The field of ultrasonic nondestructive testing has known a great development during the recent years. In order to increase the flaw detection sensitivity, many improvements have been made in the equipment and the sensors technology. In the present work, the optimal command which maximizes the flaw detection is investigated experimentally. A parametric optimization consisting of finding the optimal excitation frequency which maximizes the Euclidean distance between a reference medium and a medium with a linear flaw has been obtained automatically by using the gradient descent algorithm. Moreover, the waveform excitation optimization has been considered. A set of stochastic signals have been transmitted to the medium. A closed loop optimization process based on a genetic algorithm allowed to find the optimal excitation without a priori knowledge on the shape of the signal. This optimal excitation converged to a sinusoidal pulse with the optimal frequency found by the parametric optimization.

This paper describes an evaluation system, which can visually display and evaluate the user's performance in his physical rehabilitation. The system is composed of a body sensor network with low cost MEMS inertial measurement units(IMUs), which is capable of measuring the orientations of all body joints. Every joints orientation is represented relative to its parent joint according to human skeleton and they are used as features to evaluate. The system uses OGRE(Object-Oriented Graphics Rendering Engine) to reconstruct and display the three-dimensional motion of a human body in virtual scenes on computers. To evaluate the user's performance of rehabilitation, the body motion data are analyzed with Dynamic Time Warping(DTW) algorithm, and are compared with the standard motion sequences from health experts. The DTW algorithm can measure the distance between sequences of varying speed, and avoid the problem of different speed of doing a same motion.

In this paper, an improved iterative method for attitude determination using microelectromechanical-system (MEMS) Magnetic, Angular Rate, and Gravity (MARG) sensors is proposed. The proposed complementary filter is motivated by several existing algorithms and it decreases the amount of variables for iteration which consequently lowers the convergence time. To enhance the adaptive ability i.e. the performance under external acceleration, of the proposed method, a novel scheme is designed, where the gravity estimation residual is utilized for adaptive tuning of the complementary gain. Experiments are carried out to demonstrate the advantages of the proposed method. The comparisons with representative methods show that the proposed method is more effective, not only in convergence speed, but in dynamic performance under harsh conditions as well.

Single-phase inverters are becoming increasingly important and popular because of the rise of distributed renewable energy. The mainstream single-phase inverter control methods include proportional resonance (PR) control and proportional integral (PI) control, which need to adjust parameters according to manual experience. In this article, an echo state network (ESN) controller is designed to control L-filter single phase inverter. Firstly, the relevant factors affecting the modulation wave required by PWM are selected by analyzing the working principle of the inverter circuit. Secondly, the nonlinear relationship between them and the modulated wave is established by ESN and gradient descent (GD) algorithm to achieve high-precision approximation of the modulated wave, which avoids the problem of artificial parameter adjustment. Finally, the simulation is carried out on MATLAB/Simulink platform. The experiments show that the ESN controller can not only accurately approximate the modulation signal required to realize the inverter control, but also compared with PR controller and PI controller, the ESN controller can realize stable grid-connection without adjustment in the initial state, and has good dynamic performance.

Precise measurement and characterization of millimeter wave channels requires antennas capable of high angular resolution to resolve closely spaced multipath sources. To achieve angular resolution on the order of a few degrees these antennas must be electrically large which is impractical for phased array architectures at millimeter wave frequencies. An alternative approach is to synthesize a virtual aperture in space by using an accurate mechanical positioner to move a receive antenna to points along a sampling grid. An advantage of creating virtual apertures is that the received signal is digitized at every spatial sample position which enables the use of sophisticated angle estimation algorithms such as maximum likelihood (ML) techniques. The main contribution of this paper is a new gradient-based implementation of maximum likelihood angle estimation that was demonstrated on virtual array data collected at 28 GHz using a vector network analyzer (VNA).

