geo-processing workflow driven wildfire hot pixel detection under sensor web environment

Integrating Sensor Web Enablement (SWE) services with geo-processing workflows (GPW) has become a bottleneck for Sensor Web-based applications, especially remote-sensing observations. This paper presents a common GPW framework for Sensor Web data service as part of the NASA Sensor Web project. This abstract framework includes abstract GPW model construction, GPW chains from service combination, and data retrieval components. The concrete framework consists of a data service node, a data processing node, a data presentation node, a Catalogue Service node, and a BPEL engine. An abstract model designer is used to design the top level GPW model, a model instantiation service is used to generate the concrete Business Process Execution Language (BPEL), and the BPEL execution engine is adopted. This framework is used to generate several kinds of data: raw data from live sensors, coverage or feature data, geospatial products, or sensor maps. A prototype, including a model designer, model instantiation service, and GPW engine-BPELPower is presented. A scenario for an EO-1 Sensor Web data service for wildfire hot pixel detection is used to test the feasibility of the proposed framework. The execution time and influences of the EO-1 live Hyperion data wildfire classification service framework are evaluated. The benefits and high performance of the proposed framework are discussed. The experiments of EO-1 live Hyperion data wildfire classification service show that this framework can improve the quality of services for sensor data retrieval and processing. Nowadays, three kinds of geo-processing workflow implementation mechanism are concerned under Sensor Web environment: process chain mode based on Sensor Modeling Language (SensorML), service chain mode base on Business Process Execution Language (BPEL) and resource chain mode based on XML Process Definition Language (XPDL). In order to achieve the interoperability of the above three heterogeneous geo-processing workflow, the Resource Oriented Architecture (ROA) approach for geo-processing workflow is proposed in this paper. A scenario for fire hot pixel detection workflow under Earth Observation-1 (EO-1) Sensor Web data service developed by CSISS Sensor Web project is used to test the feasibility of the proposed framework. The experiments show that this framework can achieve the interoperability between BPEL based GPW and XPDL based GPW.

With the development of OGC Web Service Program (OWS), WebGIS has progressed towards a service-oriented paradigm that enables a new way to distributed geospatial computing. Many applications require geo-processing workflow (GPW) to take advantage of spatial databases or computing resources distributed over web based their control or task. This paper presents a dual-layer framework to implement geo-processing workflow, in which an abstract workflow is defined in abstract layer to represent a user-specific task flowchart and a concrete workflow is orchestrated in concrete layer to bind geospatial web services distributed world wide. Within the framework, we present a tree-coded genetic algorithm (GA) approach to address optimization problems in the process of instantiating an abstract workflow as a concrete workflow. The algorithm performance is analyzed through an example and well verified by the result from Integer Linear Programming (ILP).

This paper presents a global planning based framework to construct a complex but optimal geo-processing workflow for integrating geospatial web services, i.e. web processing services in a distributed and collaborative environment. The geo-processing workflow is implemented using a Petri Net model, in which the binding of services is modeled as a directed acyclic graph question. To screen the best fitted service among vast candidate services, both functional and QoS factors of services have to be considered. The selection over service functionality is simply achieved using OGC WPS Application Profile that describes services with metadata information, while the further selection through service quality mainly relies on QoS attributes using a global planning method that is discussed in details in this paper. In this work, the OGC compliant geospatial web service is extended to support QoS and a tree-coded genetic algorithm (GA) is developed to determine the optimal composition of geospatial web services. The workflow planning performance is finally analyzed through an example and well verified in comparison with Integer Linear Programming (ILP).

Data provenance, also called data lineage, records the derivation history of a data product. In the earth science domain, geospatial data provenance is important because it plays a significant role in data quality and usability evaluation, data trail audition, workflow replication, and product reproducibility. The generation of the geospatial provenance metadata is usually coupled with the execution of geo-processing workflow. Their symbiotic relationship makes them complementary to each other and promises great benefit once they are integrated. However, the heterogeneity of data and computing resources in the distributed environment constructed under the service-oriented architecture (SOA) brings a great challenge to resource integration. Specifically, the issues, such as the lack of interoperability and compatibility among provenance metadata models and between provenance and workflow, create obstacles for the integration of provenance, and geo-processing workflow. In order to tackle these issues, on one hand, this paper breaks the provenance heterogeneity through recording provenance information in a standard lineage model defined in ISO 19115:2003 and ISO 19115-2:2009 standards. On the other hand, this paper bridges the gap between provenance and geo-processing workflow through extending both workflow language and service interface, making it possible for the automatic capture of provenance information in the geospatial web service environment. The proposed method is implemented in the geoBrain, a SOA-based geospatial web service system. The testing result from implementation shows that the geospatial provenance information is successfully captured throughout the life cycle of geo-processing workflows and properly recorded in the ISO standard lineage model.

A new generation of information infrastructure, Cyberinfrastructure, is being developed to support the next generation of geoscientific research. Constructing distributed and complex geo-processing workflows is an important activity in Cyberinfrastructure. As more and more scientists use geo-processing workflow or service chains to integrate various distributed data and services to perform geoscientific analyses, it becomes important to capture the provenance (i.e. processing history), also known as lineage, of a particular derived data product, so that researchers can determine the reliability of the data products, validate and reproduce scientific results in the Cyberinfrastructure when needed. This paper gives an overview of recent methods on data provenance in both the general information domain and geospatial domain. Key considerations for development of geospatial provenance-aware service-oriented applications in Cyberinfrastructure are highlighted. The results will be helpful for geoscientists in (1) understanding the validity of developing and using provenance-aware geospatial applications, (2) assessing what operational system framework and approaches are available and applicable within their applications, and (3) identifying the critical issues and directing future research agenda for provenance-aware applications in geo-Cyberinfrastructure.

The overwhelming volume of routine image acquisition requires automated methods or systems for feature discovery instead of manual image interpretation. While most existing researches focus on extracting elementary features such as basic terrains and individual objects, the detection of compound feature is still a challenge. This paper proposes a semi-automated approach integrating supervised image classification and geo-processing workflow to discover and annotate compound objects within RS images. Taking the high school in U.S. as an example, we developed a web-based prototype system to detect compound objects. Experimental results by the prototype show that the approach is capable of annotating high schools with an acceptable accuracy. This paper demonstrates a novel way to leverage existing technologies in completing the semantic annotation of RS images.
