Association between triglyceride to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio and microalbuminuria in the Chinese population

The evidence for the association between the triglyceride (TG) to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) ratio and the risk of developing microalbuminuria is still limited in the Chinese population. Therefore, our research will endeavor to explore the relationship between the two. The cross-sectional survey enrolled 32,877 general population from eight regional centers in China. If the urinary albumin-creatinine ratio (UACR) >= 30 mg/g, it was considered microalbuminuria. The dependent variable in the study was microalbuminuria, while the independent variable was the TG/HDL-c ratio. A binary logistic regression model was utilized to examine the independent association between the likelihood of microalbuminuria and the TG/HDL-c ratio. A generalized additive model (GAM) and spline smoothing were employed to investigate non-linear relationships between these two variables. To confirm the findings and pinpoint important turning points, subgroup and threshold effect tests were performed. The average age of the study participants was 57.67 +/- 9.29 years, with 22,052 (67%) females and 10,825 (33%) males. The ratio of TG/HDL-c had a median value of 1.06, while the UACR had a median value of 9.92 mg/g. The prevalence of microalbuminuria was 14.4%. Following covariate adjustment, the prevalence of microalbuminuria and the TG/HDL-c ratio showed a significant positive connection (OR = 1.17,95% CI 1.13-1.21). Interestingly, we discovered a non-linear relationship between the occurrence of microalbuminuria and the TG/HDL-c ratio. At a TG/HDL-c ratio of 0.911, we detected an inflection point, with ORs of 1.12 (95% CI: 1.08, 1.17) on the right side of the point and 1.89 (95% CI: 1.51, 2.36) on the left. Subgroup analyses further validated the results. Our research revealed a positive and non-linear connection between the TG/HDL-c ratio and the prevalence of microalbumin in Chinese individuals. Pre-analytical stability and physiological fluctuations affect plasma steroid hormone outcomes: A real-world study

Since steroids are crucial for diagnosing endocrine disorders, the lack of research on factors that affect hormone levels makes interpreting the results difficult. Our study aims to assess the stability of the pre-analytical procedure and the impact of hormonal physiological fluctuations using real-world data. The datasets were created using 12,418 records from individuals whose steroid hormone measurements were taken in our laboratory between September 2019 and March 2024. 22 steroid hormones in plasma by a well-validated liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry method were measured. After normalization transformation, outlier removal, and z-score normalization, generalized additive models were constructed to evaluate preanalytic stability and age, sex, and sample time-dependent hormonal fluctuations. Most hormones exhibit significant variability with age, particularly steroid hormone precursors, sex hormones, and certain corticosteroids such as aldosterone. 18-hydroxycortisol, 18-oxocortisol. Sex hormones varied between males and females. Levels of certain hormones, including cortisol, cortisone, 11-deoxycortisol, 18-hydroxycortisol, 18-oxocortisol, corticosterone, aldosterone, estrone, testosterone, dihydrotestosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate, 11-ketotestosterone, and 11-hydroxytestosterone, fluctuated with sampling time. Moreover, levels of pregnenolone and progesterone decreased within 1 hour of sampling, with pregnenolone becoming unstable with storage time at 4 degrees after centrifugation, while other hormone levels remained relatively stable for a short period of time without or after centrifugation of the sample. This is the first instance real-world data has been used to assess the pre-analytic stability of plasma hormones and to evaluate the impact of physiological factors on steroid hormones.

Nitrogen fertilizer and pronitridine rates for corn production in the Midwest US

Context: Reducing nitrogen (N) losses can be accomplished by applying recommended N rates and using nitrification inhibitors (NI). In some agricultural systems, managing N application rate or using a NI could improve N use efficiency and increase crop yields. Objective: The objectives of this 13 site-year study were to determine the agronomic optimum N rate (AONR) application rate using linear plateau and quadratic plateau models, determine the optimum pronitridine rate when applied with 70 % of the recommended N amount, and evaluate the effect of nitrapyrin and pronitridine on corn (Zea mays L.) yield. Methods: In this experiment, pronitridine and nitrapyrin were used as NIs and were applied in the fall and spring. This research was conducted in the US in Illinois (IL), Missouri (MO), and Nebraska (NE) from 2016 to 2019. Results: The AONR varied from 176 to 291 kg ha-1 in different site-years. The optimal pronitridine rate was predicted using the generalized additive model (GAM) for each site. A pronitridine rate of 5.6 g kg-1 N and 8.2 g kg-1 N was recommended for well drained (NE) and poorly drained (MO and IL) sites, respectively. The pronitridine application at an average rate of 5.6 g kg-1 N increased corn grain yield 4 % compared to the non-treated control. Economic analysis showed an increase in gross margin returns of 32-67 $ ha-1 in poorly drained soils (MO & IL) when applied at 8 g kg-1 with fall and spring N application. Whereas 10-30 $ ha-1 higher gross margins were observed in well-drained soils (NE) with an application of 4 g kg-1 application timings. Conclusion: The differences in AONR and pronitridine rate prediction observed in this study emphasize the variability caused by factors such as the soil, environment, and their interaction with the N cycle. When we evaluated pronitridine and nitrapyrin with all site years combined, no differences between the two NIs were observed in terms of corn yield production. Multi-seasonal water-stress memory versus temperature-driven dynamic structural changes in grapevine

