The influence of a leader in the creation of the clinical milieu significantly impacts on how and what students learn. Leadership and guidance by the Nurse Unit Manager or equivalent is instrumental in determining the vision and inspiring the integration of students and student learning in the clinical context (Saarikoski & Leino-Kilpi 2002). Strong partnership between Nurse Unit Managers, clinical education coordinators, facilitators and clinical staff improves understanding around student needs (Andrews et al. 2006). All staff have a role in facilitating student learning (McNamara 2007). When staff are adequately prepared and guided about the learning needs of students, they can effectively respond to assist student learning.

In recent years, antimicrobial resistance in bacteria of animal origin, including food-producing animals, pet and companion animals, fish and other aquatic animals as well as wild animals, has gained particular attention. Consequently, an increasing number of studies that include antimicrobial susceptibility testing have been published. However, an analysis of recently published articles revealed a number of frequently occurring shortcomings, which may have an impact either directly on the quality of the results obtained or on the conclusions drawn. This editorial is intended to highlight the major pitfalls and provide guidance for authors, and reviewers on the correct performance of antimicrobial susceptibility testing as well as the presentation of the obtained results and the proper comparison of data from different studies.

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a big problem that has a large iatrogenic and preventable component: it is estimated that 25,000 people in the UK die from preventable hospital-acquired VTE every year (1). This includes patients admitted to hospital for medical care of all types and for surgery and for example, is many times more than deaths from methicilin resistant staphylococcus aureus infection. The inconsistent use of prophylactic measures for VTE in hospital patients has also been widely reported (2). However, there is a paucity of data specifically related to patients with psychiatric disorders. The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) have recently issued evidence-based guidance on VTE prevention for all adult hospital in-patients in England and Wales (3). This guidance applies equally to psychiatric units and day surgery units, although it does not specifically mention them as a separate group. At the heart of the new guidance is the requirement to assess all patients on admission and again within 24 h (4).

MY 16-YEAR-OLD son is a typical teenager; one that that a researcher might regard as a product of "Generation M2," the multimedia generation (Rideout, Foehr, & Roberts, 2010). My son is technologically connected or "wired" (cell phone, computer, and video game, with talking head set). He explains that, "This is the way that kids hang out these days. This is what we do." I am a big proponent of technology (or I would not be writing this column); however, I do believe that parents have a responsibility to provide children with guidance for the safe use of technology. Raising three teenagers, I have been witness to lewd text messages, cyber bullying, and violent video game playing. The characteristics of surface maneuver targets are analyzed and a 3-D relative motion model for missiles and targets is established. A variable structure guidance law is designed considering the characteristics of targets. In the guidance law, the distance between missiles and targets as well as the missile-target relative velocity are all substituted by estimation values. The estimation errors, the target''s velocity, and the maneuver acceleration are all treated as bounded disturbance. The guidance law proposed can be implemented conveniently in engineering with little target information. The performance of the guidance system is analyzed theoretically and the numerical simulation result shows the effectiveness of the guidance law.

A fuzzy set-point weighting proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller is applied in the development of the flight control system for a two-dimensional differential geometric (DG) guidance and control system, whose function is to guarantee the achieved angle of attack (AOA) and track the commanded AOA efficiently. In particular, a Lyapunov stability criterion is introduced to study the relation between the stability and the output of the fuzzy inference system, and a genetic algorithm is utilised to tune the PID gains in the simulations so as to show the full potentiality of the proposed control scheme. The results demonstrate that the designed controller yields a fast-responding and stable system that is robust to parameter variations. Moreover, the DG guidance law is viable and effective in a realistic missile defence engagement.

The three-dimensional missile guidance law with saturating actuator is proposed for the pursuit of an unpredictably manoeuvring target. The proposed guidance law achieves a satisfactorily robust performance without having to solve a complicated nonlinear Hamilton-Jacobi partial differential inequality and without relying on Takagi-Sugeno linear fuzzy models. In the proposed guidance scheme, the nonlinear part of the relative motion equations between the missile and target is first cancelled. Then, a tunable state feedback guidance law is designed to eliminate the effect of external disturbance. The conditions of tunable parameters are also proved to achieve the desired goal. The proposed guidance law can achieve reduced interception time than others, yet it is considerably simpler. An example is proposed to confirm it.
