In this paper, we present an analysis of 123 students' (aged 9-12) digital stories created in a visual block-based programming language across three grade levels (grades 4-6). These students were all involved in the same introductory computer science curriculum. Participating students attended the same school and received computer science instruction from the same teacher within the context of the academic day. We analyzed each project for the extent of user-centered design that the student programmed. Specifically, we identified two components of user-centered design: 1) the programmed control choices students used, and 2) if/how they communicated those mechanisms of control to the user. Our work indicates that students in fifth and sixth grade (aged 10-12) used higher diversity of event blocks and coordinated action across multiple sprites at a higher rate compared to fourth grade students (aged 9-10). In contrast, fourth grade students tended to create more simplistic programs, rarely coordinating actions across multiple sprites. This work suggests that the construct of user-centered design within visual block-based programming languages is more complex than previously indicated. Additionally, explicit instruction about user-centered design is necessary, but may be more effective when a student reaches the age of 10 or 11 years old.

The interest in artificial intelligence (AI) education is growing exponentially;nevertheless, how to learn about AI, particularly Natural Language Processing (NLP), has been a challenging problem for educators and researchers worldwide. This study used a graphical programming platform Snap! to facilitate learning by allowing learners to explore AI and its NLP techniques in class. Data from 18,452 logged events were collected and Lag Sequential Analysis (LSA) was used to examine how learners behaved and learned sequentially. Non-cognitive factors were used to group learners as detailed and subtle behavior sequences that did not occur by chance could be uncovered. The results showed that five groups of learners, that is Passive Learners, Performers, Adaptive Learners, Interested Learners, and Dedicated Learners. They presented varied learning behavior patterns, which should be considered further in designing personalized and intelligent learning platforms to support AI education.

AN OBJECT-ORIENTED SIMULATION ENVIRONMENT FOR AIRBASE LOGISTICS

The subject of this paper, the Integrated Model Development Environment (IMDE), addresses basic difficulties experienced in simulating airbase logistics. These difficulties arise during two major modeling activities: 1) developing the conceptual model, and 2) translating the conceptual model to a particular simulation software implementation. The difficulty of the former activity is largely irreducible, a consequence of the inherent complexity of large, dynamic, and uncertain military systems such as airbase logistics. However, while the latter activity is also complex, key technologies have the potential to simplify this part of the modeling process. This paper discusses how a synergistic combination of object-oriented programming and data bases, graphical programming, software environments, and powerful computer workstations can provide significant enhancements to simulation modeling capabilities. In addition, the paper presents the object-oriented decomposition of the airbase logistics domain as it is implemented in IMDE. The paper also discusses how the IMDE design meets the needs of airbase logistics modelers with widely differing capabilities and mission requirements. This is accomplished by providing different modeling "levels", each with its own user interface, skill requirements and degree of access to modeling tools. The paper concludes with a description of the current status of this large scale research and development effort.

Designers need rapid prototyping tools that are embeddable, easily configured and can control a large range of accessories. Current prototyping tools fall short on these requirements by requiring one or more of the following: a tether to a computer, textual programming, and/or limited accessory control. To overcome the limitations of current tools, we have developed Buttercup, a standalone embedded sensor/effector controller that provides a high degree of customization for rapid prototyping interactive devices. The keys to the implementation of Buttercup are its hardware and firmware architecture. By building a system focused on sensor and effector control, the hardware can be small and inexpensive. The firmware utilizes a unique mapping system that lends itself to robust control over its accessories while allowing intuitive configuration by the user through a graphical user interface.

As more elementary schools commit to integrating computer science instruction into their curricula, they seek guidance on what concepts are appropriate for students at different grade levels. Currently, little is known about how best to sequence computer science learning across elementary grades. In this paper, we present an analysis of 123 students' ( age 9-12, grades 4-6) activities in a curriculum implemented in a visual block-based programming language. The goal of this work is to better understand the developmental appropriateness of foundational computer science ideas. All 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students in a single school completed the first module of a curriculum during the same school year with the same instructor. We analyzed each task students attempted and found that for simple concepts, there was little difference in performance between grade levels. However, differences were found for more complex topics, such as whether they completed initialization tasks and the way in which they solved 2-d navigation tasks. A closer look revealed that students understood the basic concepts, but were challenged by deeper applications of the basic concepts and influenced by non-computer science skills. This work serves as an empirically grounded investigation of elementary computer science learning and contributes to our understanding of computer science learning trajectories and concept sequencing in the late elementary grades.

This paper presents a real-time software implementation of the entire MP3 decoder system using LabVIEW. LabVIEW is a widely used graphical programming environment which allows designing systems in an intuitive block-based manner as compared to the commonly used text-based programming languages. After providing an overview of the components of the MP3 decoder system, issues related to its real time implementation are discussed. Decoding times of several MP3 files are presented to demonstrate the real-time capability of the decoder.

The paper presents an Embedded Motor Drive Prototyping test bench for developing and study energy efficient of the motor drives. The development platform uses an eZdsp target controller with power stage converter that employs Targeted Code Generation from Matlab-Simulink and the Target Support Package for the TI C2000 microcontrollers. Computer Aided Control System Design (CACSD) tools are used to generate real-time code automatically. The reason is to simplify the programming process by making it more graphical and thus more intuitive. Application performances of the electrical drives require energy efficiency, flexibility, outstanding reliability and robust control. Servo drives with Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSM) have wide industrial applications where the speed and torque response with high-performance operations are required. The controller drives are implemented by field-orientation control mode (FOC) since the method laid the motors at maximum theoretical performances. A graphical programming interface with hardware-in-loop design processes is used for testing the algorithms controller. The performances are tested in a rapid prototyping approach using Matlab/Simulink and the Real Time Workshop (RTW) toolbox and represent a solution for educational purposes.

This paper proposes an education robotic platform that aims to improve teaching methods of programming and robotics skills, for both beginner and advanced users. We propose an innovative platform that consists of a versatile set of sensors and actuators, controlled by utilizing a user-friendly visual programming language through a mobile phone interface, or by utilizing a representational state transfer application programming interface for more advanced users. Suggested methods form the foundation of problem-based learning, by emphasizing hands-on experimental assignments and activities, and collaborative learning. We present the software and hardware architecture of the system, and case studies for utilizing different control modes. Consequently, students can improve their understanding of basic robotic concepts by observing real-time response and feedback of the actuator and sensor modules integrated in the robotic platform.

In this paper, we present an efficient method for automatically generalizing programs written in spreadsheet languages. The strategy is to do generalization through incremental analysis of logical relationships among concrete program entities from the perspective of a particular computational goal. The method uses deductive dataflow analysis with algebraic back-substitution rather than inference with heuristics, and there is no need for generalization-related dialog with the user. We present the algorithms and their time complexities and show that, because the algorithms perform their analyses incrementally, on only the on-screen program elements rather than on the entire program, the method is scalable. Performance data is presented to help demonstrate the scalability. © 2002, ACM. All rights reserved.
