Effects of ambient PM2.5 on non-accidental death: a time-series study in Shenzhen, China during 2014-2019

This study aims to investigate the impact of PM2.5 on non-accidental death of residents. The single-pollutant model revealed that the influence of PM2.5 on non-accidental death was significant at lag0 and lag4-6, and was greatest at lag5. A 10 mu g/m(3) increase in PM2.5 was related with a 1.31% increase in non-accidental deaths. The connection between PM2.5 and non-accidental death was stronger in femalesthan males, in people aged >= 65 years than people aged < 65 years, and in people below high school education than people with high school education or above. Two-pollutant model revealed that the influence of PM2.5 on non-accidental death was essentially unchanged when CO, SO2, and O-3 were included and reduced when NO2 was included. The multiple-pollutant model showed that the effect of ambient PM2.5 on non-accidental death was reduced. An increase in PM2.5 concentrations may cause an increase in non-accidental death.

Background Prior research indicates a potential link between dyslipidemia and endometriosis (EMs). However, the relationship between remnant cholesterol (RC) and EMs has not been thoroughly investigated. Consequently, looking into and clarifying the connection between RC and EMs was the primary goal of this study. Methods Following the screening of participants from the NHANES dataset spanning 2001 to 2006, a total of 1,840 individuals were incorporated into this research. A weighted multivariable logistic regression analysis was first performed to investigate the relation between RC and the likelihood of encountering EMs. To assess the degree of consistency in the link between RC and EMs across different populations, additional subgroup analyses were performed. In addition, the researchers used the extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) technique and the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) to evaluate how well RC recognized EMs. Lastly, both linear and nonlinear relationships were validated using generalized additive models (GAM), while dose-response connections were investigated through restricted cubic spline models. Results After accounting for all potential confounders, a strong correlation between RC and EMs was identified. In particular, an increase of one unit in RC was linked to a 135% rise in the likelihood of developing EMs. Analyses of subgroups revealed that these relationships remained stable across the majority of subgroups (interaction P-value > 0.05). Multivariable logistic regression demonstrated RC's independent predictive value, maintaining statistical significance after adjusting for confounders. The AUC of 0.614 suggests RC's moderate ability to discriminate EMs, outperforming traditional markers like LDL-C in sensitivity and specificity. Prediction of petrophysical static rock type through nonlinear dimensionality reduction and mutual information

Carbonate reservoirs are characterized by sedimentation, differential diagenesis, and tectonic processes, resulting in significant differences in porosity and permeability among different rock types, with solid heterogeneity, leading to a diversity of reservoir rock types. Due to the heterogeneity caused by the diagenetic process, the precise identification of petrophysical static rock type has always been a tremendous challenge for reservoir engineers and geologists. At the same time, the precise determination of carbonate static rock types can help formulate more appropriate oil and gas extraction strategies and increase the oil and gas recovery rate. In the face of growing global energy demand, accurate prediction of static rock types has become critical. In this paper, we develop several novel methods by combining the Jackknife Mutual Information and nonlinear dimensionality reduction methods for identifying carbonate static rock types. The proposed methods are motivated by the nonlinear relationships between crucial variables and static rock types, aiming to enhance the performance of prediction. We examine the empirical performances of our methods and several other methods on the dataset of two coring wells from a specific carbonate reservoir. The performance of prediction for static rock type indicates that our novel methods provide satisfactory prediction accuracy.

Gap analysis and review of survey effort disruption in North Sea and North-eastern Atlantic bottom trawl surveys

Fisheries-independent surveys are essential to stock assessment, providing estimates on relative abundance, distribution, and biology of commercially fished species. Environmental, mechanical, and logistical issues can disrupt survey operation and reduce survey effort. We synthesized causes of disruptions to surveys using 25 years of publicly available records for North Sea and North-eastern Atlantic bottom trawl survey operations. We assigned each recorded disruption one of three categories: Spatial-long-term (e.g. windfarms, marine protected areas), Spatial-short-term (e.g. fisheries, mechanical, and legal issues), and random spatial processes (e.g. weather and mechanical issues). Furthermore, we analysed spatiotemporal patterns of survey effort relative to effort targets identified in the survey protocols for bottom trawl surveys in the North Sea and the North-East Atlantic. Lastly, we conducted a case study on the Irish survey (IGFS) to explore the effect of weather, time, and geographic position on the probability of sampling an IGFS station using a binomial generalized additive model. On average, the number of stations sampled was lower than the targets indicated in the sampling protocol for the North Sea and Irish surveys. Weather had consistent effects on effort in all three surveys, implying that their designs are vulnerable to the influence of environmental factors. However, neither storminess (using wave height as a proxy) nor station location was a reliable predictor of sampling probability in the IGFS survey. We provide a framework for analysing the robustness of survey designs to disruption. Our approach could be used in the future to monitor changes in survey effort in relation to protocols, facilitating critical evaluation of survey design efficacy.

