A model is presented which describes the process decision-makers follow when faced with problems containing ethical dimensions. The model, based upon the empirical literature, is designed to provide guidance to researchers studying ethical behavior in business. The model portrays the decision-maker with a set of personal values which are mediated by elements of the organization's culture. The combination of personal values and organizational influences yields decisions which may be significantly different from those made based upon personal values alone. Inclusion of the personal values of the decision-maker as the dominant individual input and an explicit discussion of the ethical decision process make this model more comprehensive than other recent ethics models.

The static magnetic field of a magnetic resonance (MR) imaging system was used as a component of an electromagnetic transducer for generating acoustic pressure waves. To permit limited focusing, the transducer was constructed from a conductive thin plate shaped like a section of a sphere. The plate was placed within the static field of the MR unit (B0 = 1.5 T). and current pulses with a rise time of 73 nsec and amplitude of 1.0 kA were applied to it. Hydrophonic recording demonstrated a shock wave with a peak pressure of 4.8 MPa at the approximated focal point. MR guidance of lithotripsy would be particularly useful to limit undesirable soft-tissue damage. It is also suggested that the integration of an acoustic pressure wave generator with MR imaging and control provides a novel technology for the treatment of solid soft-tissue tumors.

Current trends toward increased pace, more complex substance and lower tolerance of error have caused the financial marketplace to rely more heavily on the integrity of financial data and, therefore, of those who prepare the financial statements. At the same time, these trends place higher challenges before professional accountants and it is essential that they have excellent ethical guidance to live up to modern expectations. However, in view of the current codes of conduct, an accountant may not have a clear understanding of what priority of interests to satisfy, who can be consulted for advice, to whom to report misdeeds, what protection is offered a ‘right-doer’ and what sanction will be forthcoming for ‘doing wrong’. Possible solutions are offered to these problems in ways that ought to strengthen the accounting profession and prevent unscrupulous companies from taking advantage of both members of the profession and the unsuspecting public. To provide the appropriate quality of service to society in the future, the Canadian accounting profession should offer its members the improved guidance and enhanced mechanisms for confidential consultation, assistance and protection outlined herein.

The National Space Development Agency of Japan (NASDA) has been studying an unmanned winged space vehicle. This is called HOPE, the Η-II Orbiting Plane. The development of its guidance, navigation and control system requires much more versatile technology than those of the rocket and the satellite. Because of the long operation time and high accuracy requirement, the aided navigation is required for HOPE. The tentative navigation reference configuration for each flight phase is obtained based on the navigation analysis. Aerodynamic heating in the entry phase has the great influence on the HOPE design. The preliminary entry guidance analysis is carried out and the design constraints for HOPE are clarified. This paper presents the outline of the above discussions.

Two generic classes of proportional navigation (PN) laws are compared in detail. One class consists of pursuer-velocity-referenced systems, which include pure proportional navigation (PPN) and its variants; the second category consists of line-of-sight- (LOS-) referenced systems such as true proportional navigation (TPN), generalized true proportional navigation (GTPN), and generalized guidance laws. The existing closed-form solutions are discussed in detail, and the classical linear and quasilinear analytical solutions are summarized. A critical comparison is then made with regard to the definition, implementation, and analytical aspects of the guidance laws, including the method, the nature of solution, and an appraisal of the behavior of the pursuer motion resulting from the laws. It is established that, in spite of some restricted advantages in the solvability of the equations of motion, the LOS-referenced PN schemes suffer from serious limitations in terms of implementation and trajectory behavior. Among the major drawbacks are forward velocity variation requirement, relatively large control effort requirement, restrictions on initial engagement conditions to ensure intercept, lack of robustness, and possibility of unbounded acceleration. It is concluded that PPN is a better guidance law in a practical sense than TPN and its generalizations.
