This paper describes an optimization framework to control a distributed parameter system (DPS) using a team of mobile actuators. The optimization simultaneously seeks efficient guidance of the mobile actuators and effective control of the DPS such that an integrated cost function associated with both the mobile actuators and the DPS is minimized. Since the optimization does not have a constraint restricting the actuators to the domain of the DPS, the actuators may actuate outside the domain with no contribution towards regulating the DPS. We show that, under certain conditions, any guidance that steers the mobile actuators out of the spatial domain is nonoptimal. This result implies that optimal guidance is guaranteed to restrict the actuators to the domain even without explicit constraints. A gradient-descent method solves the integrated optimization problem numerically using its finite-dimensional approximation. We also synthesize the optimal feedback control of the DPS given jointly optimal guidance of the mobile actuators. A numerical example illustrates the optimization framework and the solution method.

The European Food Safety Authority has produced this guidance on human and animal health aspects (Part 1) of the risk assessment of nanoscience and nanotechnology applications in the food and feed chain. It covers the application areas within EFSA's remit, e.g. novel foods, food contact materials, food/feed additives and pesticides. The guidance takes account of the new developments that have taken place since publication of the previous guidance in 2011. Potential future developments are suggested in the scientific literature for nanoencapsulated delivery systems and nanocomposites in applications such as novel foods, food/feed additives, biocides, pesticides and food contact materials. Therefore, the guidance has taken account of relevant new scientific studies that provide more insights to physicochemical properties, exposure assessment and hazard characterisation of nanomaterials. It specifically elaborates on physicochemical characterisation of nanomaterials in terms of how to establish whether a material is a nanomaterial, the key parameters that should be measured, the methods and techniques that can be used for characterisation of nanomaterials and their determination in complex matrices. It also details the aspects relating to exposure assessment and hazard identification and characterisation. In particular, nanospecific considerations relating to in vivo/in vitro toxicological studies are discussed and a tiered framework for toxicological testing is outlined. It describes in vitro degradation, toxicokinetics, genotoxicity as well as general issues relating to testing of nanomaterials. Depending on the initial tier results, studies may be needed to investigate reproductive and developmental toxicity, immunotoxicity, allergenicity, neurotoxicity, effects on gut microbiome and endocrine activity. Ophthalmic surgery involves manipulation of layered tissue structures on milli- to micrometer scales. Traditional surgical microscopes provide a two-dimensional view of the surgical field with limited depth perception which precludes accurate depth-resolved visualization of surgically-induced tissue morphology. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) enables non-contact exogenous contrast-free imaging of subsurface tissue microstructures, and is currently the gold standard for ophthalmic clinical diagnostics. Over the last decade, translation of OCT technologies to applications in surgical planning and guidance in ophthalmology has been an active area of research and commercialization. Clinical studies confirmed benefits of intraoperative OCT including verification that surgical goals have been achieved; improved axial resolution, contrast, and visualization of subsurface features-of-interested as compared to surgical stereomicroscopy; and image-guided surgical maneuvers, especially during minimally invasive and microsurgical procedures. However, several barriers still exist that limit large-scale adoption of intraoperative OCT. These include complex alignment of the OCT field-of-view (FOV) with that of the surgical microscope; shadowing artefacts that limit or completely preclude tissue visualization below the surgical instrument shaft; the fixed OCT FOV which impedes continuous visualization of instrument-tissue interactions; and the inherent trade-offs between FOV, acquisition speed, and sampling density that limit real-time imaging of surgical dynamics. This dissertation describes systems, methods, and enabling technologies to address the aforementioned limitations through the development of a novel microscope-intraoperative OCT platform, with integrated and automated real-time tracking of surgical instruments for continuous visualization of instrument-tissue interactions. To hit stationary ground targets in specified direction, a nonlinear impact angle control guidance law based on Lyapunov stability theory is proposed. The proposed law ensures the convergence of the heading angle and the miss distance to guarantee a successful engagement. The impact angle can be adjusted by varying a single parameter. And the maximum value of acceleration has been analyzed to get the proper range for control parameter. Considering the achievable impact angle set is limited, an additional phase is added to form a two-phase control *** first phase is to establish a proper initial condition for the second phase, and the second phase is to hit the target with a certain impact angle. An analysis of the proper selection of control parameters to expand the achievable impact angle set is presented. The performance of the proposed guidance law is illustrated with simulations.
