coils, and crane scheduling are considered in an integrated manner. First, a mixed integer linear programming model is proposed. Further, a Greedy heuristic algorithm and two metaheuristics are developed to solve large -sized instances of the problem. Metaheuristics include a Greedy Randomized Adaptive Search Procedure (grasp) and a hybrid algorithm that combines Ant Colony System with the grasp (ACS -grasp). Finally, performances of the proposed algorithms are compared over randomly generated instances as well as instances which are generated based on the real data obtained from Isfahan's Mobarakeh Steel Company. To conduct this analysis, various performance evaluation metrics are applied. Computational results indicate that ACS -grasp converges slower than grasp, but is more reliable and efficient. On the other hand, in large -sized instances, the Greedy algorithm runs extremely fast and can find solutions which are comparable to the metaheuristic solutions.

Greedy randomized adaptive search procedure for joint optimization of unicast and anycast traffic in spectrally-spatially flexible optical networks

The volume of data traffic in backbone networks is increasing at a speed that exceeds the growth rates of capacities offered in currently used wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) networks. As a short term solution to the potential capacity crunch, the concept of flexible-grid elastic optical networks is nowadays implemented in many backbone networks. However, in a longer term the space division multiplexing (SDM) technology is the most promising solution for satisfying the capacity requirements in future optical networks. The combination of both technologies allows for realization of spectrally-spatially flexible optical networks (SS-FONs). In this paper, we focus on a network scenario in which two different types of traffic flows are carried over an SS-FON, namely, unicast and anycast flows. Unicast flows are used for basic one-to-one communication, while anycast flows defined as one-to-one-of-many communication are related to the network traffic generated in data centers and the fact that data centers placed in different network locations can provide the same service or content to network users. For provisioning of lightpaths for both types of traffic, we address the basic optimization problem in SS-FONs, which is routing, space and spectrum allocation (RSSA). The aim of this study is threefold. First, we propose an effective metaheuristic method based on the greedy randomized adaptive search procedure (grasp) to solve the RSSA problem. Second, we compare performance of the proposed grasp method against reference optimization approaches. Finally, we present and discuss a wide range of experiments focused on analysis of SS-FONs with joint unicast and anycast traffic. The main conclusions are: (i) the proposed grasp algorithm provides results very close to optimal (only 0.5% optimality gap) for smaller problem instances and significantly outperforms other heuristics for larger problem instances (in average around 6.8% better than the reference simulated annealing

The Ocean and Land Color Instrument (OLCI) onboard the Copernicus Sentinel-3A satellite is a medium-resolution and multi-spectral push-broom imager acquiring radiance in 21 spectral bands covering from the visible to the far near-infrared. These measurements are primary dedicated to land & ocean color applications, but actually include also reliable information for atmospheric aerosol and surface brightness characterization. In the framework of the EUMETSAT funded study to support the Copernicus Program, we describe the retrieval of aerosol and surface properties from OLCI single-viewing multi-spectral Top-Of-Atmosphere (TOA) radiances based on the Generalized Retrieval of Atmosphere and Surface Properties (grasp) algorithm. The high potential of the OLCI/grasp configuration stems from the attempt to retrieve both aerosol load and surface reflectance simultaneously using a globally consistent high-level approach. For example, both over land and ocean surfaces OLCI/grasp uses 9 spectral channels (albeit with different weights), strictly the same prescribed aerosol models and globally the same a priori constraints (though with some differences for observations over land and ocean). Due to the lack of angular multi-viewing information, the directional properties of underlying surface are strongly constrained in the retrieval: over ocean the Fresnel reflection together with foam/whitecap albedo are exclusively computed using a priori wind speed;over land, the Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF) is slightly adjusted from a priori values of climatological Ross-Li volumetric and geometric terms. Meanwhile, the isotropic reflectance is retrieved globally under mild spectral smoothness constraints. It should be noticed that OLCI/grasp configuration employs innovative multi-pixel concept (Dubovik et al., 2011) that enhance retrieval by simultaneously inverting large group of pixels. This paper discusses how many fingers are necessary and sufficient;for capturing a;pyramidal-like object placed on a table under the gravitational field. Allaying that the contact friction is small enough to ensure that any direct grasp may fail in achieving an equilibrium grasp,, we prove that a planar two-fingered hand are necessary and sufficient for achieving the task for an idealized 2D, triangle object placed vertically on a table, We also consider 3D pyramidal-like objects, and prove that a spatial two-fingered hand are necessary and sufficient for achieving the task.

