Reading comprehension requires readers to connect ideas within and across texts to produce a coherent mental representation. One important factor in that complex process regards the cohesion of the document(s). Here, we tackle the challenge of providing researchers and practitioners with a tool to visualize text cohesion both within (intra) and between (inter) texts. This tool, Multidocument Cohesion Network Analysis (MD-CNA), expands the structure of a CNA graph with lexical overlap links of multiple types, together with coreference links to highlight dependencies between text fragments of different granularities. We introduce two visualizations of the CNA graph that support the visual exploration of intratextual and intertextual links. First, a hierarchical view displays a tree-structure of discourse as a visual illustration of CNA links within a document. Second, a grid view available at paragraph or sentence levels displays links both within and between documents, thus ensuring ease of visualization for links spanning across multiple documents. Two use cases are provided to evaluate key functionalities and insights for each type of visualization.

Integrated analysis of mRNA and miRNAs is essential to comprehend regulation of gene expression. In this paper, we present a case study with miRTarVis, a recently introduced visual analytics tool that supports effective visualizations of the miRNA target prediction results. In the case study, we evaluate the feasibility of miRTarVis by applying it to analyzing miRNA-mRNA expression profiles from TCGA (The Cancer Genome Atlas) breast cancer dataset. Our study results show that miRTarVis can be effective in confirming the previously reported miRNA-mRNA interactions, and it has potential to help researchers generate new hypotheses when it is applied to new dataset.

In this paper, we present a set of algorithms to compute a foresighted graph layout. We aim to produce a dynamic graph drawing that allows the users to track actors in a dynamic social network, supporting a satisfying user experience along with an efficient visual search and recognition of elements. The drawings produced by the algorithms were evaluated through a study, which combined the use of questionnaires, an eye-tracking device and a model we developed to measure the visual stability of dynamic graph drawings. The results suggest dynamic graph drawings achieving visual stability by placing multiple actors in the same position are confusing and are not efficient in the visual search. On the contrary, introducing a restriction to prevent too many actors to occupy the same position produces the desired drawing.

In this paper, we propose a mathematical model to measure the visual stability of dynamic graph drawings. Our approach was validated through a study, which combined the use of questionnaires and an eye-tracking device. The participants of the study had to track members of a software development community over five periods of time in three different dynamic graph drawings. The results suggest that dynamic graph drawings making use of fixed positions are more efficient in the visual search but are limited in the recognition of single elements. On the other hand, dynamic graph drawings with the minimal changes or a constant structure improve the recognition of single elements but lose efficiency in the visual search.

In this paper we present our early experience analyzing subsystem similarity in industrial automotive models. We apply our model clone detection tool, SIMONE, to identify identical and near-miss Simulink subsystem clones and cluster them into classes based on clone size and similarity threshold. We then analyze clone detection results using graph visualizations generated by the SIMgraph, a SIMONE extension, to identify subsystem patterns. SIMgraph provides us and our industrial partners with new interesting and useful insights that improves our understanding of the analyzed models and suggests better ways to maintain them.
