Robots are widely used to promote the neuromotor recovery of stroke survivors, but it is unclear whether robots might be useful to facilitate the acquisition of novel motor skills. In principle, robots could be used to guide a trainee to experiment the correct movements and/or by preventing him/her from performing incorrect ones (the 'guidance' hypothesis). Here we investigate whether and on what circumstances physical interaction with a robot may facilitate the acquisition of a novel motor skill. We focused on a simulated putting task, consisting of gently hitting an object (e.g. a 'ball') by means of a tool (the 'pad', e.g. the golf putter) to move it to a desired final position. A virtual environment, created through a planar robot manipulandum and a computer screen, was used to simulate the physics involved in the putting task. Putting is a redundant task, as the same final position of the ball can be obtained by different combinations of pad velocity, acceleration and point of impact. Two groups of subjects were analyzed: in an 'assisted' group, the robot guided subjects toward the correct movement, whereas a control group performed the task without assistance. In both groups we looked at the subjects' performance and its evolution with exercise at several levels of description, namely: (i) final error (distance between final ball position and center of the target area);(ii) ball velocity just after impact;and (iii) hand position and velocity just before impact. In all cases, we looked at both mean value and variability (variance). We found that guidance is helpful in decreasing longitudinal error (a matter of speed accuracy), but not directional error (a matter of position accuracy). These results are consistent with the notion that guidance can help with the dynamic, but not the geometric components of a task.

The 5-year multi-national project EURANOS (European Approach to Nuclear and Radiological Emergency Management and Rehabilitation Strategies), funded by the European Commission and 23 European Member States, started in April 2004. Integrating 17 national emergency management organisations with 33 research institutes, it brings together best practices, knowledge and technology to enhance the preparedness for Europe's response to any radiation emergency and long term contamination. Key objectives of the project are to collate information on the likely effectiveness and consequences of a wide range of countermeasures, to provide guidance to emergency management organisations and decision makers on the establishment of an appropriate response strategy and to further enhance advanced decision support systems (DSS), in particular, RODOS (Real-time On-line Decisions Support) decision support system), through feedback from their operational use. Further, the project aims to create regional initiatives leading to information exchange based on state-of-the-art information technologies, to develop guidance which assists Member States in developing a framework for the sustainable rehabilitation of living conditions in contaminated areas and to maintain and enhance knowledge and competence through emergency exercises, training and education, thus fostering best practice in emergency response. The project is divided into three major research activities and a set of demonstration projects which are split in two phases lasting over two and three years, respectively. The research activities address specific issues previously identified by the users or by previous research in the area. They are focused on emergency actions and countermeasures, the enhancement of decision support systems for operational application and the development of strategies for the sustainable rehabilitation of contaminated territories. The demonstration activities exercise the developed methods and tools in th

This issue of the Journal of Pharmaceutical Science is specially dedicated to honor Emeritus Professor Akira Tsuji following his retirement from Kanazawa University, to celebrate his enormous contributions to research and education in the field of pharmaceutical science, and it is a great privilege to have this opportunity to write a commentary on his achievements and successes. Dr. Tsuji served for 42 years at Kanazawa University and retired on March 31, 2010. During his 28 years as a full professor, Akira Tsuji was a thoughtful mentor to his many students, who altogether received 92 Bachelor\'s, 85 Master\'s, and 28 PhD degrees under his guidance. He greatly inspired both his students and his collaborators, many of whom went on to make important contributions in many fields, including academia, industry, government, hospital medicine, and pharmacy.

A novel MR-compatible manually-actuated robotic manipulation device has been developed. It is a general-purpose system that provides access to the patient inside a closed-cylindrical MRI scanner. It allows the performance of various minimally-invasive interventions, such as biopsies and local drug deliveries, using real-time images for guidance and monitoring. The design of the system is described and the prototype constructed is presented together with initial MRI phantom testing on needle targeting. The characteristics and potential of manual actuation in MR-compatible robotic systems are examined.

Objective: The objective of the study was to assess the success rate of emergency department (ED) technicians in placing ultrasound (US)-guided peripheral intravenous (IV) catheters. Methods: In this prospective, observational trial, 19 ED technicians were taught to use US guidance to obtain IV access. Training sessions consisted of didactic instruction and hands-on practice. The ED technicians were then prospectively followed. The US guidance for IV access was limited to patients with difficult access. The primary outcome was successful peripheral IV placement. Results: A total of 219 attempts were recorded, with a success rate of 78.5% (172/219). There was a significant correlation between operator experience and success rate. Complications were reported in 4.1% of patients and included 5 arterial punctures and 1 case of a transient paresthesia. Conclusions: Emergency department technicians can be taught to successfully place US-guided IVs in patients with difficult venous access. Teaching this skill to ED technicians increases the pool of providers available in the ED to obtain access in this patient population. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The paper presents research findings on students' experiences of the provision both of guidance and feedback, and with respect to examinations as well as coursework assignments. A first-and a final-year bioscience course unit were surveyed in each of three contrasting university departments. The resulting dataset comprised 782 completed student questionnaires and 23 group interviews with a total of 69 students. Although the questionnaire data provided a robust overall picture of the students' perceptions of guidance and feedback across the six units, the interview data made possible a much finer-grained analysis of their experiences. At the core of this analysis was a guidance and feedback loop, within which six interrelated steps have been picked out, beginning with the students' prior experiences of cognate assessments and closing with the potential of what has been learned from a given task to feed forward into subsequent work. By pinpointing potential troublespots, the framework can serve as a valuable diagnostic as well as analytical tool.

The Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma (ARIA) guidelines are widely used for guidance regarding the treatment of allergic rhinitis (AR), and we commend the recent update undertaken by the review group.1 However, it is important to recognize the differences between ARIA and the US Rhinitis Practice Parameters and underscore that the US approach is *** is a global document that recommends some treatments not approved in the United States (eg, sublingual immunother-apy). Also, its guidance on the use of nasal antihistamines (NAHs) and oral antihistamines (OAHs) varies from current US practice.1\'2 AR is one of the most common conditions seen by US health professionals, and management strategies should reflect carefully reviewed and graded evidence.

Some nonverbal information such as prosody are reported to be able to play a role of penalty signal in human-human and human-agent communication. In order to investigate whether other nonverbal information such as gesture can play similar role in human-robot interactive task, a pilot experiment using a directional guidance task was conducted. The results suggested that a part of "stop" instructions might play a role of a penalty signal, and changes of usage frequency of these "stop" instructions could possibly infer the learning stage of human instructors' adaptation to robots.

In this paper, we use CA model to study the traffic flow on a ring road with one traffic light. A velocity guidance strategy is presented: when crossing traffic light, a message will give the driver a desired velocity in order that he can avoid sharply brakes when signal light turns red. The numerical results show that the velocity guidance strategy can efficiently reduce the ratio of the stopped vehicles and get relatively high and stable flow.
