In many spatial and temporal visualization applications, glyphs provide an effective means for encoding multivariate data. However, because glyphs are typically small, they are vulnerable to various perceptual errors. This article introduces the concept of a quasi-Hamming distance in the context of glyph design and examines the feasibility of estimating the quasi-Hamming distance between a pair of glyphs and the minimal Hamming distance for a glyph set. We present a novel technique to visualize the transport of and conversion between internal and kinetic energy in compressible flow data. While the distribution of energy can be directly derived from flow state variables (e.g., velocity, pressure and temperature) for each time step individually, there is no information regarding the involved transportation and conversion processes. To visualize these, we model the energy transportation problem as a graph that can be solved by a minimum cost flow algorithm, inherently respecting energy conservation. In doing this, we explicitly consider various simulation parameters like boundary conditions and energy transport mechanisms. based on the resulting flux, we then derive a local measure for the conversion between energy forms using the distribution of internal and kinetic energy. To examine this data, we employ different visual mapping techniques that are specifically targeted towards different research questions. In particular, we introduce glyphs for visualizing local energy transport, which we place adaptively based on conversion rates to mitigate issues due to clutter and occlusion. We finally evaluate our approach by means of data sets from different simulation codes and feedback by a domain scientist.

Visual Compression of Workflow visualizations with Automated Detection of Macro Motifs

This paper is concerned with the creation of 'macros' in workflow visualization as a support tool to increase the efficiency of data curation tasks. We propose computation of candidate macros based on their usage in large collections of workflows in data repositories. We describe an efficient algorithm for extracting macro motifs from workflow graphs. We discovered that the state transition information, used to identify macro candidates, characterizes the structural pattern of the macro and can be harnessed as part of the visual design of the corresponding macro glyph. This facilitates partial automation and consistency in glyph design applicable to a large set of macro glyphs. We tested this approach against a repository of biological data holding some 9,670 workflows and found that the algorithmically generated candidate macros are in keeping with domain expert expectations.

The proposed system helps users explore all aspects of the data at once and receive more detailed information about structures of interest at any time. Peaglyph: glyph design for investigation of balanced data structures

For many data analysis tasks, such as the formation of well-balanced groups for a fair race or collaboration in learning settings, the balancing between data attributes is at least as important as the actual values of items. At the same time, comparison of values is implicitly desired for these tasks. Even with statistical methods available to measure the level of balance, human judgment, and domain expertise plays an important role in judging the level of balance, and whether the level of unbalance is acceptable or not. Accordingly, there is a need for techniques that improve decision-making in the context of group formation that can be used as a visual complement to statistical analysis. This paper introduces a novel glyph-based visualization, Peaglyph, which aims to support the understanding of balanced and unbalanced data structures, for instance by using a frequency format through countable marks and salient shape characteristics. The glyph was designed particularly for tasks of relevance for investigation of properties of balanced and unbalanced groups, such as looking-up and comparing values. glyph-based visualization methods provide flexible and useful abstractions for exploring and analyzing multivariate data sets. The Peaglyph design was based on an initial study that compared four glyph visualization methods in a joint study, including two base glyphs and their variations. The performance of the novel Peaglyph was then compared to the best "performers" of the first study through evaluation. The initial results from the study are encouraging, and the proposed design may be a good alternative to the traditional glyphs for depicting multivariate data and allowing viewers to form an intuitive impression as to how balanced or unbalanced a set of objects are. Furthermore, a set of design considerations is discussed in context of the design of the glyphs.

glyphCreator: Towards Example-based Automatic Generation of Circular glyphs

Circular glyphs are used across disparate fields to represent multidimensional data. However, although these glyphs are extremely effective, creating them is often laborious, even for those with professional design skills. This paper presents glyphCreator, an interactive tool for the example-based generation of circular glyphs. Given an example circular glyph and multidimensional input data, glyphCreator promptly generates a list of design candidates, any of which can be edited to satisfy the requirements of a particular representation. To develop glyphCreator, we first derive a design space of circular glyphs by summarizing relationships between different visual elements. With this design space, we build a circular glyph dataset and develop a deep learning model for glyph parsing. The model can deconstruct a circular glyph bitmap into a series of visual elements. Next, we introduce an interface that helps users bind the input data attributes to visual elements and customize visual styles. We evaluate the parsing model through a quantitative experiment, demonstrate the use of glyphCreator through two use scenarios, and validate its effectiveness through user interviews.

Data is everywhere, our society shapes itself through it and, with the years passing by, it is becoming greater in dimension. A lot of this data now available is multivariate in nature. The bigger the volume and complexity are, the harder tasks to detect, classify, and measure characteristics and relations within data. glyph-based visualization is one of the possible techniques commonly adopted in data science to address the representation of multivariate data. Multiple varieties of glyph design have been developed and studied over the past decades. However, little research was done to compare the effectiveness of glyphs designs developed for a specific context of the application. This paper aims to study data glyphs and their applications. More specifically, three visual explorations are produced as glyph design alternatives to represent a dataset related to audiological tests carried out in the population of Portugal. These glyphs were evaluated through controlled semi-structured experiments with users, and a crowdsourced experiment, and then an analysis of the performance result of each of the glyphs is presented, evaluating them in terms of learning and memorization. The results show how the use of metaphors and semantic relations to represent the attributes helps in understanding the glyph and its memorization. Additionally, we identified that the redundancy in encoding data might be beneficial.

We present a system for visualizing food ingredients with a glyph-based approach aimed at children between the ages of four and eight, approximately. The intention is to visually explain and to visually argue that a certain food a child is eager to eat is healthy or, more often, is not healthy. Therefore, we introduced two comic-like characters whose shape and features depend on the main ingredients of food products. These characters can be directly displayed on a parent's smartphone by scanning the barcode of a food product. Our study showed that children are able to recognize several ingredient manifestations encoded as visual attributes and thus to consider a food product as being healthy or not.

HistoGlobe is an interactive historical geographic information system (HGIS) that provides students with gathered and curated historical information for self-study and aids teachers during history classes. The system visually integrates temporal and spatial aspects of historical events, as well as affiliations and alliances of states, routes of historic people and groups, and finally, detailed multimedia information. HistoGlobe relies on familiar interfaces such as globes and timelines but augments them with new techniques including directly manipulable moving entities such as troops and a direction-preserving presentation of treaties and other collaborations based on routing lenses. A field study with 12th graders revealed an overall solid usability of the system and inspired the development of further features.
