As part of the process of automatically guiding an aircraft, we have been successful in using stable inversion to compute a desired bounded state trajectory and corresponding bounded control. In addition to this feedforward control, we must also construct a regulator to address modeling errors and disturbances. With respect to modeling errors we find that the stable inversion procedures used are so accurate that the regulator can assume a simple form, say a linear regulator about the desired trajectory. We show that under the appropriate assumptions, the bounded state trajectory and bounded control computed through stable inversion depend continuously on the parameters of the system. This is a consequence of a mathematical result that we prove about the continuous dependence of the "particular solution" of a time varying nonlinear system driven by a bounded input. This is distinct from the usual continuous dependence of the initial value problem for systems. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

This paper is intended to investigate the electromagnetic flux: distribution and side-force characteristics of a transverse flux linear switched-reluctance machine (TFLSRM) by three-dimensional finite element method. With the flux path perpendicular to its moving direction, results showed that the TFLSRM is quite suitable for high speed linear motion applications, due to the generated electromagnetic side-force which enhance the overall system guidance. From comparison analysis, conceptual design suggestions on the machine pole shapes will also be supplied.

The East Sussex Public Health Commissioners had enquired whether referral guidelines were needed to ensure that the children with the greatest concerns achieved support from the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS). Community child health doctors and nurses recorded all contacts with children with emotional and behavioural difficulties (EBD) over a one month period. Data on presenting difficulties and on intervention pathways were recorded. The same children were reviewed five months later and the outcome was measured by clinical assessment and by support offered. The work showed that child health staff were managing cases both through single advisory sessions and through planned on-going support. Additionally, the use of the three tier pathways recommended by the Department of Health was demonstrated. Analysis of recorded data was used to describe referral pathways and to give guidance on the characteristics of children who needed referral to CAMHS.

We demonstrate a new approach to the analysis of extensive multienergy data. For the case of d+4He, we produce a phase shift analysis covering the energy range 3–11 MeV. The key idea is the use of a new technique for data-to-potential inversion which yields potentials that reproduce the data simultaneously over a range of energies. It thus effectively regularizes the extraction of phase shifts from diverse, incomplete, and possibly somewhat contradictory data sets. In doing so, it will provide guidance to experimentalists as to what further measurements should be made. This study is limited to vector spin observables and spin-orbit interactions. We discuss alternative ways in which the theory can be implemented and which provide insight into the ambiguity problems. We compare the extrapolation of these solutions to other energies. Majorana terms are presented for each potential component.

This research study was designed to develop model extended-release (ER) matrix tablet formulations for metoprolol tartrate (100 mg) sufficiently sensitive to manufacturing variables and to serve as the scientific basis for regulatory policy development on scale-up and post approval changes for modified-release dosage forms (SUPAC-MR), Several grades and levels of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (Methocel K4M, K15M, K100M and K100LV), fillers and binders were studied. Three granulation processes were evaluated;direct compression, fluid-bed or high-shear granulation. Lubrication was performed in a V-blender and tablets were compressed on an instrumented rotary tablet press. Direct compression formulations exhibited poor flow, picking and sticking problems during tableting. High-shear granulation resulted in the formation of hard granules that were difficult to mill but yielded good tablets. Fluid-bed granulations were made using various binders and appeared to be satisfactory in terms of flow and tableting performance, In vitro drug release testing was performed in pH 6.8 phosphate buffer using USP apparatus 2 (paddle) at 50 rpm. At a fixed polymer level, drug release from the higher viscosity grades (K100M) was slower as compared to the lower viscosity grades (K100LV). In addition, release from K100LV was found to be more sensitive to polymer level changes. Increase in polymer level from 10 to 40% and/or filler change from lactose to dicalcium phosphate resulted in about 25-30% decrease in the amount of metoprolol release after 12 h. The results of this study led to the choice of Methocel K100LV as the hydrophilic matrix polymer and fluid-bed granulation as the process of choice for further evaluation of critical and non-critical formulation and processing variables. There has been a long tradition of health & safety legislation in Great Britain, going back to the 19th century. The structure of this legislation was prescriptive in nature, and targeted at particular industrial activities. A modem regulatory system was introduced in 1974 by the Health & Safety at Work etc. Act (HSWA). These have been further reinforced by the introduction of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1992 (MHSWR). Since the HSWA was passed, there has been a progressive reform of the law, seeking to replace industry-specific legislation with a modem approach in which regulations, whenever possible, express goals and general principles and detailed requirements are placed in codes and guidance. In this way, flexibility is allowed for technological development, within a framework of mandatory regulations. The paper gives details of the regulations applicable to industrial irradiators in Great Britain. The approach to inspection of irradiation facilities by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE), the relevant enforcement authority under the HSWA, is described. The management structure required by the operator is outlined. Industry specific guidance and liaison with plant operators is discussed.

This study shows the results obtained after developing and applying a vocational evaluation and guidance program to a sample of persons with physical and sensory disabilities from a center of vocational rehabilitation. The participants were 84 students: 56 in the experimental group and 28 in the control group. The program, lasting 27 h, included information to enhance self-awareness and knowledge of the labor world, and training in employment-seeking strategies. Pre- and post-test measurements were taken by means of three employability maturity evaluation instruments and a self-image evaluation instrument. Results show significant improvements in professional and personal identity (i.e. abilities, interest and need awareness), together with employment seeking skills. Finally, conclusions and suggestions for further research are presented.
