Shallow lakes are highly sensitive to respond wind dynamics. The phytoplankton biomass production and distribution scenarios vary annually and seasonally in shallow lakes. The present study investigated the impact of long-term wind dynamics to phytoplankton biomass at Lake Taihu. The response of phytoplankton taxonomic groups to annual and seasonal wind dynamics using generalized additive model showed significant correlation. The critical annual and seasonal wind speed was 2.2 m/s showing the highest correlation with phytoplankton biomass whereas, wind speed declined by 0.02 m/s annually from Jan 2000 to Dec 2016 at Lake Taihu. The lower to medium wind speeds with frequent directional switching toward shore areas developed higher mixing scenarios which helped in reduction of water temperatures, distribution and colony formation of phytoplankton near the Meiliang Bay. The onshore winds were most frequent winds with low wind speeds whereas, offshore winds have been observed with medium to higher wind speeds. The results of generalized additive model well described the wind impacts on phytoplankton biomass and successfully modeled the response of phytoplankton to wind speed. Therefore, it has been concluded that long-term wind dynamic control the movement, mixing and colony formation processes of phytoplankton at Lake Taihu. The fundamental mechanism found in the present study was the long-term higher variations (annual and seasonal) of the wind-induced phytoplankton biomass changes which has been considered as the major physical factor regulating the phytoplankton blooms formation in the large shallow lake Taihu.

Assessing the contribution of hydrologic and climatic factors on vegetation condition changes in semi-arid wetlands: An analysis for the Narran Lakes

Vegetation in semi-arid wetlands often serve as a critical habitat and refuge for a wide range of species. In many wetlands, on-ground monitoring of vegetation is either not comprehensive or unavailable, which impedes our understanding of the system. However, basic data on climate and hydrological variables, as well as remote sensing data, can often be acquired. The Narran Lakes system in the Lower Balonne catchment in New South Wales, Australia, is a Ramsar-listed wetland and an exemplar in terms of possessing such basic data. For the Narran Lakes we conducted correlation analysis between the anomaly of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) as response variable and various climatic and hydrological factors as explanatory variables taking into account different time-lag and accumulative time-averaged effects. The generalized additive model framework was used to identify the contribution of the individual variables to NDVI and examine the nonlinear interactions of the hydro-climatic, water availability factors (soil moisture, precipitation and inflow in the study) on NDVI change within the Narran Lakes. We also undertook various cross-validation exercises to appreciate uncertainties in the results. The results show that: (1) Soil moisture is the primary factor influencing NDVI;and (2) Water availability factors interact in a complex manner to affect NDVI and, more specifically, these factors have a positive impact on NDVI, although the degree of impact differs;(3) The impact of the hydrological and climatic factors is highly variable between wet and dry resource states, both for the whole floodplain vegetation and its lignum community. Overall, the analysis improved our understanding of how the driving factors affect vegetation growth, thus supporting the monitoring and management of vegetation communities in the Narran Lakes. The methods can be applied to other wetlands with similar data availability.

Relationships between water quality of a long-distance inter-basin water diversion project and air pollution emissions along the canal: Distributions, lag effects, and nonlinear responses

Understanding and quantifying the influences and contributions of air pollution emissions on water quality variations is critically important for surface water quality protection and management. To address this, we created a five-year daily data matrix of six water quality indicators-permanganate index (CODMn), NH3-N, pH, turbidity, conductivity, and dissolved organic matter (DOM)-and six air pollution indicators-O3, CO, NO2, SO2, 2.5 mu m particulate matter (PM2.5), and inhalable particles (PM10)-using data from seven national monitoring stations along the world's longest water-diversion project, the Middle Route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project in China (MR-SNWD). Multivariate techniques (Mann-Kendall, Spearman's correlation, lag correlation, and generalized additive models [GAMs]) were applied to examine the nonlinear relationships and lag effects of air pollution on water quality. Air pollution and water quality exhibited marked spatial heterogeneity along the MR-SNWD, with all water quality parameters meeting Class I or II national standards and the air pollution indicators exceeding those thresholds. Except for CODMn and DOM, the other water quality and air pollution indicators exhibited significant seasonal differences. Air pollution exhibited significant lag effects on water quality at the northern stations, with NO2, SO2, PM2.5, and PM10 being highly correlated with changes in pH, with an average lag of 17 d. Based on the GAMs, lag effects enhanced the significant nonlinear relationships between air pollution and water quality, increasing the average deviance explained for CODMn, NH3-N, and pH by 93%, 24%, and 41%, respectively. These findings provide a scientific basis for protecting water quality along the long-distance inter-basin water-diversion project under anthropogenic air pollution.