Weight loss dynamics after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy: a retrospective single center analysis with age and preoperative weight stratification

Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy (LSG) is the most common bariatric procedure worldwide. However, the influence of preoperative factors on weight loss outcomes remains incompletely understood. We investigated the effects of preoperative weight, height, and age on total weight loss percentage (%TWL) following LSG using advanced statistical modeling. 2014 LSG patients were analyzed and stratified by preoperative weight (7 categories: <90 kg to > 160 kg) and age (5 groups: 14-25 to >= 56 years). %TWL was calculated at 1 week, 1, 3, 6, and 12 months post-surgery. A generalized additive model (GAM) was used to calculate Adjusted Total Weight Loss percentage (%ATWL), accounting for height and preoperative weight confounding effects. The population (mean age: 38.0 +/- 11.4 years, BMI: 42.9 +/- 8.2 kg/m(2)) showed weight-dependent %TWL at 12 months, from 32.2%+/- 10.0% (< 90 kg) to 39.8%+/- 7.5% (> 160 kg) (p < 0.001). GAM-adjusted %ATWL revealed superior outcomes in younger cohorts. The 14-25 and 26-35 year groups had comparable 12-month %ATWL (38.2% vs. 37.0%, p = 0.222), significantly exceeding older groups (p < 0.001). Early postoperative %ATWL (1-week) was similar across ages (4.6-5.7%), with progressive differentiation at 3, 6, and 12 months. Preoperative weight and age significantly influence LSG weight loss outcomes. Younger patients and those with higher pre-op weights achieved greater 12-month %TWL.

Relationships between site index modeling of crimean juniper and habitat factors

The aim of this study is to examine the relationships between height growth and some site factors of Crimean juniper in southwestern Anatolia. The data was collected from 130 sample plots selected from 10 districts in western Anatolia. The age and height of the Crimean juniper were measured in each sample plot. Surface soil samples collected from each sample plot were analyzed for pH, organic matter, carbonate content, texture, stoniness, available water capacity, wilting point, and field capacity. All site index values were calculated at a standard age of 100 years old. Spearman and Pearson correlation analyses were used to determine the relationships between plus tree and site factors. According to Spearman's correlation analysis, the site index showed a negative relationship with limestone. According to the results of the Pearson correlation analysis, the numerical variables LATTUD, SLOPE, SURSTON, and HINDEX had a 1% relationship with the site index, and RINDEX had a 5% relationship. Once the binary relationships had been determined, the multivariate relationships were modelled using generalized additive models. The best site index model was obtained using a generalized additive model 1 (R = 0.63), including latitude, longitude, altitude, slope, and stoniness.

Identification of the optimal ground motion intensity measure and input parameters for assessing liquefaction-induced lateral spreading based on the generalized additive method

Seismic intensity measures (IMs) play an important role in predicting liquefaction-induced lateral spreading. Many studies identified the optimal IMs for estimating lateral spreading without considering soil and topography parameters, and their findings are based on numerical simulation. These inadequate considerations may lead to impractical and incomplete results. In this paper, therefore, a large amount of real historical data containing multiple factors is collected, in which abnormal or inappropriate data are removed. Thirty-one IMs are calculated using the bidirectional ground motion records from historical earthquake records. Based on historical field data and the corresponding 31 IMs, the optimal IM is identified according to some criteria considering soil and topography parameters including correlation, efficiency, proficiency, and sufficiency analysis. The results show that the composite acceleration intensity I-a satisfies the four criteria. Additionally, the key input parameters (including I-a) affecting lateral spreading were analyzed using the generalized additive model (GAM). The average fine content and mean grain size are proposed to be removed in the construction of models, which could significantly reduce testing costs and be more conducive to engineering applications. The proposed GAM with four input parameters, I-a, T-15 (cumulative layers thickness with (N-1)(60) < 15), S (Slope), and W (free face radio), performs the best after comparing with other machine learning methods and existing empirical models. A flowchart of GAM usage was provided to the engineers.

