Damping of low-inertia machine oscillations using Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy stabiliser tuned by genetic algorithm optimisation to improve system stability

The implementation of distributed generation (DG) in a power network may introduce undesirable transients or network oscillations in power networks due to low or no inertia. These undesirable transients and oscillations may be dampened through the use of power system stabiliser (PSS), if properly designed. In this study, an intelligent PSS comprising of Takagi-Sugeno (TS) fuzzy-logic control and genetic algorithm optimisation is proposed to effectively dampen these oscillations. Eigenstudy and participation factor analysis have been carried out to determine critical issues relating to angle instability such that the intelligent PSS can be designed accordingly. The proposed fuzzy-logic stabiliser is tested on an Australian power network using network data provided by an industry participant. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed fuzzy-logic PSS, a number of disturbances have been simulated and the response of the interconnected DG units of rotary type is assessed in terms of rotor angle and rotor speed. The results demonstrate that the proposed fuzzy-logic controller substantially improves the performance of the network transients with DG by effectively damping local oscillations in the machine rotor angle and machine rotor speed.

The optimisation of the controller's gains for an oil tanker control system using genetic algorithms is considered. Manual tuning of a PID controller's gains can be a very slow process so an optimisation technique based on genetic algorithms has been used to optimise the controller's gains. These gains have been optimised for two different configurations: course changing and course keeping.

Synthesis and optimisation of ENR-CR-HNBR ternary elastomeric blend and composites with hybrid CB-silica fillers for hard rubber mountings

The present work focuses on developing a novel composite using a ternary elastomeric blend of epoxidised natural rubber/chloroprene rubber/hydrogenated nitrile-butadiene rubber(ENR/CR/HNBR- ECH) with hybrid fillers in different proportions, aiming to partially replace conventional filler of carbon black with silica as a cheaper alternative to suitable for hard rubber mountings. The work has two parts, the first part deals with determination of optimum blends of ternary elastomers namely ENR, CR and HNBR using a simplex centroid mixture design model. Seven samples are prepared and tested for their mechanical properties using which the optimum combination is determined by adopting Grey Relation Analysis (GRA)-based Response Surface Methodology (RSM) approach and benchmarked using GRA based Kriging-GA surrogate optimisation. The confirmed optimum combination of ECH blend is 33.34/53.33/13.33 phr. Hence in the second part, this optimum blend is taken as the base matrix for developing novel hybrid filled ECH composites by varying the filler contents of CB and silica. Thirteen composites are fabricated following a Face Centered Central Composite (CCF) design and tested for mechanical properties. The optimisation of hybrid filler content is carried out following the same numerical techniques used for optimum blend determination. The optimum filler combination obtained is verified experimentally. Furthermore, these experimental studies are supported with morphological and ATR spectroscopic studies. Effects of Manufacturing Tolerances on Double-Wall Effusion Cooling

As aeroengine designers seek to raise turbine entry temperatures for greater thermal efficiencies, novel cooling schemes are required to ensure that components can survive in increasingly hotter environments. By utilizing a combination of impingement cooling, pin-fin cooling, and effusion cooling, double-wall effusion cooling is well equipped to achieve the high metal cooling effectiveness required for such challenges while keeping coolant consumption at an acceptably low level. However, this high performance can drop off within the variability of common manufacturing tolerances, which can also expose cooling schemes to issues such as hot gas ingestion. This paper uses an experimentally validated low-order flow network model (LOM) to assess the cooling performance of a double-wall effusion cooling scheme employed in a high-pressure turbine nozzle guide vane, subject to the variability of geometric parameters set by their manufacturing tolerances. The relative significance of each geometric parameter is examined by varying it individually and comparing the effects on the cooling performance. A Monte Carlo analysis is then conducted to assess the likelihood of performance variation for a baseline design. Finally, multiple optimization studies are conducted for the cooling scheme, with the simultaneous objectives of reducing coolant usage and maximizing the design tolerances to reduce manufacturing cost, all while maintaining acceptable metal cooling effectiveness and backflow margins.

Hydrodynamic interactions of oscillating wave surge converters in an array under random sea state

The oscillating wave surge converter (OWSC) type devices (e.g., an Oyster wave energy converter) generate electric power via rotating motion about the bottom of the device. This type of wave energy converters have a wide power absorption bandwidth which enables the electricity generation at a wide range of wave frequencies. The power produced by the OWSCs could be maximised by configuring individual devices within an array. This paper examines the power production performance of multiple OWSCs in an array under regular, uni-directional irregular wave and multi-directional sea using the industry standard hydrodynamic software WAMIT. The performance of the OWSC array is represented as q-factor, which is a quantity defined as the ratio of the average total power produced in an array to the power produced by an individual OWSC. The results show that the OWSCs arranged in an array would produce both constructive and destructive interferences depending on the wave directions and frequencies. Further, the spreading function, the resonance bandwidth and the optimal spacing between the devices are shown to affect the performance of the OWSC significantly. The results provide an enhanced understanding of the behaviour and performance of the OWSCs when arranged in an array of different configurations.

