Mixtures with random covariates are statistical models which can be applied for clustering and for density estimation of a random vector composed by a response variable and a set of covariates. In this class, the generalized linear Gaussian cluster-weighted model (GLGCWM) assumes, in each mixture component, an exponential family distribution for the response variable and a multivariate Gaussian distribution for the vector of real-valued covariates. For parsimony sake, a family of fourteen models is here introduced by applying some constraints on the eigen-decomposed covariance matrices of the Gaussian distribution. The EM algorithm is described to find maximum likelihood estimates of the parameters for these models. This novel family of models is finally applied to a real data set where a good classification performance is obtained, especially when compared with other well-established mixture-based approaches.

Annoyance from Multiple Transportation Noise: Statistical models and Outlier Detection

Objective: Statistical models for the annoyance from multiple transportation noise are needed to understand and predict the annoyance resulting from specific noise exposures. Methods: models from the class of generalized linear models are suggested and discussed. Observations which are not well explained by the considered model are regarded as outliers. Outlier detection methods are applied to the data modelled by robust estimates using different link functions. Results: The discussed methods are applied to data from a laboratory experiment using generalized linear models. While considering outliers, a generalized linear model with a complementary log-log link is found to be a good choice in modelling the exposure-response relationship between noise levels and annoyance.

Relations Between Information and Estimation in Discrete-Time Levy Channels

Fundamental relations between information and estimation have been established in the literature for the discrete-time Gaussian and Poisson channels. In this paper, we demonstrate that such relations hold for a much larger class of observation models. We introduce the natural family of discrete-time Levy channels where the distribution of the output conditioned on the input is infinitely divisible. For Levy channels, we establish new representations relating the mutual information between the channel input and output to an optimal expected estimation loss, thereby unifying and considerably extending results from the Gaussian and Poisson settings. We demonstrate the richness of our results by working out two examples of Levy channels, namely the gamma channel and the negative binomial channel, with corresponding relations between information and estimation. Extensions to the setting of mismatched estimation are also presented.

This study provides unique empirical evidence regarding the determinants of deposit pricing by employing data mining methods and making use of proprietary data provided by a commercial bank. Results highlight the importance of taking into account customer- and account-specific characteristics in the determination of deposit rates. Contrary to existing evidence obtained from macro-level bank data, the customer- level data used in this study suggest that depositors with a multi-faceted and long-term relationship with the same bank seem to benefit from higher deposit rates as a reward for being a core depositor. The location of the customer is also shown to have a limited effect on the deposit rates. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Dirichlet Process Mixtures of generalized linear models

We propose Dirichlet Process mixtures of generalized linear models (DP-GLM), a new class of methods for nonparametric regression. Given a data set of input-response pairs, the DP-GLM produces a global model of the joint distribution through a mixture of local generalized linear models. DP-GLMs allow both continuous and categorical inputs, and can model the same class of responses that can be modeled with a generalized linear model. We study the properties of the DP-GLM, and show why it provides better predictions and density estimates than existing Dirichlet process mixture regression models. We give conditions for weak consistency of the joint distribution and pointwise consistency of the regression estimate.

Marginal screening has been established as a fast and effective method for high dimensional variable selection method. There are some drawbacks associated with marginal screening, since the marginal model can be viewed as a model misspecification from the joint true model. A principal components adjusted variable screening method is proposed, which uses top principal components as surrogate covariates to account for the variability of the omitted predictors in generalized linear models. The proposed method is demonstrated with superior numerical performance compared with the competing methods. The efficiency of the method is also illustrated with the analysis of the Affymetrix genechip rat genome 230 2.0 array data and the European American SNPs data. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. Background: Electronic health records (EHR) are increasingly being adopted by healthcare systems worldwide. In France, the "Hopital numerique 2012-2017" program was implemented as part of a strategic plan to modernize health information technology (HIT), including the promotion of widespread EHR use. With significant upfront investment costs as well as ongoing operational expenses, it is important to assess this system in terms of its ability to result in improvements in hospital performances. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of EHR use on the quality of care management in acute care hospitals throughout France. Methods: This retrospective study was based on data derived from three national databases for the year 2011: IPAQSS (indicators of improvement in the quality and the management of healthcare, "IPAQSS"), Hospi-Diag (French hospital performance indicators), and the national accreditation database. Several multivariate models were used to examine the association between the use of EHRs and specific EHR features with four quality indicators: the quality of patient record, the delay in sending information at hospital discharge, the pain status evaluation, and the nutritional status evaluation, while also adjusting for hospital characteristics. Results: The models revealed a significant positive impact of EHR use on the four quality indicators. Additionally, they showed a differential impact according to the functionality of the element of the health record that was computerized. All four quality indicators were also impacted by the type of hospital, the geographical region, and the severity of the pathology. Conclusion: These results suggest that, to improve the quality of care management in hospitals, EHR adoption represents an important lever. They complete previous work dealing with EHR and the organizational performance of hospital surgical units.

