Seasonal, spatial, and water level predictors of angler catch and effort within Texas black bass reservoir fisheries

ObjectiveWe sought to identify seasonal, spatial, and water level predictors of black bass angler catch rates and effort densities (i.e., angler-hours/ha) within Texas *** tested for predictors of effort density and catch rate while building generalized additive models with responses derived from a long-term creel data set and explanatory variables derived from the season of the creel survey, geoposition of the reservoir, and water level data obtained from the Texas Water Development *** significantly affected models, with strong positive effects on catch rates during the spring and fall and strong positive effects on effort densities during the spring. Spatially, the strongest positive effects were observed for catch rates in the southern and eastern portions of the state and for effort densities in the northern and western portions of the state. Quarterly (i.e., 3 months) fluctuations in water level were identified as environmental drivers of catch rates and effort density during the springtime. In South Florida, the Argentine black and white tegu (Salvator merianae), a large, omnivorous lizard, has become a recent threat to the Everglades ecosystem. The increase in tegu observations, especially near ecologically sensitive areas such as Everglades National Park, makes informed management critical to contain the tegu population. Using Very High Frequency (VHF) and Global Positioning System (GPS) telemetry, we tracked 24 tegus in the Southern Glades Wildlife Management Area and Redland Agricultural Area in Homestead, Florida from March 2016 to November 2018 and March 2021 to January 2022. We used generalized additive models to determine factors that drive tegu movement to inform managers when traps and surveillance plots are most likely to be effective. Our top model included temporal (time of day and time of year), environmental (air temperature, relative humidity, rain, and wind speed from closest weather station), and biological (sex) variables. This model explained 34.6% of the deviance in tegu minimum rate of movement. We determined that tegus were most active between mid-March and mid-April, and tegu minimum rate of movement positively correlates with air temperature (i.e., highest activity during the hottest part of the day in the early afternoon). We observed a slight positive trend between tegu minimum rate of movement and relative humidity, and no clear trend between rate of movement and either rainfall or wind. Our results can inform natural resource management actions to target tegu removal and surveillance during high activity periods to maximize resource use.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) deaths attributed to fine particulate matter (with an aerodynamic equivalent diameter <2.5 mu m, PM2.5) exposure are a common global public health concern. Recent improvements in air quality and the corresponding health benefits have received much attention. Thus, we have explored the trends of PM2.5 pollution improvement on COPD deaths during an important period of air pollution control (2008-2017) in Pudong New Area, Shanghai, China. Data, including daily COPD death counts, meteorological variables, and ambient air pollutants, were collected from 2008 to 2017. generalized additive models were fitted to evaluate the percent change (%) in pollution-related COPD deaths. The results showed that the number of days with daily PM2.5 concentrations <35 mu g/m(3) increased from 19 days (5.19%) in 2008 to 166 days (45.48%) in 2017, and PM(2.5 )concentrations >75 mu g/m(3) decreased from 222 days (60.66%) in 2008 to 33 days (9.04%) in 2017. The associations in the overall period between 2008 and 2017 was significant. In subperiod analysis, each 10 mu g/m(3) increment in PM2.5 was associated with a percent change (%) of 0.89 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.37, 1.42) at lag 5 and 0.78 (95% CI, 0.26, 1.30) at lag 6 during 2008-2013. Significant results were also found at lag 0-5 [percent change (%), 1.12 (95% CI, 0.09, 2.17)], lag 0-6 [percent change (%), 1.52 (95% CI, 0.43, 2.62)] and lag 0-7 [percent change (%), 1.72 (95% CI, 0.57, 2.88)] during 2008-2013. By contrast, no significant association was found between 2014 and 2017. In conclusion, the decreased COPD deaths associated with PM2.5 exposure were found, especially after the air quality improvement turning point in 2014.

Spatio-temporal modeling of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis under climate change scenarios in the Maghreb region (2021-2100)☆

Introduction: Climate change presents a significant challenge to global public health, especially regarding vectorborne diseases such as cutaneous leishmaniasis. This study aims to investigate the impact of climate change on the distribution of CL in North Africa, with a focus on Algeria, Tunisia, and Morocco. Methods: We analyzed historical epidemiological and climatic data from 2000 to 2020 and employed a generalized additive Model to assess the influence of climatic variables including temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and precipitation on CL incidence. Additionally, climate projection data from the Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment (CORDEX) under the RCP 2.6 scenario were utilized to predict future CL incidence from 2021 to 2100. Results: The findings indicate an increase in CL cases in Mediterranean coastal areas, particularly in eastern Tunisia, Algeria, and parts of Morocco, due to rising temperatures and shifting precipitation patterns. The analysis revealed varying temporal peaks in CL incidence across the three countries: short-term for Algeria (2025), mid-term for Morocco (2065), and long-term for Tunisia (2085). Conclusions: This study underscores the need for region-specific surveillance and response systems and emphasizes the importance of integrating climate forecasts into public health strategies to mitigate the risks of CL spread under changing climatic conditions in North Africa.

additive Covariance Matrix models: Modeling Regional Electricity Net-Demand in Great Britain