An Elastic Energy Management algorithm in a Hierarchical Control System with Distributed Control Devices

In modern Electric Power Systems, emphasis is placed on the increasing share of electricity from renewable energy sources (PV, wind, hydro, etc.), at the expense of energy generated with the use of fossil fuels. This will lead to changes in energy supply. When there is excessive generation from RESs, there will be too much energy in the system, otherwise, there will be a shortage of energy. Therefore, smart devices should be introduced into the system, the operation of which can be initiated by the conditions of the power grid. This will allow the load profiles of the power grid to be changed and the electricity supply to be used more rationally. The article proposes an elastic energy management algorithm (EEM) in a hierarchical control system with distributed control devices for controlling domestic smart appliances (SA). In the simulation part, scenarios of the algorithm's operation were carried out for 1000 households with the use of the distribution of activities of individual SAs. In experimental studies, simplified results for three SA types and 100 devices for each type were presented. The obtained results confirm that, thanks to the use of SAs and the appropriate algorithm for their control, it is possible to change the load profile of the power grid. The efficacious operation of SAs will be possible thanks to the change of habits of electricity users, which is briefly described in the article.

Currently, ensuring the correct functioning of the electrical grid is an important issue in terms of maintaining the normative voltage parameters and local line overloads. The unpredictability of Renewable Energy Sources (RES), the occurrence of the phenomenon of peak demand, as well as exceeding the voltage level above the nominal values in a smart grid makes it justifiable to conduct further research in this field. The article presents the results of simulation tests and experimental laboratory tests of an electricity management system in order to reduce excessively high grid load or reduce excessively high grid voltage values resulting from increased production of prosumer RES. The research is based on the Elastic Energy Management (EEM) algorithm for smart appliances (SA) using IoT (Internet of Things) technology. The data for the algorithm was obtained from a message broker that implements the Message Queue Telemetry Transport (MQTT) protocol. The complexity of selecting power settings for SA in the EEM algorithm required the use of a solution that is applied to the NP difficult problem class. For this purpose, the Greedy Randomized Adaptive Search Procedure (grasp) was used in the EEM algorithm. The presented results of the simulation and experiment confirmed the possibility of regulating the network voltage by the Elastic Energy Management algorithm in the event of voltage fluctuations related to excessive load or local generation.

Novel Functionalities of Smart Home Devices for the Elastic Energy Management algorithm

Energy management in power systems is influenced by such factors as economic and ecological aspects. Increasing the use of electricity produced at a given time from renewable energy sources (RES) by employing the elastic energy management algorithm will allow for an increase in "green energy" in the energy sector. At the same time, it can reduce the production of electricity from fossil fuels, which is a positive economic aspect. In addition, it will reduce the volume of energy from RES that have to be stored using expensive energy storage or sent to other parts of the grid. The model parameters proposed in the elastic energy management algorithm are discussed. In particular, attention is paid to the time shift, which allows for the acceleration or the delay in the start-up of smart appliances. The actions taken by the algorithm are aimed at maintaining a compromise between the user's comfort and the requirements of distribution network operators. Establishing the value of the time shift parameter is based on GMDH neural networks and the regression method. In the simulation studies, the extension of selected activities related to the tasks performed in households and its impact on the user's comfort as well as the response to the increased generation of energy from renewable energy sources have been verified by the simulation research presented in this article. The widespread use of the new functionalities of smart appliance devices together with the elastic energy management algorithm is planned for the future. Such a combination of hardware and software will enable more effective energy management in smart grids, which will be part of national power systems.
