Static anti-windup compensator design for autonomous guidance and control of quadrotors

In this paper, the problem of anti-windup compensator (AWC) design for implementation in the autonomous guidance and control of quadrotors is addressed. The flight environment contains obstacles with no prior knowledge of their locations. Instead, obstacles location are determined in real time, and the locations are used by a guidance algorithm for avoidance. Wind disturbances are also considered since their presence can potentially result in saturation of the propellers. When this occurs, the flight can become unstable, leading to a crash. Designing an AWC to mitigate the effects of saturation in the control system of a quadrotor can be a challenging task due to the heavy couplings and complex nonlinear dynamics. For this reason, we propose a new structure to design a static AWC-based control system to solve this problem. The effectiveness of the proposed theoretical results are verified by comparing results from simulation experiments.

Modeling competing guidance on evacuation choices under time pressure using virtual reality and machine learning

Efficient emergency guidance in buildings is essential for the safe evacuation of occupants. However, occupants may be exposed to contradictory information from signage and other sources of information. This study presents a set of forced-choice VR experiments and a machine learning approach to investigate the effect of competing or conflicting guidance on exit choice in simulated scenarios. In the VR study, participants chose between two potential exits under time pressure in each trial. Attracting cues ("EXIT" signs, audio instructions) and repelling cues ("DO NOT ENTER" signs, traffic cones) were placed in front of the two exits, either individually or in combination. In total, 2,125 datapoints were recorded from 20 participants. To model exit choice, machine learning (random forest, RF) models were applied to predict and interpret the guidance on evacuation choices. The tuned-hyperparameters RF model proposed in this study showed above 75% accuracy to predict evacuation choices facing conflict cues and was superior to default RF and logistic regression models. Interestingly, repelling cues such as "DO NOT ENTER" signs had a stronger impact on exit choice than attracting cues like "EXIT" signs when people have to make choices. Overall, the study offers valuable data and insights into exit choices, revealing that negative cues are more influential than positive ones in emergencies. These findings can significantly inform the design and optimization of egress guidance systems. This bias towards negative information under pressure suggests that evacuation systems should prioritize clear and prominent negative cues to guide occupants effectively.

On January 18, 2024, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued their most recent guidelines for over-the-counter drugs for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Specifically, the organization stated that "Most people with COVID-19 have mild illness and can recover at home. You can treat symptoms with over-the-counter medicines, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil), to help you feel better." In this review we consider the contributions of different types of evidence and conclude that healthcare providers should make individual clinical judgments for each of their patients in the selection of over-thecounter drugs to treat symptoms of COVID-19. This judgment should be based on the entire benefit to risk profile of the patient. It is our belief that the individual healthcare provider knows far more about each of his or her patients than anyone, including expert members of guideline committees. Their astute and judicious individual clinical decision-making for each individual patient based on all these considerations has the potential to do far more good than harm. Assessment of recent UK fire safety guidance for covered car parks and electric vehicles

guidance issued by organisations such as fire and rescue services, insurers and governmental bodies across the UK for the fire safety design of covered car parks is changing in response to the projected rapid growth in electric vehicle (EV) use. This new guidance is impacting the provision of parking bays, particularly in residential and mixed-use buildings. This paper considers whether EVs in covered car parks pose a greater fire risk than internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs) using recent data on the ignition frequency and the burning characteristics of EVs. The recommended mitigating fire safety measures within the new guidance are assessed with a focus on detection, smoke ventilation, sprinkler systems and structural performance as these have the potential to have the greatest impact on a building fire safety design. The paper indicates that the recommendations may not align with available evidence which challenges a balanced approach to fire safety requirements to prevent over-specification that could affect the feasibility of building *** Application This paper summarises recent fire safety guidance in the UK on the use of electric vehicles (EVs) in covered car parks. Factors that contribute to the risk posed by EVs are investigated and practical design values for heat release and fire growth are suggested. Key recommended fire safety measures proposed in the guidance have been assessed against existing evidence. The findings are useful to stakeholders involved in the design of covered car parks to allow a balanced approach to their fire safety requirements.

From general AI to custom AI: the effects of generative conversational AI's cognitive and emotional conversational skills on user's guidance

PurposeGenerative conversational artificial intelligence (AI) demonstrates powerful conversational skills for general tasks but requires customization for specific tasks. The quality of a custom generative conversational AI highly depends on users' guidance, which has not been studied by previous research. This study uses social exchange theory to examine how generative conversational AI's cognitive and emotional conversational skills affect users' guidance through different types of user engagement, and how these effects are moderated by users' relationship norm ***/methodology/approachBased on data collected from 589 actual users using a two-wave survey, this study employed partial least squares structural equation modeling to analyze the proposed hypotheses. Additional analyses were performed to test the robustness of our research model and *** results reveal that cognitive conversational skills (i.e. tailored and creative responses) positively affected cognitive and emotional engagement. However, understanding emotion influenced cognitive engagement but not emotional engagement, and empathic concern influenced emotional engagement but not cognitive engagement. In addition, cognitive and emotional engagement positively affected users' guidance. Further, relationship norm orientation moderated some of these effects such that the impact of user engagement on user guidance was stronger for communal-oriented users than for exchange-oriented ***/valueFirst, drawing on social exchange theory, this study empirically examined the drivers of users' guidance in the context of generative conversational AI, which may enrich the user guidance literature. Second, this study revealed the moderating role of relationship norm orientation in influencing the effect of user engagement on users' guidance. The Mechanism for Force Measurement and guidance Based on Reciprocal Measurement in Joule Balance

