Effects of different types of guidance on students' motivation and learning in a remote laboratory in computer science

Background and Context: During online learning, it is essential to provide instructional guidance to support learning. However, guidance can be given in different forms and quantities. Thus, one important challenge is to provide the right amount and type of instructional guidance. Objective: The aim of the study is to investigate types of guidance which are effective for students with heterogenous programming knowledge and skills solving programming tasks in a remote laboratory. Method: We carried out two studies with a single factor pre-post-design with guidance (basic/enhanced) as a between-subjects factor. Findings: In study 1, we implemented enhanced guidance in the form of prompts in the introduction to the tasks. Whereas we found no differences in learning outcome or extraneous cognitive load, students in the enhanced guidance group reported less intrinsic motivation, and logfiles revealed a lower programming performance. In study 2, we implemented enhanced guidance in the form of adaptive just-in-time explanations for error streaks. Enhanced guidance led to a lower extraneous cognitive load, and this way increased learning outcome.

This study examined the mediating role of parental cognitive engagement and parental guidance on the associations between family socioeconomic and home environment resource risk factors and children's literacy and social skills in Guyana. The sample consisted of 1208 families from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds drawn from the 2019 to 2020 country-level UNICEF MICS data. Caregivers provided assessments of socioeconomic conditions, educational resources in the home environment, cognitive engagement, parental guidance and children's literacy and social skills. Family socioeconomic risk had an indirect association with social skills through cognitive engagement. Home environment educational resource risk had indirect associations with children's literacy and social skills through parental guidance. Findings are discussed in terms of identifying protective factors within families in low- and middle-income Caribbean countries that can better inform intervention efforts geared at reducing risks to childhood development.

Background: Racially marginalised groups are underserved in healthcare and underrepresented in health research. Patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE) is established as the method to ensure equity in health research. However, methods traditionally employed in PPIE can lead to the exclusion of some communities and exacerbation of existing inequalities, highlighting the need to develop inclusive processes for more inclusive community involvement in health research. We aimed to produce guidance to promote good practice for inclusive involvement of racially marginalised community groups in health research via public and community involvement and engagement. Methods: The CHecklist for Inclusive COmmunity involvement in health research (CHICO) was co-produced by researchers and three Bristol-based community organisations: Dhek Bhal, My Friday Coffee Morning—Barton Hill, and Malcolm X Elders. After initial conversations and link building with community leaders to develop relationships, researchers attended at least three meetings with each community group to discuss preferred approaches to involvement. Each community group had a different format, and discussions were open and tailored to fit the groups preferences. The meetings were held in the community groups’ usual meeting venue. Notes from meetings were reviewed by researchers to identify key themes, which were used to inform the creation of a draft illustration which was then taken back to the community groups for refinement and used to inform the development of written guidance and the final illustration. Results: Checklist items were structured into three stages: (1) building relationships, (2) reciprocal relationships and (3) practicalities. The task of terminal area energy management (TAEM) is to plan a trajectory from the end of the reentry phase (approximately 30km) to the landing window (approximately 3km). To ensure the safety of the reusable launch vehicle (RLV), both path constraints and terminal constraints should be met. This paper proposes a novel real-time trajectory planning algorithm to deal with the TAEM task. Firstly, the longitudinal trajectory profile and the lateral trajectory profile are designed separately to satisfy the path constraints and the terminal constraints. Secondly, the trajectory parameters are modified online by newton iteration according to the terminal error, which makes the algorithm more robust. Thirdly, taking vehicle damage into consideration, the landing window is chosen by RLV's range capability and the initial parameters of the trajectory are predicted by the neural network so that the algorithm canmeet the real-time requirement. Simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) health care providers report a desire to improve long-term outcomes and quality of life for their patients. One of the items frequently cited by patients in terms of transitioning from being a patient back to pre-HCT life is return to work (RTW). However, these patients report little support from their health care providers in facilitating this process, and only 50% to 60% achieve RTW, at a median of 3 years post-HCT. Barriers are physical, psychological, and logistical, as well as poor communication between the patient and their employer. We convened a group of experts in survivorship, rehabilitation, social work, and psychology to draft an evidence-based document to assist health care providers in guiding their patients' RTW journey. Guid-ance is drawn from the existing literature for HCT and general cancer patients and is divided into pre-HCT, peri-HCT, and post-HCT categories. Collaboration among health care providers, patients, and their employers is key to this transition. Suggested referrals and evaluations also are provided. The goal is for this guidance to be continu-ally updated as we advance the field with more HCT-specific literature.(c) 2022 The American Society for Transplantation and Cellular Therapy. The low success rate of entrepreneurship is quite common for contemporary college students, and its main reason can be attributed to their lack of social experience and entrepreneurial guidance, thus, it's of certain prac-tical significance to study the social experience guidance for college students' entrepreneurship and this paper aims to explore this problem based on social network. At first, this paper introduced the formation mechanism of the social experience guidance for college students' entrepreneurship, proposed a novel Social Network Representation Learning (SNRL) method for college students' entrepreneurship, which could attain more information of social experience guid-ance from networks with isomorphic substructures. Then, in the social network of college students' entrepreneurship, this paper discussed the extraction method of structural subgraph of neighborhood space of college students and other entre-preneurial subject nodes, and proposed a method for building sub-networks sim-ilar to the scale and development state in the social network of college students' entrepreneurship, and realized the information sharing of social and entrepre-neurial experiences among sub-networks. At last, this paper constructed a Social and Entrepreneurial Experience guidance (SEEG) model, and verified its effec-tiveness in experiments.

