Bayesian updating of geotechnical parameters with polynomial chaos Kriging model and Gibbs sampling

Due to the complex nature of site conditions and the influence of deposition conditions, aging, environmental exposure, and characterization techniques, the calibration of geotechnical parameters is significantly uncertain. The present study introduces a Bayesian updating method for geotechnical parameters to address the issues of parameter uncertainty and incomplete parameter information. Developed by combining a high-fidelity Polynomial Chaos Kriging (PC-Kriging) model with the Gibbs sampling method, this approach uses Least Angle Regression (LAR) to construct the Polynomial Chaos Expansion (PCE) coefficients, incorporating PCE as the trend function in the Kriging method to build the PC-Kriging model. The proposed method can avoid the computational challenges involved in Bayesian inference using dense numerical models, effectively reducing computational costs while obtaining the posterior distribution and statistical information of the model. This study primarily applies the proposed PC-Kriging-Gibbs (PCK-Gibbs) method to geotechnical engineering issues. The method is validated on two critical dynamic soil problems: Horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio (HVSR) inversion and equivalent linearization in site response analysis. Meanwhile, the Kriging method and PCE were also used to verify the feasibility and computational efficiency of the proposed method. The posterior distribution samples of the model parameters obtained show good consistency between the sample means and actual values, significantly reducing the uncertainty of shear wave velocity. Compared to Bayesian inference analysis using only the Gibbs method, the proposed method dramatically decreases computation time while maintaining satisfactory results, providing a powerful computational tool for parameter updating in geotechnical engineering.

Advanced machine learning techniques for enhanced landslide susceptibility mapping: Integrating geotechnical parameters in the case of Southwestern Cyprus

This study explores the potential enhancement of the performance of machine-learning-based landslide susceptibility analysis by the incorporation of key geotechnical parameters, namely Plasticity Index, Clay Fraction and Geological Strength Index (GSI), alongside geomorphological, geological, and hydrological factors. Utilizing geotechnical parameters, which are often overlooked in conventional probabilistic landslide susceptibility studies, can provide benefits, as they are directly related to the shear strength of the ground and the problem of slope stability. Herein, three methods, namely Logistic Regression, Random Forest and XGBoost are employed, to develop landslide susceptibility classifiers for the southwestern part of Cyprus, a region for which a detailed landslide inventory and geotechnical data are available. A dataset of 2500 landslide points and an equal number of non-landslide points were split into training (70%) and validation (30%) subsets. After processing the feature importance of 17 causal factors, lithology emerged as the most influential factor, followed by rainfall and land use, while GSI and plasticity index ranked sixth and seventh in the importance hierarchy. The capabilities of the three machine learning models were assessed and compared based on ROC curve analysis and 6 statistical metrics. Generally, the machine learning algorithms achieved high accuracy and predictive capability, succeeding in identifying more than 90% of the recorded landslides as areas of high to very high landslide susceptibility. The incorporation of geotechnical parameters resulted in modest but marked increase of statistical performance metrics.

Bio-Mediated Improvement of Soil geotechnical parameters by the Native Acinetobacter

The application of microorganisms to improve the mechanical properties of soil is a new developing research area. A new native bacteria extracted from soil was introduced for the biological improvement of soil geotechnical parameters. The isolate was identified as Acinetobacter calcoaceticus S1. Sporosarcina pasteurii was used as a positive control. Direct shear tests were performed on the nontreated soil and soils treated with bacteria to determine the shear strength, adhesion and angle of internal friction. The treatment period was 40 days. The shear wave velocity was *** results showed that the untreated sample had relatively constant shear strength, but the shear strength of the treated soils increased significantly. The soil treated with A. calcoaceticus had greater shear strength. The angle of internal friction increased for the treated soils with A. calcoaceticus (39.3%) and S. pasteurii (28.6%). The greatest cohesion was found for soil treated with A. calcoaceticus, reaching 0.66 and 0.56 kg/cm2 for S. pasteurii. The shear wave velocity in the treated soils increased significantly. The results confirmed the ability of native A. calcoaceticus to improve soil geotechnical parameters. Calcium carbonate precipitation fills the voids between soil particles and forms a gel, which makes effective connections between soil particles and makes them coalesce and grow larger.

