The Orbital Express Autonomous Rendezvous and Capture Sensor System (ARCSS) ALONG WITH ITS Vision-based Software for Track, Attitude and Ranging (Vis-STAR) provided relative target position and attitude measurements for guidance and relative navigation during autonomous vehicle proximity operations. The use of computer and physical models during simulation, ground testing and verification of ARCSS imaging camera and software performance prior to and during on-orbit operations,is discussed.

This study set out to explore the experiences of five Irish based students undertaking e-learning modules with third level colleges in Europe. An explorative, drill down research strategy was applied to give voice to students with a story to tell, and a willingness to tell it. The voices of five students were captured in semi-structured interviews. The students' experiences were presented in a manner which gave prominence to their voice and turn of phrase. This paper presents a summary of the researchers interpretation of the students' experiences. While the research did give evidence to the potential of e-learning environments to host rich student learning experiences, the high level themes emerging identified the need for salience of leadership and guidance, good communications and 'high levels of motivation' in order to harvest the benefits of IT mediated learning. The primary hypothesis emerging from the research is that successful IT mediated learning delivery requires robust leadership and high salience of interpersonal relationships. Synchronous and asynchronous IT tools should be used to effect active and visible leadership in a personal and social context, and which is knowledgeable and sensitive to student needs and promotes. Student motivation is a complex, multi-factored concept which requires consideration. The challenge to e-learning designers and implementers, it is to preserve the time and place independence of e-learners while using asynchronous and synchronous IT tools to encourage interaction and collaboration in a virtual place which promotes a sense of belonging.

Targeting of Pollen Tubes to Ovules Is Dependent on Nitric Oxide （NO） Signaling

The guidance signals that drive pollen tube navigation inside the pistil and micropyle targeting are still, to a great extent, unknown. Previous studies in vitro showed that nitric oxide （NO） works as a negative chemotropic cue for pollen tube growth in lily （Lilium Iongiflorum）. Furthermore, Arabidopsis thaliana Atnosl mutant plants, which show de- fective NO production, have reduced fertility. Here, we focus in the role of NO in the process of pollen-pistil communication, using Arabidopsis in-vivo and lily semi-vivo assays. Cross-pollination between wild-type and Atnosl plants shows that the mutation affects the pistil tissues in a way that is compatible with abnormal pollen tube guidance. Moreover, DAF- 2DA staining for NO in kanadi floral mutants showed the presence of NO in an asymmetric restricted area around the micropyle. The pollen-pistil interaction transcriptome indicates a time-course-specific modulation of transcripts of AtNOS1 and two Nitrate Reductases （nrl and nr2）, which collectively are thought to trigger a putative NO signaling pathway. Semivivo assays with isolated ovules and lily pollen further showed that NO is necessary for micropyle targeting to occur. This evidence is supported by CPTIO treatment with subsequent formation of balloon tips in pollen tubes facing ovules. Activation of calcium influx in pollen tubes partially rescued normal pollen tube morphology, suggesting that this pathway is also dependent on Ca^2＋ signaling. A role of NO in modulating Ca^2＋ signaling was further substantiated by direct imaging the cytosolic free Ca^2＋ concentration during NO-induced re-orientation, where two peaks of Ca^2＋ occur--one during the slowdown/stop response, the second during re-orientation and growth resumption. Taken together, these results provide evidence for the participation of NO signaling events during pollen-pistil interaction. The target of this work is the development of a motorcycle virtual rider model that plans a trajectory and follows it. The reference speed and trajectory Lire obtained by applying the optimal manoeuvre method (i.e. a nonlinear optimal control technique) to a basic model of the motorcycle. Then. the vehicle control and guidance are obtained using a PID architecture and the gains vary with speed. Separated loops for speed and lateral motion controls have been implemented, the lateral motion control is complex because of the motorcycle instability, whereas the longitudinal control is simpler. The characteristics of the PID control are illustrated and discussed in detail, sonic examples are given for a cornering manoeuvre first and then for it run in the Mugello circuit.

This paper provides advice on how to incorporate thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) coupled processes into performance and safety assessments and design studies for radioactive waste disposal in geological formations. The advice is based on work conducted for the EU research project BENCHPAR: "Benchmark Tests and guidance on Coupled Processes for Performance Assessment of Nuclear Waste Repositories". In Section 1, there is an explanation of why numerical analyses incorporating THM mechanisms are required for radioactive waste studies and background material on the subject is provided. Then, the THM processes and their interactions are explained in Section 2. Three case examples of THM numerical analysis are presented in Section 3 to illustrate the type of work that can be conducted to study the near-field, upscaling, and the far-field. The importance and priority of the THM couplings are summarized in Section 4. Recommended soft and hard auditing procedures are presented in Section 5. We place special emphasis on the fact that the most important step in numerical modelling is not executing the calculations per se, but the earlier conceptualization of the problem regarding the dominant processes, the material properties and parameters, the engineering perturbations, and their mathematical presentations. The associated modelling component of addressing the uncertainties and estimating their influence on the results is also important. Thus, the specific models and codes should be studied first to evaluate the harmony between the nature of the problem and the nature of the codes. The tactical use of particular numerical techniques will then be based on a sound strategic foundation. An associated listing of bullet point recommendations and issues for future directions for this THM subject area is given in Section 6. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The effects of functional magnetic nanotubes with incorporated nerve growth factor in neuronal differentiation of PC12 cells

In this in vitro study the efficiency of magnetic nanotubes to bind with nerve growth factor (NGF) and the ability of NGF-incorporated magnetic nanotubes to release the bound NGF are investigated using rat pheochromocytoma cells (PC12 cells). It is found that functional magnetic nanotubes with NGF incorporation enabled the differentiation of PC12 cells into neurons exhibiting growth cones and neurite outgrowth. Microscope observations show that filopodia extending from neuron growth cones were in close proximity to the NGF-incorporated magnetic nanotubes, at times appearing to extend towards or into them. These results show that magnetic nanotubes can be used as a delivery vehicle for NGF and thus may be exploited in attempts to treat neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson's disease with neurotrophins. Further neurite outgrowth can be controlled by manipulating magnetic nanotubes with external magnetic fields, thus helping in directed regeneration.

guidance force is calculated when a high-temperature superconductor moves laterally on a permanent magnetic guideway. Both the superconductor and the guideway are infinitely long. The dependence of guidance performance upon both geometrical parameters, such as the shape of the superconductor and the guideway, and intrinsic parameters, such as critical current density of the superconductor and uniform magnetization of the guideway, are studied. The results may be helpful to the design and optimization of the superconducting magnetically levitated train system.

Regulations in the United States: requirements and guidance for ultraviolet disinfection of drinking water

In July 2003, the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) published a proposed regulation, the Long Term 2 Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule (LT2ESWTR), which included requirements pertaining to ultraviolet (UV) disinfection. In addition the USEPA released the proposed UV Disinfection guidance Manual (UVDGM) that provides implementation guidelines for UV disinfection. Since July 2003, USEPA has revised several elements, which are also described. This paper summarizes proposed regulatory requirements in the United States (US) that pertain to disinfection of drinking water using UV light and the recommendations in USEPA's UVDGM. Although this paper does not provide the detailed UVDGM recommendations, it highlights important elements of the proposed regulation and guidance, including required UV doses, UV facility design and operation, and UV reactor validation. The US regulations and guidance do not directly affect the implementation of UV facilities in other countries;however, the information provided in this paper provides a different perspective for worldwide facilities and regulatory agencies to consider.
