We have devised a method to optimize golomb-rice coding of frequency spectra, aiming at its use in frequency domain audio coder, using spectral envelopes extracted by linear predictive coding (LPC) from amplitude spectra instead of conventional power spectra according to theoretical investigations. This optimization improves the efficiency of the golomb-rice coding by allocating rice parameter at each frequency bin based on the value of the envelopes, resulting in the enhancement of the objective and subjective quality of the state-of-the-art wide-band coder at 16 kbit/s. Therefore, the method introduced here is expected to be useful for coding audio signals at low-bit-rate and low-delay conditions, required in mobile communications.

This paper proposes an ECG signal compressor based on optimum quantization of discrete cosine transform (DCT) coefficients and golomb-rice coding. The ECG to be compressed is initially partitioned in blocks, and each DCT block is quantized using a quantization step size vector and a zeroing threshold vector. These vectors are defined so that the estimated entropy is minimized for a target distortion in the reconstructed signal or, alternatively, the distortion is minimized for a target entropy. The final step of the compressor is baed on golomb-rice coding. To assess the performance of the compressor, records of the MIT-BIH Arrhythmia Database were compressed at various distortion levels, measured by the percent root-mean-square difference (PRD), and compression ratios (CR) were computed. An average CR of 10.4:1 was achieved for PRD equal to 2.5%.

The JPEG compression method is one of the most popular compression schemes. There are many hardware and software systems based on the JPEG compression standard. This is an indication that the format is still very important before these systems become outdate. This paper presents an adaptive regression method applied to the standard JPEG compression for archiving higher compression ratios. Besides, an interesting coding scheme, golomb-rice coding, is introduced also for improve the JPEG standard. Since the coding scheme is not based on frequency analysis from certain of images to gain a codebook, the decoded images that are encoded with this scheme are assured in average quality. The standard JPEG compression scheme can import these two for higher compression rates or wider application fields.

Scalar quantizer selection for processing a signal with a unit variance is a difficult problem, while both selection and quantizer design for the range of variances is even tougher and to the authors' best knowledge, it is not theoretically solved. Furthermore, performance estimation of various image processing algorithms is unjustifiably neglected and there are only a few analytical models that follow experimental analysis. In this paper, we analyse application of piecewise uniform quantizer with golomb-rice coding in modified block truncation coding algorithm for grayscale image compression, propose design improvements and provide a novel analytical model for performance analysis. Besides the nature of input signal, required compression rate and processing delay of the observed system have a strong influence on quantizer design. Consequently, the impact of quantizer range choice is analysed using a discrete designing variance and it was exploited to improve overall quantizer performance, whereas variable-length coding is applied in order to reduce quantizer's fixed bit-rate. The analytical model for performance analysis is proposed by introducing Inverse Gaussian distribution and it is obtained by discussing a number of images, providing general closed-form solutions for peak-signal-to-noise ratio and the total average bit-rate estimation. The proposed quantizer design ensures better performance in comparison to the other similar methods for grayscale image compression, including linear prediction of pixel intensity and edge-based adaptation, whereas analytical model for performance analysis provides matching with the experimental results within the range of 1 dB for PSQNR and 0.2 bpp for the total average bit-rate.

One-dimensional processing for efficient optimal post-process/in-loop filtering in video coding

In this paper, of, efficient optimal post-process/in-loop filtering in video coding is presented by applying two separate one-dimensional filters to significantly decrease the computational load of the optimal filtering process at the expense of only a slight quality loss. Furthermore, the compression of filter coefficients is evaluated using a golomb-rice (GR) coding rice (GR) coding approach together with differential encoding. Experimental results show that the proposed one-dimensional processing approach reduces the computational complexity by, at least 4 times compared to the formerly proposed two-dimensional optimal filtering case and enables real-time implementation. It is furthermore shown that, the filter coefficients can be compressed by up to 40% if GR coding is used together with differential encoding(1).