Perennial plants perpetually adapt to environmental changes in complex and yet insufficiently understood manner. We aimed to separate the intra-seasonal temperature effects on structure and function from perennial and annual water stress effects. This study focused on grapevine (Vitis vinifera L. 'Cabernet Sauvignon') petioles, which being a continuously produced organ, represent the current status of the plant. Field-grown mature plants subjected to multi-annual irrigation treatments (severe water stress, mild water stress and non-stressed) throughout the growing season were compared with greenhouse-grown plants under three temperature regimes (22, 28 and 34 degrees C). Physiological and functional anatomy parameters were measured. A generalized additive model (GAM) based on meteorological and lysimeter-based field data was applied to determine the relative influence of various meteorological parameters on evapotranspiration (ETc) during the growing season in the field experiment. At the beginning of the growing season, in May, petioles in the severe stress treatment showed a stress-related structure (decreased length, safer hydraulic structure and increased lignification), though having high values of stem water potential (SWP). As the season progressed and temperatures increased, all water availability treatments petioles showed similar changes, and at the end of season, in August, were structurally very similar. Those changes were independent of SWP and were comparable to high temperature-induced changes in the greenhouse. In contrast, stems hydraulic structure was strongly influenced by water availability. Regression analyses indicated a relationship between petioles xylem structure and stomatal conductance (g(s)), whereas g(s) (but not SWP) was temperature-dependent. Association between atmospheric PM_2.5 and daily outpatient visits for children's respiratory diseases in Lanzhou

The relationship between fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and respiratory disease outcomes among children aged 0 to 14 years in Lanzhou, China, was evaluated. We utilized a generalized additive model linked by a quasi-Poisson distribution to examine the associations between PM2.5 and paediatric respiratory outpatient visits for time lags of 0 up to 7 days, and stratified by gender, age, and season. Cases of respiratory disease in children were collected from 3 large hospitals for the years 2014-2017 and then linked with air pollutant concentrations from 4 air quality monitoring stations by date. We observed positive and significant associations between PM2.5 and respiratory disease from the lag to lag 7, and from lag01 to lag07, with ER reaching the maximum value at lag07. For each 10 mu g/m(3) increase in PM2.5 (lag07), the associated increment in respiratory diseases was 2.83% (95% CI 1.80%-3.86%). Males were more sensitive to the adverse effects, and the association was more significant in spring (from March to May) and winter (from December to the next February). Overall, the child group (age 3-6 years) demonstrated a higher risk of respiratory disease after PM2.5 exposure. The associations between ambient PM2.5 and respiratory hospital outpatients among young children became partially attenuated after the adjustment for gaseous pollutants in subgroups. The exposure-response curves were positive and generally nonlinear but flatted at concentrations over 60 mu g/m(3). This research found a significant association between ambient PM2.5 levels and hospital outpatient visits in child with respiratory diseases in Lanzhou, China.

Long-term changes in occurrence, relative abundance, and reproductive fitness of bat species in relation to arrival of White-nose Syndrome in West Virginia, USA

White-nose syndrome (WNS) is a disease caused by the fungus Pseudogymnoascus destructans which has resulted in the deaths of millions of bats across eastern North America. To date, hibernacula counts have been the predominant means of tracking the spread and impact of this disease on bat populations. However, an understanding of the impacts of WNS on demographic parameters outside the winter season is critical to conservation and recovery of bat populations impacted by this disease. We used long-term monitoring data to examine WNS-related impacts to summer populations in West Virginia, where WNS has been documented since 2009. Using capture data from 290 mist-net sites surveyed from 2003 to 2019 on the Monongahela National Forest, we estimated temporal patterns in presence and relative abundance for each bat species. For species that exhibited a population-level response to WNS, we investigated post-WNS changes in adult female reproductive state and body mass. Myotis lucifugus (little brown bat), M. septentrionalis (northern long-eared bat), and Perimyotis subflavus (tri-colored bat) all showed significant decreases in presence and relative abundance during and following the introduction of WNS, while Eptesicus fuscus (big brown bat) and Lasiurus borealis (eastern red bat) responded positively during the WNS invasion. Probability of being reproductively active was not significantly different for any species, though a shift to earlier reproduction was estimated for E. fuscus and M. septentrionalis. For some species, body mass appeared to be influenced by the WNS invasion, but the response differed by species and reproductive state. Results suggest that continued long-term monitoring studies, additional research into impacts of this disease on the fitness of WNS survivors, and a focus on providing optimal nonwintering habitat may be valuable strategies for assessing and promoting recovery of WNS-affected bat populations.

