Multi-objective optimization of generalized reliability design problems using feature models - A concept for early design stages

Reliability optimization problems such its the redundancy allocation problem (RAP) have been of considerable interest in the past. However, due to the restrictions of the design space formulation, they may not be applicable in all practical design problems. A method with high modelling freedom for rapid design screening is desirable, especially in early design stages. This work presents a novel approach to reliability optimization. Feature modelling, it specification method originating from software engineering, is applied for the fast specification and enumeration of complex design spaces. It is shown how feature models can not only describe arbitrary RAPs but also much more complex design problems. The design screening is accomplished by a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm for probabilistic objectives. Comparing averages or medians may hide the true characteristics of this distributions. Therefore the algorithm uses solely the probability of a system dominating another to achieve the Pareto optimal set. We illustrate the approach by specifying a RAP and a more complex design space and screening them with the evolutionary algorithm. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper argues that the current OO technology does not support reuse and configurability in an effective way, This problem can be addressed by augmenting OO Analysis and Design with feature modeling and by applying generative implementation techniques. Feature modeling allows capturing the variability of domain concepts, Concrete concept instances can then be synthesized from abstract specifications. Using a simple example of a configurable list component, we demonstrate the application of feature modeling and how to implement a feature model as a generator. We introduce the concepts of configuration repositories and configuration generators and show how to implement them using object-oriented, generic, and generative language mechanisms. Interestingly, a configuration repository represents an effective approach for typing synthesized recursive classes. The configuration generator utilizes C++ template metaprogramming, which enables its execution at compile-time. Copyright (C) 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

generative and incremental implementation for a scripting interface

Many systems may benefit from scripting support, but the implementation of it is seldom trivial, especially if the system has not originally been developed with scripting support in mind. In this paper we describe a generative, incremental process for creating an intuitive Python interface to a large, hierarchic COM library. Frameworks compiled from declarations: a language-independent approach

programming frameworks are an accepted fixture in the object-oriented world, motivated by the need for code reuse, developer guidance and restriction. A new trend is emerging where frameworks require domain experts to provide declarations using a domain-specific language, influencing the structure and behaviour of the resulting application. These mechanisms address concerns such as user privacy. Although many popular open platforms such as Android are based on declaration-driven frameworks, current implementations provide ad hoc and narrow solutions to concerns raised by their openness to non-certified developers. Most widely used frameworks fail to address serious privacy leaks and provide the user with little insight into application behaviour. To address these shortcomings, we show that declaration-driven frameworks can limit privacy leaks, as well as guide developers, independently from the underlying programming paradigm. To do so, we identify concepts that underlie declaration-driven frameworks and apply them systematically to an object-oriented language, Java and a dynamic functional language, Racket. The resulting programming framework generators are used to develop a prototype mobile application, illustrating how we mitigate a common class of privacy leaks. Finally, we explore the possible design choices and propose development principles for developing domain-specific language compilers to produce frameworks, applicable across a spectrum of programming paradigms. On the suitability of dynamic languages for hot-reprogramming a robotics framework: a Python case study

SUMMARY The development of service robots has gained more attention over the last years. Advanced robots have to cope with many different situations emerging at runtime, while executing complex tasks. They should be programmed as dynamically adaptive systems, capable of adapting themselves to the execution environment, including the computing, user, and physical environment. Recently, dynamic languages are becoming widely used because of the high runtime adaptability they offer. Therefore, we have analyzed the suitability of these languages to implement robotic systems with high runtime adaptability requirements, using Python as case study because of its maturity. To evaluate their suitability, we have implemented a reflective robotics framework that can be programmed in both Java and any dynamic language supported by the standard Java Scripting API. An example scenario has been developed using Python to show how its distinguishing meta-programming features have facilitated the development of runtime-adaptable robotics services. Automatic library migration for the generation of hardware-in-the-loop models

Embedded systems are widely used in several applications nowadays. As they integrate hard- and software elements, their functionality and reliability are often tested by hardware-in-the-loop methods, in which the system under test runs in a simulated environment. Due to the rising complexity of the embedded functions, performance limitations and practicability reasons, the simulations are often specialized to test specific aspects of the embedded system and develop a high diversity by themselves. This diversity is difficult to manage for a user and results in erroneously selected test components and compatibility problems in the test configuration. This paper presents a generative programming approach that handles the diversity of test libraries. Compatibility issues are explicitly evaluated by a new interface concept. Furthermore, a novel model analyzer facilitates the efficient application in practice by migrating existing libraries. The design and implementation of high level tools for parallel programming is a major challenge as the complexity of modern architectures increases. Domain Specific Languages (or DSL) have been proposed as a solution to facilitate this design but few of those DSLs actually take full advantage of said parallel architectures. In this paper, we propose a library-based solution by designing a C++ DSLs using generative programming: NT2. By adapting generative programming idioms so that architecture specificities become mere parameters of the code generation process, we demonstrate that our library can deliver high performance while featuring a high level API and being easy to extend over new architectures. Tools and techniques for non-invasive explicit parallelization

This paper presents an overview of our experiments in integrating modern software engineering tools and techniques with the process of developing parallel applications for distributed memory architectures. The main goal was to determine the methods that have the potential of reducing the complexities associated with explicit parallelization. We experimented with template metaprogramming, aspect-oriented programming, program transformation engine, and a domain-specific language called Hi-PaL. The pros and cons of using each technique for explicit parallelization are presented in this paper. Our experiments demonstrate that through a combination of modern software engineering tools and techniques, the effort involved in explicit parallelization can be reduced by 90 % without any significant loss in performance.

Automatic Task-Based Code Generation for High Performance Domain Specific Embedded Language

Providing high level tools for parallel programming while sustaining a high level of performance has been a challenge that techniques like Domain Specific Embedded Languages try to solve. In previous works, we investigated the design of such a DSEL-NT-providing a Matlab -like syntax for parallel numerical computations inside a C++ library. In this paper, we show how NT has been redesigned for shared memory systems in an extensible and portable way. The new NT design relies on a tiered Parallel Skeleton system built using asynchronous task management and automatic compile-time taskification of user level code. We describe how this system can operate various shared memory runtimes and evaluate the design by using two benchmarks implementing linear algebra algorithms.

SafeGPU: Contract- and library-based GPGPU for object-oriented languages

Using GPUs as general-purpose processors has revolutionized parallel computing by providing, for a large and growing set of algorithms, massive data-parallelization on desktop machines. An obstacle to their widespread adoption, however, is the difficulty of programming them and the low-level control of the hardware required to achieve good performance. This paper proposes a programming approach, SafeGPU, that aims to make GPU data-parallel operations accessible through high-level libraries for object-oriented languages, while maintaining the performance benefits of lower-level code. The approach provides data-parallel operations for collections that can be chained and combined to express compound computations, with data synchronization and device management all handled automatically. It also integrates the design-by-contract methodology, which increases confidence in functional program correctness by embedding executable specifications into the program text. We present a prototype of SafeGPU for Eiffel, and show that it leads to modular and concise code that is accessible for GPGPU non-experts, while still providing performance comparable with that of hand-written CUDA code. We also describe our first steps towards porting it to C#, highlighting some challenges, solutions, and insights for implementing the approach in different managed languages. Finally, we show that runtime contract-checking becomes feasible in SafeGPU, as the contracts can be executed on the GPU. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