Introduction of processor based instruments in power systems is resulting in the rapid growth of the measured data volume. The present practice in most of the utilities is to store only some of the important data in a retrievable fashion for a limited period. Subsequently even this data is either deleted or stored in some back up devices. The investigations presented here explore the application of lossless data compression techniques for the purpose of archiving all the operational data - so that they can be put to more effective use. Four arithmetic coding methods suitably modified for handling power system steady state operational data are proposed here. The performance of the proposed methods are evaluated using actual data pertaining to the Southern Regional Grid of India. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this paper, a novel hardware-oriented color image compression algorithm based on digital halftoning and block truncation coding (BTC) techniques is proposed for very large-scale integration (VLSI) implementation. The proposed technique consists of a threshold generator, a bitmap generator, a BTC training module, a predictor, and a signed golomb-rice coding module. Because the wireless camera network is developed for perceiving, measuring, and collecting information from the environment, each camera sensing node should be designed to achieve low cost, small size, high compression rates, and low power consumption. Hence, a novel low-complexity, high-performance, transform-free, hardware-oriented color image compression algorithm based on digital halftoning and BTC is proposed. In order to achieve the performance of compressing images in real time, the proposed color image compression algorithm was realized by a VLSI technique. The VLSI architecture in this work contains only 8.1-k gate counts, and the core area is 81,000 mu m(2) synthesized using a TSMC 0.18-mu m CMOS process. The operating frequency of this work is 100 MHz and consumes 2.91 mW, which is efficient to develop wireless electronic systems with the demand of color image compression in real time. Compared with JPEG- and JPEG-LS-based designs, this work reduces gate counts by at least 71.1 % and power consumption by 53 % and only requires a one-line-buffer memory.

An enhanced one-dimensional SPIHT algorithm and its implementation for TV systems

In general, to achieve high compression efficiency, a 2D image or a 2D block is used as the compression unit. However, 2D compression requires a large memory size and long latency when input data are received in a raster scan order that is common in existing TV systems. To address this problem, a 1D compression algorithm that uses a 1D block as the compression unit is proposed. 1D set partitioning in hierarchical trees (SPIHT) is an effective compression algorithm that fits the encoded bit length to the target bit length precisely. However, the 1D SPIHT can have low compression efficiency because 1D discrete wavelet transform (DWT) cannot make use of the redundancy in the vertical direction. This paper proposes two schemes for improving compression efficiency in the 1D SPIHT. First, a hybrid coding scheme that uses different coding algorithms for the low and high frequency bands is proposed. For the low-pass band, a differential pulse code modulation-variable length coding (DPCM-VLC) is adopted, whereas a 1D SPIHT is used for the high-pass band. Second, a scheme that determines the target bit length of each block by using spatial correlation with a minimal increase in complexity is proposed. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm improves the average peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) by 2.97 dB compared with the conventional 1D SPIHT algorithm. With the hardware implementation, the throughputs of both encoder and decoder designs are 6.15 Gbps, and gate counts of encoder and decoder designs are 42.8 K and 57.7 K, respectively. golomb-rice encoding is a well-known compression algorithm for sensor data. When time-series data change drastically with large amplitudes, as found in a pulse signal, the code length based on golomb-rice coding becomes long. In order to shorten the code length, the amplitude of the signal is decreased by calculating the differential signal between a raw signal and a similar signal. In this paper, we develop a lossless compression method for time-series data such as sensor data. In traditional methods, finding the past signal from which a differential signal with low amplitude can be generated is the main topic. However, if there are no past signals that can be used to sufficiently reduce the amplitude of the differential signal, the data compression procedure has little effect. In our approach, a signal that decreases the energy of a pulse signal or increases the energy of the neighboring signal of a pulse signal is used to generate differential signals. In order to select an effective signal, we propose a method for detecting reference signals based on the cumulative distribution features of the time-series data. Experiments confirm that the proposed method can generate codes whose length is shortened. The code length was decreased to 97% on average and to as little as 81% in comparison with the traditional method. (C) 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Universal data embedding in encrypted domain

In this work, a Universal Reversible Data Embedding method applicable to any Encrypted Domain (urDEED) is proposed. urDEED operates completely in the encrypted domain and requires no feature of the signal prior to the encryption process. In particular, urDEED exploits the coding redundancy of the encrypted signal by partitioning it into segments referred to as imaginary codewords (IC's). Then, IC's are entropy encoded by using golomb-rice codewords (GRC's). Finally, each GRC is modified to accommodate two bits from the augmented payload. urDEED is designed to preserve the same file-size as that of the original input (encrypted) signal by embedding the quotient part of the GRC's as side information. Moreover, urDEED is consistently reversible and universally applicable to any digital signal encrypted by any encryption method. Experimental results show that urDEED achieves an average embedding capacity of similar to 0.169 bit per every bit of the encrypted (host) signal. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