Linking summer nutrition to behavior and performance of black-tailed deer

Many large-herbivore populations are regulated at least in part by bottom-up forces, and thus relationships between herbivores and their habitat are of fundamental importance to wildlife managers. Variation in nutritional resources-and how herbivores respond to that variation-influences rates of nutrient intake, which directly affect nutritional condition, pregnancy rates, timing of parturition, offspring birth mass, and survival. Accordingly, nutrition-focused research holds great potential for uncovering the mechanisms that govern population performance of large herbivores and for assessing the nature and magnitude of bottom-up limitations. We quantified relationships between the foodscape (i.e., spatiotemporal variation in forage quality and abundance) in southwestern Oregon, USA, and black-tailed deer (Odocoileus hemionus columbianus) behavior and performance, with a focus on the influence of maternal nutrition on fawn survival. We hypothesized that black-tailed deer performance (i.e., fawn birth mass and survival) is influenced by the availability of high-quality forage during spring and summer and patterns of foodscape use exhibited by individual deer. From 2016-2023 we monitored movement and survival of adult female black-tailed deer and their offspring. We also conducted intensive vegetation sampling and used generalized additive modeling to map the foodscape available to deer in spring and summer. Suitable forage biomass (i.e., maximum biomass of forage that together exceeded quality thresholds for supporting one fawn) was highly variable across space and time, and our top foodscape model explained 70% of the variation in suitable biomass (adjusted R2 = 0.70). We observed a strong, positive relationship between use of the foodscape by maternal females prior to parturition and fawn birth mass. Objective: To determine the indications for early rescue intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) application. Design: A retrospective cohort study. Subjects: The study included 19,808 patients who underwent conventional in vitro fertilization (IVF) or rescue ICSI for their first cycles between February 2017 and December 2021. Exposure: Rescue ICSI cycles constituted the study group, where oocytes that had not extruded the second polar body 4-6 hours after insemination were rescued by ICSI. The control group consisted of conventional IVF cycles with no interventions to rescue oocytes without the second polar body. generalized additive models were constructed to describe the relationship between the second polar body extrusion rate and cumulative live birth rate in conventional IVF and rescue ICSI cycles, respectively. The cutoff value of the second polar body extrusion rate guiding rescue ICSI application was determined from the intersection point of generalized additive models. Maternal age range applicable to rescue ICSI was further analyzed using the same method. Clinical outcomes were compared between conventional IVF and rescue ICSI cycles across different second polar body extrusion rate and maternal age subgroups. Main Outcome Measures: The second polar body extrusion rate and maternal age range for rescue ICSI application, normal fertilization rate, and cumulative live birth rate. Results: generalized additive models showed that the cutoff value for the second polar body extrusion rate about rescue ICSI application was 50%. When the rate <50%, normal fertilization rate and cumulative live birth rate (63.7% vs. 46.1%;odds ratio, 1.609;95% confidence interval, 1.276-2.030) were significantly higher in rescue ICSI cycles than conventional IVF cycles. When the rate >= 50%, rescue ICSI cycles had similar normal fertilization rate and cumulative live birth rate compared with conventional IVF cycles. This paper presents an ensemble machine learning approach that combines generalized additive model (GAM) with eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) to estimate and characterize the spatiotemporal distributions of elemental PM2.5 in Taiwan. Daily field measurements of 12 PM2.5 elemental components were collected from 28 air quality monitoring stations between June 2021 and May 2022. Time-variant meteorological factors and timeinvariant land-use patterns were incorporated as predictors. Results showed that the ensemble model effectively captured spatial variations in elemental PM2.5 levels, as demonstrated by the identification of numerous timeinvariant features using Shapley additive explanations analysis. A comparative analysis was conducted with a model using only XGBoost, which outperformed the ensemble model with higher cross-validated R2 and lower prediction errors. While the XGBoost-only model is recommended for exposure prediction, the ensemble model offers superior interpretability for investigating air pollution sources and aids in formulating air quality strategies from a spatial perspective.