Does Retrofitting Pay Off? An Analysis of German Multifamily Building Data

Several studies have investigated the relationship between the energy performance of buildings and housing prices. First, this paper identifies a price premium for energy efficiency within the German rental market. Then, the indexed price differences and associated marginal benefits are compared with the marginal costs of energy retrofits. An extensive database of Germany’s largest online platform for housing over a time span from 2016 to 2020 is used in a hedonic regression approach. In addition, to extract the marginal costs of energy consumption abatement, a dataset of 1048 rental units regarding green-retrofit measures is utilized. Although a significant green premium is identified in the rental market, the findings suggest that it is not high enough to compensate landlords for the money they have to spend to retrofit. The marginal costs exceed the marginal benefits by far. Furthermore, it is found that the German government’s recent plans to split the carbon tax between landlords and tenants do not change this because the price per metric ton of carbon is insufficiently high. Limitations with respect to the data basis and consequently to the interpretation of the results exist. Nevertheless, the findings can help both tenants and landlords in their decision-making, as well as policy makers in the implementation of decarbonization efforts. © 2022 The Author(s). Clearing Your Mind of Work-Related Stress Through Moderate-to-Vigorous and Leisure-Time Physical Activity: What 'Dose' it Take?

Work is reported as a major source of psychological stress. Because of its role in the onset of burnout and its impact on economic and health systems, work stress (WS) has become an issue of great concern. Two categories of physical activity, namely leisure-time and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (LTPA and MVPA), show promising evidence for reducing WS. Previous findings suggest that LTPA and MVPA allow adults to experience psychological detachment from job demands and to restore their depleted resources at work. However, doses of LTPA and MVPA associated with WS have not been established. This study aimed to address this gap using a cross-sectional, nationally representative sample of 4200 workers. generalized additive models indicated that one hour a day, on average, spent doing an LTPA of 8.5 metabolic equivalents-hour (METs-hour) was associated with the lowest WS level (p < 0.001, Adjusted R-2 = 0.04) while the optimal daily dose of MVPA was around 90 min (p < 0.001, Adjusted R-2 = 0.04). A reduction in WS occurs even with low doses of physical activity, aligning with the tenet that getting some physical activity is better than none. This study's findings offer quantitative insights for guiding health policies as well as future longitudinal and experimental studies.

Development of affect and affective stability in adulthood: Nonlinear age-related differences in daily life

Our objective was to highlight age-related differences in subjective affect and its variations between adolescence and old age in an ecological environment, running generalized additive models to look for nonlinear relationships between age and affect. The originality of this research lay in its consideration of the levels of both affective valence and affect activation. Over a 2-week period, 209 participants aged 13-80 years completed a daily survey based on the experience sampling method, each providing an average of 60 observations. Results revealed 1) two nonlinear patterns of age-related differences in affective valence during the first (declines in deactivated negative affect and deactivated positive affect) and second (continuing decline in deactivated negative affect and increase in deactivated positive affect) halves of adulthood, and 2) one linear pattern of age-related differences in affect variation in the shape of a two-step reduction in the amplitude of variation, with a more marked reduction in the second half of adulthood. Results are discussed in the light of age differences in motivation and affect regulation expertise.