Ultrasound guidance for Full Endoscopic Spinal Surgery: A Technical Note

BACKGROUND: The use of intraoperative ultrasound (IOU) has proven to be useful in spinal surgery. In this study, we present the techniques of applying IOU in cervical, thoracic, and lumbar full-endoscopic spine surgery (FESS). METHODS: For applying IOU in cervical FESS, first, we localize the surgical level by identifying the unique shape of C6 and C7 under ultrasound and then identify the cervical level subsequently. For the anterior approach, the endoscope passes through the cervical fascia between the carotid sheath and trachea/esophagus, which can be identified under ultrasound, and for the posterior approach, the endoscope docks on the facet joint under ultrasound. For applying IOU in thoracic FESS, we localize the surgical level by counting the ribs. The endoscope is advanced to the neural foramen under ultrasound without entering the pleural cavity. For applying IOU in lumbar FESS, we identify the surgical level by counting the interlaminar window from the sacrum. The endoscopic sheath is advanced to the neural foramen under ultrasound without entering the peritoneal cavity. RESULTS: The use of IOU in FESS has the potential to reduce radiation exposure, reach a higher successful puncture rate, and decrease the operation time. Furthermore, IOU prevents radiolucent organs from damage during FESS. CONCLUSIONS: We present the techniques of applying IOU in cervical, thoracic, and lumbar endoscopic spine surgery and hope that this will be helpful for physicians to master the IOU techniques.

Regarding the flight trajectory of a suborbital spaceplane, considering the situations such as abort flight, it is difficult to set the reference trajectory in advance. Therefore, a guidance algorithm is required for the suborbital spaceplane to generate the optimal trajectory flexibly during a return flight. Evolutionary algorithms that can search for solutions globally are effective methods for this purpose. Based on this idea, a return trajectory generation method using a dynamic distributed genetic algorithm (DynDGA) has been proposed. In this study, three improvements to the previously proposed DynDGA-based method are presented. First, the continuity of the angle-of-attack and bank-angle commands before and after the optimal trajectory update was ensured. Second, the angle-of-attack command satisfied the trim condition. Third, fitness was calculated based on hierarchical fuzzy logic. The effectiveness of the improved method was confirmed by trajectory generation simulation of a return flight of a suborbital spaceplane.

Purpose To describe a guidance on the management of post-acute COVID 19 patients in geriatric rehabilitation. Methods The guidance is based on guidelines for post-acute COVID-19 geriatric rehabilitation developed in the Netherlands, updated with recent insights from literature, related guidance from other countries and disciplines, and combined with experiences from experts in countries participating in the Geriatric Rehabilitation Special Interest Group of the European Geriatric Medicine Society. Results This guidance for post-acute COVID-19 rehabilitation is divided into a section addressing general recommendations for geriatric rehabilitation and a section addressing specific processes and procedures. The Sect. "General recommendations for geriatric rehabilitation" addresses: (1) general requirements for post-acute COVID-19 rehabilitation and (2) critical aspects for quality assurance during COVID-19 pandemic. The Sect. "Specific processes and procedures", addresses the following topics: (1) patient selection;(2) admission;(3) treatment;(4) discharge;and (5) follow-up and monitoring. Conclusion Providing tailored geriatric rehabilitation treatment to post-acute COVID-19 patients is a challenge for which the guidance is designed to provide support. There is a strong need for additional evidence on COVID-19 geriatric rehabilitation including developing an understanding of risk profiles of older patients living with frailty to develop individualised treatment regimes. The present guidance will be regularly updated based on additional evidence from practice and research.
