Including 10-Gigabit-capable Passive Optical Network under End-to-End generalized multi-protocol label switching Provisioned Quality of Service

End-to-end quality of service provisioning is still a challenging task despite many years of research and development in this area. Considering a generalized multiprotocol label switching based core/metro network and resource reservation protocol capable home gateways, it is the access part of the network where quality of service signaling is bridged. This article proposes strategies for generalized multi-protocol label switching control over next emerging passive optical network standard, i.e., the 10-gigabit-capable passive optical network. Node management and resource allocation approaches are discussed, and possible issues are raised. The analysis shows that consideration of a 10-gigabit-capable passive optical network as a generalized multi-protocol label switching controlled domain is valid and may advance end-to-end quality of service provisioning for passive optical network based customers.

Integrated dynamic shared protection algorithm for GMPLS networks

The path protection approach is widely investigated as a survivability solution for GMPLS networks, which has the advantage of efficient capacity utilization. However, there is a problem of the path protection approach that searching a disjoint backup path for a primary path is often unsuccessful. In order to resolve this problem, an integrated dynamic shared protection （IDSP） algorithm is proposed. The main idea of the proposed algorithm is that the path protection approach is first used to establish a backup path for the primary path; if the establishment is unsuccessful, then the primary path is dynamically divided into segments whose hop count are not fixed but not more than the limitation calculated by the equations introduced. In this proposal, backup bandwidth sharing is allowed to improve the capacity utilization ratio, which makes the link cost function quite different from previous ones. Simulation experiments are presented to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method compared with previous methods. Numerical results show that IDSP can not only achieve low protection failure probability but can also gain a better tradeoff between the protection overbuild and the average recovery time.

Extending next generation network (NGN) architecture for connection-oriented transport

Next Generation Network (NGN) is the architecture of the International Telecommunication Union-Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T in short) supporting the provisioning of Quality of Service (QoS)-guaranteed services over different packet transport technologies. Such capability derives from the effectiveness of a dynamic resource control performed by the Resource Admission Control Function (RACF) at service set-up. Control Plane (CP)-enabled connection-oriented transport networks can guarantee the QoS support for new bandwidth-greedy NGN services across the optical transport segment thanks to the ability of automatic path set-up and traffic segregation. But the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) standard for the CP in transport networks, i.e., the generalized multi-protocol label switching (GMPLS) is not yet included within the NGN supported transport technologies. In this work, we outline architectural guidelines and design strategies for ITU-T RACF employment across GMPLS-controlled networks while providing a viable solution for dynamic resource control that takes into account operational issues for the integration of GMPLS capabilities within NGN architecture (i.e., supported interfaces, actual node capabilities). An NGN prototype implementing the proposed architectural enhancement is also presented as a proof of concept. The prototype highlights how the extended ITU-T NGN can set-up multimedia over IP (MoIP) services using GMPLS-controlled transport objects. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Dynamic provisioning of LightPath services for radio astronomy applications

A demonstration at iGRID 2005 used dynamic, deterministic, and dedicated LightPath network services to link radio telescopes from around the world with computational facilities at the MIT Haystack Observatory to create a single coherent instrument for real-time astronomical and geodetic research. The "electronic Very Long Baseline Interferometry" (e-VLBI) application provides ultra-high resolution images of very faint and very distant objects in the universe. The application-specific network topology carried 2 Gbps of VLBI data from radio telescopes in Europe, North America, and Japan to Haystack for real-time correlation processing. Reducing Power Consumption in Core Wavelength Division multiplexing Optical Networks

This work proposes some heuristic criteria aiming at saving energy by efficiently switching off optical fibers in generalized multi-protocol label switching-controlled optical networks during low traffic load periods and by taking into account network equipment power consumption. Simulations show that up to 80% of energy can be saved when the traffic is reduced by 20% with respect to its maximum. The impact of network design parameters is also investigated.

A Survey on Software Defined Networking: Architecture for Next Generation Network

The evolution of software defined networking (SDN) has played a significant role in the development of next-generation networks (NGN). SDN as a programmable network having "service provisioning on the fly" has induced a keen interest both in academic world and industry. In this article, a comprehensive survey is presented on SDN advancement over conventional network. The paper covers historical evolution in relation to SDN, functional architecture of the SDN and its related technologies, and OpenFlow standards/protocols, including the basic concept of interfacing of OpenFlow with network elements (NEs) such as optical switches. In addition a selective architecture survey has been conducted. Our proposed architecture on software defined heterogeneous network, points towards new technology enabling the opening of new vistas in the domain of network technology, which will facilitate in handling of huge internet traffic and helps infrastructure and service providers to customize their resources dynamically. Besides, current research projects and various activities as being carried out to standardize SDN as NGN by different standard development organizations (SODs) have been duly elaborated to judge how this technology moves towards standardization.