PurposeThis population-based study examines the associations between physical activity (PA), residential environmental greenness, and cardiac health measured by resting short-term heart rate variability (HRV).MethodsResidential greenness of a birth cohort sample (n = 5433) at 46 years was measured with normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) by fixing a 1 km buffer around each participant's home. Daily light PA (LPA), moderate PA (MPA), vigorous PA (VPA), and the combination of both (MVPA) were measured using a wrist-worn accelerometer for 14 days. Resting HRV was measured with a heart rate monitor, and generalized additive modeling (GAM) was used to examine the association between PA, NDVI, and resting *** nongreen areas, men had less PA at all intensity levels compared to men in green areas. Women had more LPA and total PA and less MPA, MVPA, and VPA in green residential areas compared to nongreen areas. In green residential areas, men had more MPA, MVPA, and VPA than women, whereas women had more LPA than men. GAM showed positive linear associations between LPA, MVPA and HRV in all *** LPA and MVPA were significantly associated with increased HRV, irrespective of residential greenness. Greenness was positively associated with PA at all intensity levels in men, whereas in women, a positive association was found for LPA and total PA. A positive relationship of PA with resting HRV and greenness with PA was found. Residential greenness for promoting PA and heart health in adults should be considered in city planning.

In urban and industrial regions, sedimentary mercury (Hg) serves as the crucial indicator for Hg pollution, posing potential risks to ecology and human health. The physicochemical processes of Hg in aquatic environments are influenced by various factors such as anthropogenic emissions and aquatic environmental impacts, making it challenging to quantify the drivers of total mercury (THg) variations. Here, we analyzed the spatiotemporal variations, quantified driving factors, and assessed accumulation risks of sedimentary THg from the mainstream of a typical urban river (Haihe River). THg in the urban region (37-3237 ng g(-1)) was significantly higher (t-test, p < 0.01) than in suburban (71-2317 ng g(-1)) and developing regions (156-916 ng g(-1)). The sedimentary THg in suburban and developing regions increased from 2003 to 2018, indicating the elevated atmospheric deposition of Hg. Together with the temperature, grain size of sediments, total organic carbon (TOC), the pH and salinity of water, 40 components of parent and substituted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were first introduced to quantify the driver of sedimentary THg based on generalized additive model. Results showed that anthropogenic emissions, including three PAHs components (31%) and TOC (63%), accounted for 94% of sedimentary THg variations. The aquatic environmental impacts accounted for 5% of sedimentary THg variations. The geoaccumulation index of THg indicated moderate to heavy accumulation in the urban region. This study demonstrates that homologous pollutants such as PAHs can be used to trace sources and variations of Hg pollution, supporting their co-regulation as international conventions regulate pollutants.

Soilless culture is widely adopted for improving produce quality and yield and increasing input efficiency. Most of the benefits potentially achievable in soilless systems are possible through precise and continuous management and adjustment of plant nutrition. Under operational conditions, the electrical conductivity (EC) is the main driving parameter leading fertigation strategies, but its measure in the drainage water can be not completely representative of the root zone in the growing medium. Nowadays low-cost sensors can be adopted to measure bulk EC (ECb) in the substrate. The Hilhorst equation is commonly used to convert the ECb into pore-water EC (ECw). This equation is widely calibrated for soil cultivation, but unable to perform properly for soilless substrate with high moisture content and water permittivity. In this work, two cultivation cycles of cherry tomato, managed in a closed-loop soilless system, were used to calibrate and validate two alternative models to the above equation (i.e., generalized additive model - GAM, and extreme gradient boost model - XGBoost). The models predicted ECw from the ECb recorded by substrate sensors. Plants were grown in rockwool using two different strategies for nutrient solution refill achieving different ECw trends during the cultivation. The Hilhorst equation confirmed its unsuitability for ECw prediction in soilless systems. ECw prediction through GAM was not satisfying at low and high ECw values. XGBoost was the most suitable model for ECw estimation, particularly at extreme EC values.

Mass Transport in Confined Micro Geometry in Reciprocating Paddle Plating Cell by Numerical Simulation and Neural Network Analysis

The mass transport in confined geometry in a paddle plating cell is studied using numerical simulation with an attempt to extrapolate an explicit correlation to understand the transport physics and to predict the electrodeposition rate of metal microstructures. A moving boundary in conjunction with mapped mesh is used to allow the reciprocating movement of the flow. A correlation is obtained based on a generalized additive model using multivariant linear regression. Neural networks are also used to analyze the efficacy of such correlation and to determine the descriptor characterizing the error in prediction. A two-step convectional mass transport process, one in the bulk electrolyte outside the patterns and the other inside the micro-trenches, is demonstrated to better describe the overall transport physics and improve the correlation.