A concept of a Hybrid Wavefront-based Stochastic Parallel gradient Decent (WSPGD) Adaptive Optics (AO) system for correcting the combined effects of Beacon Anisoplanatism and Thermal Blooming is introduced. This system integrates a conventional phase conjugate (PC) AO system with a WSPGD AO system. It uses on-axis wavefront measurements of a laser return from an extended beacon to generate initial deformable mirror (DM) commands. Since high frequency phase components are removed from the wavefront of a laser return by a low-pass filter effect of an extended beacon, the system also uses off-axis wavefront measurements to provide feedback for a multi-dithering beam control algorithm in order to generate additional DM commands that account for those missing high frequency phase components. Performance of the Hybrid WSPGD AO system was evaluated in simulation using a wave optics code. Numerical analysis was performed for two tactical scenarios that included ranges of L = 2 km and L = 20 km, ratio of aperture diameter to Fried parameter, D/r(0), of up to 15, ratio of beam spot size at the target to isoplanatic angle, theta(B)/theta(0), of UP to 40, and general distortion number characterizing the strength of Thermal Blooming, N-d = 50, 75, and 100. A line-of-sight in the corrected beam was stabilized using a target-plane tracker. The simulation results reveal that the Hybrid WSPGD AO system can efficiently correct the effects of Beacon Anisoplanatism and Thermal Blooming, providing improved compensation of Thermal Blooming in the presence of strong turbulence. Simulation results also indicate that the Hybrid WSPGD AO system outperforms a conventional PC AO system, increasing the Strehl ratio by up to 300% in less than 50 iterations. A follow-on laboratory demonstration performed under a separate program confirmed our theoretical predictions.

A novel single neuron speed controller of permanent magnet synchronous motor drive is presented, which is on-line trained by a gradient descent algorithm based on direct model reference adaptive control (MRAC) and field-oriented control scheme. A new error function is used to ensure motor speed tracking better. The system of permanent magnet synchronous motor drive is proved to be stable. The controller Is very simple and easy to be achieved on a digital computer. The simulation results reveal that proposed method can ensure motor speed tracking quickly and precisely and have good performance of the load disturbance attenuation.

A PSO (particle swarm optimization) algorithm with multiple groups and two-layer structure(MTPSO) is proposed. First, the whole particle swarm is divided into several groups, each one is optimized. For enhance efficiency in the optimization process, each particle adopts a mixed algorithm of negative gradient. Secondly, according to the function value of each particle solution, the particle group is divided into two structures: the elite layer and the ordinary layer. In the algorithm initialization phase, the particles with the best value in each group are selected into the elite layer. The particles in the elite layer are relatively fixed and regularly selected (similar to the parliamentary mechanism in human society), that is, each elite layer as a whole. After several iterations of optimization calculations in the same way as the normal layer, the new elite layer is formed again according to the previou method. The optimal solution calculated by the elite layer is added as a global optimal solution to the position update formula of each particle. Similarly, the optimal solution for the common layer is also added to the update formula for each particle in the elite layer. It reflects the upper and lower particle's mutual penetration and mutual influence of. Simulation experiments show the proposed algorithm is able to avoid premature and powerful global optimization ability and fast convergence, PSO's computing efficiency.

Doppler radar sensor has been widely used in noncontact bio-signal monitoring. This paper aims at recovering bio-signals from body movement. To solve the severe phase wrapping and saturation problems in large-scale body movement, as well as unwanted DC offsets and gradual changes of received microwave power problems, curve fitting technology is employed to compensate for the large-scale body movement to recover small-scale bio-signal based on a digital-IF structured, high-dynamic-range Doppler radar sensor and linearized demodulated algorithms. Experimental validations show weak bio-signal hidden in the strong body movement noise can be well extracted.

Our work is devoted to optimal control of a double-pipe heat exchanger system modeled as coupled hyperbolic partial differential equations (PDEs) of first order in time and space based on adjoint method-calculus of variations, which should be associated with numerical techniques to get solutions. A gradient descent algorithm, which is proved to be convergent after few iterations, is applied to solve the optimal control problem of this heat exchanger (HE) system. Based on the real data in a system, the simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control approach to control the temperatures along the pipes of the HE system, and that the safety of both system and performance is ensured. From these results, we concluded that the gradient descent algorithm is convergent and the method is effective in the optimal control problem of coupled hyperbolic PDEs.