Negligence/overview of assessment in geotechnical parameters leads to cost, schedule, and time overruns of a project. Improper geotechnical investigation leads to cost, schedule, and time overruns of transportation infrastructure projects. The primary purpose of the present study is to assess the causes of construction delays, cost overruns accompanied with geotechnical reasons for highway projects. In addition to that, the study also emphasizes on geotechnical-related problems in highway projects and their preventive measures. The primary data was collected by means of organized questionnaires which were distributed to the different experts, consultants, and professionals. The data related to various geotechnical-related issues were obtained through the survey. The results of descriptive statistical analysis indicated that lack of boring locations, misclassified soil, high ground water table than expected and seepage problems are the critical geotechnical parameters with negative impacts on cost, schedule and cost overruns of bridge and highway project. The authors believe that detailed geotechnical investigation followed by provision of accurate number of boring locations and design of foundations accounting all the existing complications in the subsoil can avoid the aforesaid issues effectively. Furthermore, complete awareness about geotechnical information of project site, development and implementation of minimum standards for subsurface investigation is a pre-requisite for the designer. Construction of the extension project of the Bangkok MRT Blue Line underground railway was recently started in 2011. The construction of approximately 5 km long underground tunnel and 4 deep excavations of underground station are considered to be the most important geotechnical works. The pressuremeter was selected as a high-quality in situ testing of the soil to evaluate design parameters for the project. In addition, other field and laboratory tests such as vane shear and CK0U triaxial tests were included in the investigation programme. This paper aims to present the ground conditions encountered along the MRT Blue Line extension project as well as the site investigation and interpretation techniques with particular focus on the pressuremeter tests. The results are also compared with the pressuremeter investigation from the previous Bangkok MRT project.

This study aims to contribute to the analysis and classification methodology of geological derivation information regarding the detailed zoning of terrain susceptibility to the occurrence of shallow landslides. A geological-geotechnical classification model for the Corrego D'Antas basin (53 km(2)) was proposed from a geological map (1:10,000). The analysis was based on a set of data built through field investigations and laboratory experiments, later submitted to statistical treatment. Thirty samples were collected from five lithological units and then classified according to the type of material (COL, colluvium;MRS, mature residual soil;YRS, young residual soil) about the following geotechnical parameters: (i) particle size distribution, (ii) Atterberg limits, (iii) stability of aggregates, (iv) void index, (v) dry unit weight, (vi) in situ saturated hydraulic conductivity, (vii) effective cohesion, and (viii) internal effective friction angle. The results allowed the definition of the behavior of the types of materials and the division of the lithological units into three geological-geotechnical units: (i) unit I-gabbro, (ii) unit II-equigranular granite, (iii) unit III-diorite, granodiorite granite, and orthogneiss. These geological-geotechnical units showed a good correlation with the critical classes for landslides related to hydro-geomorphological conditions, vegetation and land use, and slope angle (> 30 degrees). The proposed classification represents an advance in the understanding of geotechnical parameters that are part of the prediction of models of terrain susceptibility to shallow landslides from the geo-hydroecological approach. In addition, it provides an input database for physics-based model predictions in mountainous region.

Correlations Between Electrical Resistivity and geotechnical parameters for Jiangsu Marine Clay Using Spearman's Coefficient Test

The correlations and relationships between electrical resistivity and geotechnical parameters of soils have become very important for site investigation. However, there is a lack of understanding about the relationships between electrical resistivity and geotechnical parameter values. The resistivity piezocone penetration tests and laboratory tests have been conducted for geotechnical investigations of marine clay in Jiangsu province of China to establish quantitative relationships between electrical and geotechnical data. The geotechnical investigation reveals that electrical resistivity values are very low for marine clay in Jiangsu, ranging from 5 to 10 Omega m. The correlations between electrical resistivity and geotechnical parameters are examined using Spearman's rank correlation test that is a rank-based test for correlation between two variables without any assumption about the data distribution. It was shown that the electrical resistivity has strong bonds with the moisture content, void ratio, salt content and plasticity index. In terms of quantitative relationships, good fitting relationships between electrical resistivity and selected geotechnical parameters are observed. The statistical analysis indicates that the electrical resistivity is a good indirect predictor of selected geotechnical parameters. The data studied demonstrates the usefulness of the in situ resistivity method in geotechnical investigations, which have an advantage over other geotechnical methods in cost performance.