The Joule balance is a kilogram realization method based on Planck's constant. In Joule balance, alignment error is the main uncertainty component. In order to solve the problem, the dual-mode reciprocal measurement method of Joule balance is analyzed in this article. We establish the reciprocal relationship between the parasitic generalized force in the weighing phase and the parasitic displacement in flux difference measurement mode. In addition, it is concluded that the integrated mechanism with force measurement and guidance is the base of reciprocal measurement. Then, an integrated mechanism of force measurement and guidance is designed with three parallelogram flexible hinges. The small axial stiffness and large off-axial stiffness are achieved to ensure force measurement and guidance. Theoretical and finite element analysis are applied to the mechanism. Experiment setups are built for force-measurement sensitivity and straightness. The force-measurement sensitivity of the mechanism is 7.2 mN/mm;within the guiding displacement of 17.2 mm, the straightness is 4.32 mu m. The integrated mechanism can be used for force measurement and guidance simultaneously. In conclusion, the dual-mode reciprocal measurement can be achieved in Joule balance.

guidance and Control design for CubeSat small body landing using discrete firings of sliding mode control

Small body exploration has seen a renewed interest in recent years. Landing a spacecraft on the body's surface enhances the mission's scientific return, yet it is a high-risk operation. CubeSats offer a cheaper alternative to bigger spacecraft, and when used in tandem with a mothercraft, they may perform risky operations without exposing the mission to a complete loss. Nonetheless, their small size as well as their limited operational and computational capabilities pose hard limitations to their efficient exploitation. Historically, powered and controlled landing has often been key to soft landing success. In an asteroid complex dynamical environment, manoeuvre execution benefits from a dedicated guidance and Control (G & C) scheme that is robust to dynamical uncertainty, autonomous and reliable. To robustly and reliably soft-land a CubeSat on a small body, we propose a novel guidance & Control strategy. It alternates closedloop control segments using the existing Multiple Surface Sliding guidance algorithm with intervals of ballistic trajectory. We show that very good landing performance in terms of landing ellipse, collision velocity and fuel consumption can be achieved. The method has been tested for Hera's Milani CubeSat landing attempt on Dimorphos, the moon of (65803) Didymos binary asteroid, using Monte Carlo analysis. A Heuristic Approach for Dual Expert/End-User Evaluation of guidance in Visual Analytics

guidance can support users during the exploration and analysis of complex data. Previous research focused on characterizing the theoretical aspects of guidance in visual analytics and implementing guidance in different scenarios. However, the evaluation of guidance-enhanced visual analytics solutions remains an open research question. We tackle this question by introducing and validating a practical evaluation methodology for guidance in visual analytics. We identify eight quality criteria to be fulfilled and collect expert feedback on their validity. To facilitate actual evaluation studies, we derive two sets of heuristics. The first set targets heuristic evaluations conducted by expert evaluators. The second set facilitates end-user studies where participants actually use a guidance-enhanced system. By following such a dual approach, the different quality criteria of guidance can be examined from two different perspectives, enhancing the overall value of evaluation studies. To test the practical utility of our methodology, we employ it in two studies to gain insight into the quality of two guidance-enhanced visual analytics solutions, one being a work-in-progress research prototype, and the other being a publicly available visualization recommender system. Based on these two evaluations, we derive good practices for conducting evaluations of guidance in visual analytics and identify pitfalls to be avoided during such studies.

In recent years, stakeholders expect the delivery of new features almost every day to give fast feedback about changes or issues in software projects. To achieve this, they have opted to try new practices such as those from DevOps to improve their processes. Organizations such as IBM, Facebook, Amazon, and so on are implementing a DevOps culture. However, for small organizations, which are a large majority in the software development market, it is complicated to adopt DevOps because there is no guide to follow. Organizations have experienced issues trying to implement a DevOps approach, mainly for reasons such as a lack of process, guidance, or uncoordinated activities among organizations. Moreover, some organizations have a wrong understanding of DevOps: as just a set of automation tools to achieve a continuous release. This paper presents a guide to implement or reinforce a DevOps approach. Besides, the results of a case study of implementing the guide in a small organization are included. These results have shown that the guide helped the team: to identify its gaps toward the implementation of a DevOps approach;to have a better understanding of DevOps;and to facilitate the DevOps implementation providing a set of tasks, roles, and metrics.

Purpose Consensus on the choice of the most accurate imaging strategy in diabetic foot infective and non-infective complications is still lacking. This document provides evidence-based recommendations, aiming at defining which imaging modality should be preferred in different clinical *** This working group includes 8 nuclear medicine physicians appointed by the European Association of Nuclear Medicine (EANM), 3 radiologists and 3 clinicians (one diabetologist, one podiatrist and one infectious diseases specialist) selected for their expertise in diabetic foot. The latter members formulated some clinical questions that are not completely covered by current guidelines. These questions were converted into statements and addressed through a systematic analysis of available literature by using the PICO (Population/Problem-Intervention/Indicator-Comparator-Outcome) strategy. Each consensus statement was scored for level of evidence and for recommendation grade, according to the Oxford Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine (OCEBM) *** Nine clinical questions were formulated by clinicians and used to provide 7 evidence-based recommendations: (1) A patient with a positive probe-to-bone test, positive plain X-rays and elevated ESR should be treated for presumptive osteomyelitis (OM). (2) Advanced imaging with MRI and WBC scintigraphy, or [18F]FDG PET/CT, should be considered when it is needed to better evaluate the location, extent or severity of the infection, in order to plan more tailored treatment. (3) In a patient with suspected OM, positive PTB test but negative plain X-rays, advanced imaging with MRI or WBC scintigraphy + SPECT/CT, or with [18F]FDG PET/CT, is needed to accurately assess the extent of the infection. (4) There are no evidence-based data to definitively prefer one imaging modality over the others for detecting OM or STI in fore- mid- and hind-foot.