Experimental study of semi-active magnetorheological elastomer base isolation system using optimal neuro fuzzy logic control

In this paper, a "smart" base isolation strategy is proposed in this study utilising a semi active magnetorheological elastomer (MRE) isolator whose stiffness can be controlled in real-time and reversible fashion. By modulating the applied current, the horizontal stiffness of the MRE isolator can be controlled and thus the control action can be generated for the isolated structure. To overcome the inherent nonlinearity and hysteresis of the MRE isolator, radial basis function neural network based fuzzy logic control (RBF-NFLC) was developed due to its inherent robustness and capability in coping with uncertainties. The NFLC was optimised by a non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm type II (NSGA-II) for better suited fuzzy control rules as well as most appropriate parameters for the membership functions. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed smart base isolation system, four scenarios are tested under various historical earthquake excitations, i.e. bare building with no isolation, passive isolated structure, MRE isolated structure with Bang Bang control, MRE isolated structure with proposed NFLC. A three-storey shear building model was adopted as the testing bed. Through the testing results, limited performance of passive isolation system was revealed. In contrast, the adaptability of the proposed isolation strategy was demonstrated and it is proven that the smart MRE base isolation system is able to provide satisfactory protection for both structural and non-structural elements of the system over a wide range of hazard dynamic loadings. Design of a low-cost broadband loaded dipole antenna for VHF/UHF frequency range

This study describes the concept and design of a low-cost super broadband dipole antenna with a passive matching network. The proposed dipole antenna is designed in three steps. First, a simple planar dipole antenna with six different loads and a balanced to unbalanced (Balun) transformer is designed by the genetic algorithm optimisation. The position and value of the loads are optimised to achieve an acceptable radiation pattern and voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) over the desired frequency bandwidth. In the next step, the shape of the printed strip dipole antenna is optimised to improve the frequency response of the designed antenna. Finally, an LC network is added to the antenna feed point to reduce the antenna VSWR at low frequencies. The final dipole antenna has a length of 1.7 m and can operate over 30-1200 MHz with VSWR <3 and broadside gain >-10 dBi. The proposed antenna can easily be fabricated at a low cost via the printed circuit board technology. An industrial prototype of the proposed antenna is fabricated and measured. A good agreement between measurement and simulation results is observed.

Load-frequency control: a GA-based multi-agent reinforcement learning

The load-frequency control (LFC) problem has been one of the major subjects in a power system. In practice, LFC systems use proportional-integral (PI) controllers. However since these controllers are designed using a linear model, the non-linearities of the system are not accounted for and they are incapable of gaining good dynamical performance for a wide range of operating conditions in a multi-area power system. A strategy for solving this problem because of the distributed nature of a multi-area power system is presented by using a multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) approach. It consists of two agents in each power area;the estimator agent provides the area control error (ACE) signal based on the frequency bias (beta) estimation and the controller agent uses reinforcement learning to control the power system in which genetic algorithm optimisation is used to tune its parameters. This method does not depend on any knowledge of the system and it admits considerable flexibility in defining the control objective. Also, by finding the ACE signal based on beta estimation the LFC performance is improved and by using the MARL parallel, computation is realised, leading to a high degree of scalability. Here, to illustrate the accuracy of the proposed approach, a three-area power system example is given with two scenarios

Active carbody roll control in railway vehicles using hydraulic actuation

Carbody tilting is used in railway vehicles to reduce the exposure of passengers to lateral acceleration in curves, allowing these to be negotiated at higher speeds with the same level of comfort. This, however, requires a rather complex actuation system that increases vehicle weight and reduces space for passengers. This paper introduces a new concept that provides a limited amount of carbody tilt using hydraulic actuation. The device consists of interconnected hydraulic actuators attached to the carbody and bogies, replacing the passive anti-roll bar used in railway vehicles and in addition permitting active tilt control. Three control strategies for the active hydraulic suspension are proposed, and the regulator gains are defined using genetic algorithm optimisation, based on numerical simulation of the running behaviour of the actuated railway vehicle in a high-speed curve. Finally, the performance of the actuated vehicle is assessed on the basis of numerical simulations, showing it is possible to increase significantly the vehicle's running speed in fast curves compared with a vehicle equipped with passive suspension.