Forecasts of regional electricity net-demand, consumption minus embedded generation, are an essential input for reliable and economic power system operation, and energy trading. While such forecasts are typically performed region by region, operations such as managing power flows require spatially coherent joint forecasts, which account for cross-regional dependencies. Here, we forecast the joint distribution of net-demand across the 14 regions constituting Great Britain's electricity network. Joint modeling is complicated by the fact that the net-demand variability within each region, and the dependencies between regions, vary with temporal, socio-economic and weather-related factors. We accommodate for these characteristics by proposing a multivariate Gaussian model based on a modified Cholesky parameterization, which allows us to model each unconstrained parameter via an additive model. Given that the number of model parameters and covariates is large, we adopt a semi-automated approach to model selection, based on gradient boosting. In addition to comparing the forecasting performance of several versions of the proposed model with that of two non-Gaussian copula-based models, we visually explore the model output to interpret how the covariates affect net-demand variability and dependencies. An extensive line of research has examined linkages among spatially- distinct markets. We apply semiparametric, generalized additive vector autoregressive models to a consideration of basis linkages among North Carolina corn and soybean markets. An extensive suite of linearity tests suggests that basis and price relationships are nonlinear. Marginal effects, transmission elasticities, and generalized impulse responses are utilized to describe patterns of adjustment among markets. The semi- parametric models are compared to standard threshold vector autoregressive models and are found to reveal more statistical significance and substantially more nonlinearity in basis adjustments. Marginal effects are nonlinear and impulse responses suggest greater adjustments to extreme shocks and asymmetric adjustment patterns. The results provide evidence in favor of efficiently linked markets.

Characterization of annual urban air temperature changes with special reference to the city of Modena: a comparison between regression models and a proposal for a new index to evaluate relationships between environmental variables

It is commonly recognized that the observed increase in global mean annual air temperature is strongly related to the increase in global carbon dioxide concentration C, and that both these variables are related to global development. It remains, however, unclear the degree to which local mean annual urban air temperature T is affected by local variables such as annual precipitation depth P and urban area extent A. This study assumes that A is a proxy of local development and C is a proxy of global development and investigates the commingled effects of A, P, and C on T by using long-term annual data observed over the years 1881-2019 from the Modena Observatory in Italy. Linear relationships between T, C and A are found to be spurious since all these series have a monotonic increasing trend with time. Parametric analytic models like logistic functions are found to lack flexibility. Smoothing splines can only give insights into the strength of the relationships but not on their shape defining the functional relationship between variables. Advanced nonlinear models like generalized additive models, instead, are found to combine flexibility in a parametric form, and appear therefore to be suitable models for explaining the complex relationships between A, P, and C on T. The different models are evaluated using traditional goodness of fit statistics like R-2, AIC, BIC, and a new index of relation IR which is introduced to jointly evaluate the goodness-of-fit of relationships between variables that may either be dependent or independent.

Assessing the Effects of Spatial Variability of Field Microtopography on Crop Yield, Soil Water, and Water Productivity Under Rainfed Sorghum Production System

The surface level variations of crop field's microtopography is one of the factors that affect soil water retaining capacity and water productivity. The present study was carried out to understand the effects of spatial variability of field microtopography on crop yield, soil water, and water productivity in the Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) production system under rainfed conditions. Crop field/land unevenness was assessed using the leveling index (LI). In addition, we proposed another approach, namely the standard elevation index (SEI) to assess the crop field's unevenness. The effects of LI and SEI on crop parameters were assessed using generalized additive models (GAMs) with Gaussian distribution. SEI exhibited significant effects on crop yield and water productivity at a significance level of p <= 0.001, whereas LI had no significant impact on these parameters. Additionally, soil water variability had a non-significant effect on the crop parameters within the study area. However, higher crop yield and water productivity were observed when soil water content ranged from 25 to 30%. Further, the results revealed that a better crop yield and water productivity can be achieved at lower LI (< 4) and SEI within the range of -1.0 to 0.5. Considerable effects of spatial variability of field microtopography were not observed on canopy height under rainfed conditions. However, crop production and water productivity under rainfed conditions could be enhanced by modifying the existing field to a nearly flat or leveled field. Comparison of Semiparametric models in the Presence of Noise and Outliers

Various studies have examined generalized additive models (GAMs), comparing thin plate splines (tp), P-splines (ps), cubic regression splines (cr), and Gaussian processes (gp) for discrete choice data, function approximation, and in the presence of multicollinearity and outliers. Some studies have applied ps to models with correlated and heteroscedastic errors, while others have reviewed multiple smoothing term packages for modeling GAMs. This study seeks to examine the performance of semiparametric models in the presence of different noise and outliers within the framework of GAMs through simulation. The study adopted four GAMs, cr, ps, tp, and gp, for simulated data with different noise and outliers with varying sample sizes. According to our investigation, the cr model performs well in terms of deviance for the majority of sample sizes and all types of noise. With higher sample sizes, the ps model frequently performs well, particularly in terms of AIC and GCV under noise that is heteroscedastic and Gaussian. The gp model excels with the smallest sample size under Gaussian and lognormal noise in terms of GCV, and the tp model frequently performs best under exponential and lognormal noise for larger samples in terms of AIC and GCV. For data containing outliers, the cr and tp models are effective with smaller sample sizes, while the gp model excels with larger sample sizes based on AIC and GCV. Regarding deviance, the cr model consistently performs best across all sample sizes. Our results show that the sample size and kind of noise in the data have a significant impact on the smoothing model's performance. No single model consistently outperforms the others for all noise types and sample sizes, suggesting that the choice of model should be based on the specific goal of a study.