Low-cost sensors and Machine Learning aid in identifying environmental factors affecting particulate matter emitted by household heating

Poland continues to rely heavily on coal and fossil fuels for household heating, despite efforts to reduce Particulate Matter (PM) levels. The availability of reliable air quality data is essential for policymakers, environ-mentalists, and citizens to advocate for cleaner energy sources. However, Polish air quality monitoring is challenging due to the limited coverage of reference stations and outdated equipment. Here, we report the results of a study on the spatio-temporal variability of Particulate Matter in Legionowo, Poland, using residents' network of low-cost sensors. Along with identifying the hotspots of household-emitted PM, (1) we propose a data quality assurance scheme for PM sensors, (2) suggest an approach for estimating the Relative Humidity-induced un-certainty in the sensors without co-location with reference instruments, and (3) develop an interpretable Ma-chine Learning (ML) model, a generalized additive model (RMSE = 6.16 mu gm- 3, and R2 = 0.88), for unveiling the underlying relations between PM2.5 levels and other environmental parameters. The results in Legionowo suggest that as air temperature and wind speed increase by 1 degrees C and 1 km h-1, PM2.5 would respectively decrease by 0.26 mu gm- 3 and 0.14 mu gm- 3 while PM2.5 increases by 0.03 mu g m- 3 as RH increases by 1%.

A cooperative regulation method for greenhouse soil moisture and light using Gaussian curvature and machine learning algorithms

Soil moisture (SM) exerts a significant impact on crop growth, interacting with environmental factors such as temperature, photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD), and CO2, ultimately affecting crop photosynthesis (Pn). This study employs a nested experimental design to investigate the photosynthetic activity of cucumber seedlings under diverse environmental conditions and establishes a support vector regression (SVR) model for Pn prediction. The SVR model takes temperature, PPFD, SM, and CO2 concentration as inputs and demonstrates a high level of accuracy (The model's coefficient of determination = 0.9830, root mean square error = 0.9138). Subsequently, through a generalized additive model, the study unveils the significant impact of interactions between SM and PPFD on Pn. Accordingly, this research constructs a Pn response surface based on these two factors and identifies the maximum point of Gaussian curvature on this surface. Polynomial regression is applied to these points, yielding a comprehensive regulation strategy for SM and PPFD. In comparison to traditional methods based on maximizing Pn, this innovative approach reduces Pn by 12.9 % while significantly conserving light (35.59 %) and water (32.80 %) consumption. Although no significant changes are observed in crop physiological traits (plant height, stem diameter, dry weight, fresh weight), substantial variations are noted in irrigation volume and PPFD consumption. Thus, the regulation strategy proposed in this study embodies efficiency and energy conservation in greenhouse crop cultivation.

Environmental factors controlling zooplankton accumulation in the near-surface layer in the western North Pacific marginal seas

Vertical distribution of zooplankton abundance is essential for understanding the linking primary production to higher-trophic marine organisms. In this study, we investigated the zooplankton abundance at the near-surface layer (0-20 m depth;ZA20) and those at 0-200 m depth (ZA200) from 240 stations in the Sea of Japan (SOJ) and the East China Sea-Kuroshio (ECSK) area during summer to evaluate the environmental parameters controlling zooplankton accumulation in the near-surface layer. The total numerical ZA20 was 22 +/- 15% (mean +/- standard deviation) and 15 +/- 11% of ZA200 in the SOJ and ECSK, respectively. Temperature and chlorophyll a concen-tration at 20 m depth, as well as the sampling time, had a significant impact on the degree of surface accu-mulation (ZA20: ZA200 ratio) in a generalized additive model (GAM);the ZA20: ZA200 ratio increased in cold and eutrophic conditions and during the nighttime. The difference between SOJ and ECSK was insignificant, while the zooplankton communities were significantly different between the areas. Therefore, the vertical distribution of zooplankton is seamlessly explained by environmental parameters when setting the zooplankton as one ecological functional group. Members belonging to six orders, Calanoida, Harpacticoida, Cyclopoida, Ctenopoda (Penilia avirostris), Onychopoda (family Podonidae), and Copelata (appendicularian), were dominant based on microscopic observations. When the ZA20: ZA200 ratio was estimated at the order level, the responses to tem-perature differed between copepods and non-copepods groups: the copepods stay in the subsurface water when the surface water is warm.

Enhancing the distribution power system resilience against hurricane events using a bayesian network line outage prediction model

Enhancing the grid resilience against hurricane events proactively requires a pre-disaster system optimization built on accurate system network line outage prediction. In the past, the statistical system level failure predictive model such as generalized linear model (GLM), generalized additive model (GAM), system tree-based mining model (classification regression tree (CART), Bayesian additive regression model (BART), and the topology-based system components' fragility curve (FC)-Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) model have been used to estimate the hurricane-induced damage on the grid system. Although these models are suitable for a long term infrastructural planning, increased prediction approximation error with high computational time limit their applications as a components level predictive model that can be used for a short-term proactive operational planning. To solve these problems, a dynamic bayesian network (BN) model is proposed. The investigation is performed on a standard IEEE 15-bus system using hurricane events data. The proposed BN's system line outage prediction accuracy and efficiency are validated using the statistical system grid components' FC-MCS-scenario reduction (SCENRED) predictive model. Therefore, creating a platform to develop a cost-effective pre-disaster system optimization for system network resilience enhancement against the predicted approaching hurricane events.
