In response to the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA's) Draft guidance for Industry: Metered Dose Inhaler (MDI) and Dry Powder Inhaler (DPI) Drug Products Chemistry, Manufacturing, and Controls (CMC) Documentation (1), a technical team initiated a scientific evaluation of the tests and methods for MDIs required by that guidance. This technical team was comprised of members of the Inhalation Technology Focus Group (ITFG) of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists and the International Pharmaceutical Aerosol Consortium on Regulation and Science (IPAC-RS). It was called the ITFG/IPAC-RS Tests and Methods Technical Team. The team believes that only those tests that have been demonstrated in development studies to provide meaningful information about quality should be included as product quality control tests. The team analyzed the tests required by the draft guidance from this perspective. This article summarizes the results of the teams investigation and provides a critical assessment of how individual tests can add value to the development and quality control of a new product. The goal of the team initiative is to maximize the value of characterization and control testing, and to minimize testing that does not provide useful information.

This article provides a brief overview of research efforts over the past 50 years directed toward the development of guidance systems for agricultural vehicles. The motivations for and potential advantages of autonomous or semi-autonomous systems are discussed. Examples are presented of the two general approaches taken;namely, guidance with respect to a directrix generated by the previous pass, or guidance with respect to a directrix generated by fixed points in the field. From this review, it is concluded that two recent technologies, specifically computer vision and the global positioning system, possess the technological features and characteristics most closely resembling those possessed by the human operator for implementation of a vehicle guidance system. guidance for the performance evaluation of three-dimensional air quality modeling systems for particulate matter and visibility is presented. Four levels are considered: operational, diagnostic, mechanistic, and probabilistic evaluations. First, a comprehensive model evaluation should be conducted in at least two distinct geographical locations and for several meteorological episodes. Next, streamlined evaluations can be conducted for other similar applications if the comprehensive evaluation is deemed satisfactory. In all cases, the operational evaluation alone is insufficient, and some diagnostic evaluation must always be carried out. Recommendations are provided for designing field measurement programs that can provide the data needed for such model performance evaluations.

This paper presents a method to improve the accuracy of an ultrasonic 3-D positioning system that uses the differences in the time of flights front a single transmitter to multiple receivers. The paper presents techniques to overcome errors in ultrasonic systems due to critical issues such as misalignment of transducers, changes in the speed of sound, arrival time of signals, etc. Further, the work presented here is not just applicable to ultrasonic systems but to all systems based on wave theory. This work will impact applications in robotics, virtual reality, precision measurement devices and probes, guidance of autonomous vehicles, and vibration analysis.

We have designed, built, and flight-tested a new star camera for daytime guiding of pointed balloon-borne experiments at altitudes around 40 km. The camera and lens are commercially available, off-the-shelf components, but require a custom-built baffle to reduce stray light, especially near the sunlit limb of the balloon. This new camera, which operates in the 600- to 1000-nm region of the spectrum, successfully provides daytime aspect information of similar to10 arcsec resolution for two distinct star fields near the galactic plane. The detected scattered-light backgrounds show good agreement with the Air Force MODTRAN models used to design the camera, but the daytime stellar magnitude limit was lower than expected due to longitudinal chromatic aberration in the lens. Replacing the commercial lens with a custom-built lens should allow the system to track stars in any arbitrary area of the sky during the daytime. This paper describes the formulation and numerical investigation of a variable load factor guidance algorithm (variable n-guidance) that allows an aircraft pilot to approximate minimum-time low-altitude quasi-level fly-to-point maneuvers of a jet fighter aircraft. The maneuvers studied consist of flight to a point at a radial distance of 50 kft from the starting point, with the final position vector oriented at 45, 90, 135, 180 deg from the initial course and with the requirement that the initial and final altitudes be the same. First, the fly-to-point maneuver is optimized from the time viewpoint with respect to three controls (angle of attack, power setting, angle of bank) via the sequential gradient-restoration algorithm. Then, from the study of the optimal trajectories, a variable n-guidance algorithm is developed, connecting the load factor to the turn-to-go. This algorithm is implemented via feedback control and tested. For comparison purposes, a constant n-guidance scheme is also tested. The main conclusion is that the variable n-guidance algorithm produces trajectories that approximate closely the optimal trajectories. On the other hand, the constant n-guidance scheme does not approximate well the optimal trajectories.

The Object Oriented Control Architecture for Autonomy (O-2 CA(2)) is a control architecture being developed at the University of Girona. Conceived as a hybrid, it is organised in three layers (deliberative, control execution and reactive) merging the deliberation mechanisms of planning with reactive behaviours in charge of controlling the robot in real-time. The aim of this paper is to provide an overall description of the whole architecture and an in-depth description of the reactive layer. The concepts of the architecture were firstly tested through the simulation of a simple mission consisting of navigating through a sequence of way-points while avoiding contact with obstacles. Apart from that, further testing has been carried out using the GARBI ROV as an experimental platform. This paper describes an. eye-control method based on electrooculography (EOG) to develop a system for assisted mobility. One of its most important features is its modularity, making it adaptable to the particular needs of each user according to the type and degree of handicap involved. An eye model based on electrooculographic signal is proposed and its validity is studied. Several human-machine interfaces (HMI) based on EOG are commented, focusing our study on guiding and controlling a wheelchair for disabled people, where the control is actually effected by eye movements with-in the socket. Different techniques and guidance strategies are then shown with comments on the advantages and disadvantages of each, one. The system consists of a standard electric wheelchair with an on-board computer, sensors and a graphic user interface run by the computer. On the other hand, this eye-control method can be applied to handle graphical interfaces, where the eye is used as a mouse computer. Results obtained show that this control technique could be useful in multiple applications, such-as mobility and communication aid for handicapped persons.