Determination of geotechnical parameters for underground trenchless construction design

The design of various components of underground trenchless constructions requires geotechnical parameters as inputs. Currently, determination of geotechnical parameters for application in the design of trenchless constructions relies heavily on the standard penetration test (SPT) and corresponding N-value. However, N-values are often misinterpreted in practices, resulting extracted geotechnical parameters poorly representing the true soil conditions. Especially among the numerous empirical methods available related to N-value, it is challenging for practitioners to find an appropriate empirical correlation for their projects. This paper summarizes ten geotechnical parameters that are often required for trenchless design, including internal friction angle, modulus of elasticity, shear modulus, undrained shear strength, modulus of soil reaction, constrained soil modulus, preconsolidation stress, overconsolidation ratio, relative density, and porosity. Empirical methods based on SPT for determining the geotechnical parameters required in trenchless design are reviewed with ninety-eight correlations between the geotechnical parameters and N-value. Furthermore, comparisons between the SPT correlations are made to provide insight on determining the geotechnical parameters. Four laboratory examples from literature sources related to the design of horizontal directional drilling (HDD) are studied to demonstrate the usefulness of the systematic determination of geotechnical parameters using SPT correlations. Compared to geotechnical parameters provided by researchers that conducted the laboratory experiments, geotechnical parameters determined using SPT correlations resulted improvement in precision by 17% for the estimation of maximum allowable annular pressure in HDD. With application of a correction factor that is commonly used among practitioners, the maximum allowable annular pressure estimated using SPT correlations are found nearly equal to the measurements of annular

The accuracy of slope mechanical parameter values determines the accuracy of slope stability assessments and the effectiveness of protective measures. Traditional methods for obtaining geotechnical parameters cannot entirely take into consideration the size, disturbance, variability, and uncertainty of mechanical parameters. Hence, we aimed to propose two algorithmic models for the geotechnical parameters of highway slope materials based on an improved non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II) combined with a GA-optimised backpropagation (BP) neural network (NN),named BPGA- NSGA-II model and improved BPGA- NSGA-II *** results indicated that compared with the original NSGA-II model, the improved model showed a substantial shift in the Pareto front, and the errors are smaller than the original *** the two improved models, the improved BPGA-NSGA-II model has higher inversion ***, this study provides a scientifically effective method for improving the accuracy of the geotechnical parameter inversion for highway slope materials.

Petrographic features influencing basic geotechnical parameters of carbonate soft rocks from Apulia (southern Italy)

A multidisciplinary petrographic and geotechnical approach, aimed at understanding the conditioning by rock fabric on the mechanical properties of carbonate soft rocks, is shown in this paper. The analysed rocks extensively crop out in the Apulia region and can be referred to three geological units: Pietra leccese (Late Burdigalian-Early Messinian), Calcarenite di Gravina (Middle Pliocene-Early Pleistocene) and Salentino Supersynthem (Midde-Late Pleistocene). 69 specimens of carbonate soft rocks, belonging to all these units, were selected from different sectors of Apulia region and characterized according to petrographic, physical and mechanical properties. Petrographic data allowed us to group all specimens in the following six classes: i) wackestone;ii) mud-dominated packstone;iii) packstone;iv) grainstone;v) fioatstone;vi) rudstone. Differently, uniaxial compression strength (UCS) values classify the most part of specimens in "very low and low strength", revealing a dominant weak resistance and high deformability. Particular attention has been given to the relationships between petrographic features and physical and mechanical parameters of the Apulian soft rocks by means of statistical tests based on the univariate analysis of variance (one-way Anova) and on the principal component analysis (PCA). At first, statistical analysis revealed that the rock geotechnical values are strictly dependent from the geological units. Particularly, the samples of Pietra leccese show significantly higher means of UCS, Young's modulus (Et), and dry unit weight than samples of the Calcarenite di Gravina Fm. Conversely, samples of this latter unit have significantly higher means of porosity, imbibition coefficient and permeability coefficient than those ones of the Pietra leccese fm.