On achieveing bandwidth-aware LSP/λSP multiplexing/separation in multi-layer networks

We present a new Traffic engineering (TE) model which is based on QoS rerouting and uses hybrid resilience to improve the recovery performance of multi-layer networks where an MPLS network is layered above an MP lambda S network. We formulate the rerouting of the LSPs/lambda SPs as a multi-constrained problem and use its polynomial reduction to find a heuristic solution that can be implemented by standardized constraint-based routing algorithms. This heuristic solution uses a cost-based routing optimization to achieve different network configurations which multiplex/separate bandwidth-aware LSPs/lambda SPs on the network links. We formulate the resilience upon failure as a multi-objective problem consisting of finding a resilience strategy that minimizes recovery operation time and maximizes the LSP/lambda SP restorability. A solution to this problem is proposed where a hybrid resilience framework is used to achieve restoration in the MPLS layer to complement path switching in the MP lambda S layer. We evaluate the performance of the TE model when rerouting the tunnels carrying the traffic offered to a 23- and 31-node networks. Simulation reveals that the hybrid resilience model performs better than classical recovery mechanisms in terms of restorability, quality of rerouting paths and rerouting;stability.

In this paper, we study the problem of multi-layer integrated survivability (MLIS) for efficiently provisioning reliable traffic connections of arbitrary bandwidth granularities in the integrated optical Internet. We decompose the MLIS problem into three sub-problems: survivable strategies design (SSD), spare capacity dimensioning (SCD), and dynamic survivable routing (DSR). First, a review of network survivability in multi-layer IP/WDM networks is provided. Then, multi-layer survivability strategies are proposed and it is observed how these strategies could be applied to the integrated optical Internet architecture. We also present an enhanced integrated shared pool (ISP) method for solving the static MLIS problem (i.e., the SCD sub-problem) and the priority-based integer programming formulations are also given. Moreover, we design a novel scheme called the differentiated integrated survivability algorithm (DISA) to solve the dynamic MLIS problem (i.e., the DSR sub-problem), which employs flexible survivable routing strategies according to the priority of the traffic resilience request. Performance simulation results of DISA show that our adaptive survival schemes perform much better in terms of traffic blocking ratio, spare resource requirement, and average traffic recovery ratio compared with other solutions in the optical Internet.

Next generation optical communication technologies for realizing bandwidth abundant networking capability

This paper describes the evolution history of the Photonic Network, and highlights our recent research activities on Photonic multi-protocol label switching and ultra-wideband transmission technologies. The Photonic multi-protocol label switching technology, one of the hottest research area, can be extended to provide optical burst-by-burst data switching. The novel optical modulation technology and multi-optical carrier generation technology based on Super-continuum light sources will be the key to create bandwidth abundant ultra-large capacity wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) transmission.

This paper provides an overview of prototyping research activities of automatically switched optical networks and transport networks (ASONs/ASTNs) in China. In recent years, China has recognized the importance and benefits of the emerging ASON/ASTN techniques. During the period of 2001 and 2002, the national 863 Program of China started the preliminary ASON research projects with the main objectives to build preliminary ASON testbeds, develop control plane protocols and test their performance in the testbeds. During the period of 2003 and 2004, the 863 program started ASTN prototyping equipment projects for more practical applications. Totally 12 ASTN equipments are being developed by three groups led by Chinese venders: ZTE with Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT), Wuhan Research Institute of Posts and Telecommunication (WRI) with Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), and Huawei Inc. Meanwhile, as the ASTN is maturing, some of the China's carries are participating in the OIF's World Interoperability Demonstration, carrying out ASTN test, or deploying ASTN backbone networks. Finally, several ASTN backbone networks being tested or deployed now will be operated by the carries in 2005. The 863 Program will carry out an ASTN field trail in Yangtse River Delta, and finally deploy the 3TNET. 3TNET stands for Tbps transmission, Tbps switching, and Tbps routing, as well as a network integrating the above techniques. A task force under the "863" program is responsible for ASTN equipment specifications and interoperation agreements, technical coordination among all the participants, schedule of the whole project during the project undergoing, and organization of internetworking of all the equipments in the laboratories and field trials.
