A service robot is a complicated system integrating multi-disciplinary technologies, and robotic graphical programming is one of the key technologies for intelligent service robots. Based on the modularization and standardization of robot technology, this paper proposes an RTC (Robot Technology Component) based distributed structure framework robot system. In addition, this paper develops RTC functional components and establishes a 3D simulation and graphical programming system for intelligent service robots. A 3D simulation validation experiment is also presented, demonstrating that SmartPal dual-arm service robots execute pick & place tasks. The experiment shows that this intelligent programming system is an excellent robotic development tool. It has strong advantages in both its expansibility and integration ability, and it provides a convenient way for reducing the development costs of intelligent service robots.

Computational thinking (CT), a transversal intellectual foundation integral to computer science, is making its way into compulsory comprehensive education worldwide. Students are expected to attain skills and knowledge in such interdisciplinary CT principles as Algorithmic thinking, Data representation, and Debugging. Problem-solving by designing and manipulating interactive media with Scratch, a graphical programming tool, is popular especially at the primary school level. However, there has been confusion regarding how introductory CT can be operationalized for educational practice. Teachers and students need research-based knowledge for setting appropriate learning goals in addition to instruments for formative assessment that potentially improve the quality of learning. This study contributes to these issues by developing the assessment for learning of CT via Scratch in primary school settings. A review on prior studies involving the assessment of CT-related computational ideas in Scratch has led to the conceptualization of a revised assessment framework. Next steps in the study are analyzing fourth grade students' (N=58) Scratch projects and exploring complementary methods for analyzing CT in video recordings of the students' programming processes.

This paper deals with the usage of National Instruments LabVIEW and its dedicated control platforms in the field of Power Electronics and Drives (PED) control applications. Specific requests of the PED field are covered with respect to the Real-Time target, formally microprocessor, and the on-board FPGA. Paper is focused mainly on algorithm implementation and testing, as well as performance and resource utilization are discussed. Benefits of graphical programming are highlighted and compared with conventional text-based code editing methods, such as VHDL and Verilog.

The multiplication algorithms that we teach elementary students are designed to be efficient, but the conceptual understanding of these algorithms is usually hidden behind this efficiency. For example, one intuitive meaning of multiplication is that of iterated addition. In this paper, we investigate the ways a visual programming activity leverages the concept of iteration to learn multiplication. We report results of a mixed-methods study on second-grade students' use of visual programming and iteration to set up and solve multiplication story problems. We found qualitative evidence that participants gained improved intuition of multiplication as repeated addition and that they made important connections between the programming blocks and multiplication story problems.

The paper presents the solution for monitoring the operation of the MZGS 100 type fatigue test stand. Originally, the test stand enable testing at manual settings. The measurements of load conditions were only used to monitor the process without feedback in the control system. The control and measuring system was developed based on the idea of virtual instruments. The control system uses standard measuring system solutions and their coupling with the executive elements of the station was made using the LabVIEW graphic programming environment. The proposed solution allows the functionality of the stand to be extended with new fatigue testing procedures, e.g. tests under programmed block loads. The machine's overload protection has also been improved.

This paper introduces a novel, open-source, web-based, end-user programming and simulation environment for multi-robot cells, called Assembly. The target audience of this tool includes people with little or no programming experience, both in industrial and non-industrial contexts. The focus of the paper will be on the web-based technologies and architecture supporting multi-robot simulation and dynamic toolpath planning with obstacle avoidance in multi-robot scenarios. The main features of the tool and the technologies that enable them are introduced and its applicability is evaluated on the basis of an exemplar industrial application. Software development of modern, data-driven applications still relies on tools that use interaction paradigms that have remained mostly unchanged for decades. While rich forms of interactions exist as an alternative to textual command input, they find little adoption in professional software creation. In this work, we compare graphical programming using direct manipulation to the traditional, textual way of creating data-driven applications to determine the benefits and drawbacks of each. In a between-subjects user study (N=18), we compared developing a machine learning architecture with a graphical editor to traditional code-based development. While qualitative and quantitative measures show general benefits of graphical direct manipulation, the user's subjective perception does not always match this. Participants were aware of the possible benefits of such tools but were still biased in their perception. Our findings highlight that alternative software creation tools cannot just rely on good usability but must emphasize the demands of their specific target group, e.g., user control and flexibility, if they want long-term benefits and adoption.

The traditional way of high voltage (HV) measuring has some intrinsic shortcomings. With the recent improvement in digital measuring techniques and computer, it turns to be replaced by the digital automated measuring. The Virtual Instrument (VI), which is a new technology in signal detecting, analyzing and processing, has been our main focus. This paper introduces the concept and characters of VI, its three main types and presents a PC-based VI to measure 8/20 mu s impulse current. The VI is implemented in the two ways: the popular Objected-Oriented programming language-Visual C++, and the famous graphical programming environment-LabVIEW. Signals are processed with the digital filter, smoothing window and Fast Fourier Transformation (FFT). Wave parameters can be calculated quickly and shown in the soft front panel. It can also be used to measure other high voltage waves after changed a little.

In this hands-on Studio, you'll explore Modkit [1], a new toolkit for creating tangible interfaces (e.g., bike handlebars with interactive lights and sounds). Modkit makes it possible for novices and experienced programmers/designers to bring tangibles to life by offering graphical command blocks inspired by the Scratch programming environment [2]. Modkit tools work with the Arduino [3] platform's library of code (such as C/C++) to enable users to participate in a community rich with project ideas and sample files. Modkit supports multiple representations of code - graphical command blocks can become editable text-based code to offer additional avenues for learning and sharing. The Studio welcomes members of the research, industrial, academic, maker, and I-just-want-to-have fun communities of all experience levels to participate. Paricipants will have opportunities to use Modkit in personally-meaningful ways. Participants who wish to extend Modkit tools with new functionality will have opportunities to do so. The organizers will conclude the studio with a discussion around activities, example projects, and approaches to adapting the toolkit to different settings. Participants will contribute to brainstorming about potential uses, future directions, and collaborations.

At the Project Design Center at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a concurrent design environment is under development for supporting development and analyses of space instruments and telescopes in the early, conceptual design phases. This environment is being utilized by a Team I, a multidisciplinary group of experts. Team I is providing study and proposal support. To provide the required support, the Team I concurrent design environment features effectively interconnected high-end optics, CAD, and thermal design and analysis tools. Innovative approaches for linking tools, and for transferring files between applications have been implemented. These approaches together with effective sharing of geometry between the optics, CAD, and thermal tools are already showing significant timesavings.