Species distribution models are used to aid our understanding of the processes driving the spatial patterns of species’ habitats. This approach has received criticism, however, largely because it neglects landscape metrics. We examined the relative impacts of landscape predictors on the accuracy of habitat models by constructing distribution models at regional scales incorporating environmental variables (climate, topography, vegetation, and soil types) and secondary species occurrence data, and using them to predict the occurrence of 36 species in 15 forest fragments where we conducted rapid surveys. We then selected six landscape predictors at the landscape scale and ran general linear models of species presence/absence with either a single scale predictor (the probabilities of occurrence of the distribution models or landscape variables) or multiple scale predictors (distribution models + one landscape variable). Our results indicated that distribution models alone had poor predictive abilities but were improved when landscape predictors were added; the species responses were not, however, similar to the multiple scale predictors. Our study thus highlights the importance of considering landscape metrics to generate more accurate habitat suitability models.

Robust estimation based on a novel family of arctan disparities and the limitation of the second order influence function

The article presents a new family of disparity measures based on the trigonometric tan-1 function. A subset of members from the proposed disparity family are shown to have excellent robustness properties against both inliers and outliers and are competitive with other popular disparities such as the Hellinger distance and the symmetric chi-square. The most notable thing about the presented disparity is that the strong robustness properties of the corresponding minimum distance estimators are attained in spite of predictions to the contrary by not just the first order influence function but also the second order influence function. This demonstrates the limitation of even the second order influence analysis in predicting the robustness properties of a disparity. Several examples and numerical studies illustrate the aforementioned property. Copyright (c) 2018 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Population dynamics of rice planthoppers, Nilaparvata lugens and Sogatella furcifera (Hemiptera, Delphacidae) in Central Vietnam and its effects on their spring migration to China

Rice planthopper (RPH) populations of Nilaparvata lugens and Sogatella furcifera periodically have erupted across Asia. Predicting RPH population dynamics and identifying their source areas are crucial for the management of these migratory pests in China, but the origins of the migrants to temperate and subtropical regions in China remains unclear. In particular, their early migration to China in March and April have not yet been explored due to a lack of research data available from potential source areas, Central Vietnam and Laos. In this study, we examined the population dynamics and migratory paths of N. lugens and S. furcifera in Vietnam and South China in 2012 and 2013. Trajectory modeling showed that in March and April in 2012 and 2013, RPH emigrated from source areas in Central Vietnam where rice was maturing to the Red River Delta and South China. Early migrants originated from Southern Central Vietnam (14-16 degrees N), but later most were from Northern Central Vietnam (16-19 degrees N). Analysis of meteorological and light-trap data from Hepu in April (1977-2013) using generalized linear models showed that immigration increased with precipitation in Southern Central Vietnam in January, but declined with precipitation in Northern Central Vietnam in January. These results determined that the RPH originate from overwintering areas in Central Vietnam, but not from southernmost areas of Vietnam. Winter precipitation, rather than temperature was the most important factor determining the number of RPH migrants. Based on their similar population dynamics and low population densities in Central Vietnam, we further speculated that RPH migrate to track ephemeral food resources whilst simultaneously avoiding predators. Migrations do not seem to be initiated by interspecific competition, overcrowding or host deterioration.
