In this paper we present the userinterface of a tele-robotic system, which allows CERN users to perform visual inspections and tele-manipulation tasks inside the CERN accelerator complex. This graphical user interface has been designed to be simple to use, in order to provide the operator with a comfortable system. Moreover, the userinterface is robot independent and it adapts itself to the robot configuration, in order to provide a general way for controlling any kind of robot used at CERN. Furthermore it allows the operator to choose between different kinds of input (e.g. keyboard, joypad, haptic device, etc), in order to provide the most easy human-robot interaction interface, which is a fundamental requirement for safe operations.

In this paper, we present the development of a graphical user interface for a commercially available humanoid robot to study its interaction with children. The interface has been designed to facilitate the overall operation of the robot, and ultimately improve the interaction with children. Four pilot cases are studied to investigate overall effectiveness of the developed robotic setup in interacting and educating children. Case studies included communication with children in university environment, a day nursery, a junior high school, and at the Winnipeg Children's Hospital. Children and their parents/staffs were asked to provide feedback on how they/their children felt about interacting with the robot. Responses were then translated into quantitative measures. The measures received by each group of children and parents/staffs were compared using the ANOVA test. Results failed to reject the null hypothesis of equality in means of all measures. Therefore, the feedback, provided by both groups using questionnaires, was considered very close to each other. In other words, results indicated that children and parents/staffs expressed great interest in use of the developed system, and believed that such a robot could be a helpful tool in child therapy like autism.

Usability, defined as a measure of the ease with which a system can be learned or used, is an important aspect of developing modern applications. It is crucial not only in common-use solutions such as mobile or web applications, but also in sophisticated software dedicated to specialists. Tools supporting criminal analysis are a good example of such software. The aim of the paper is to show how usability tests can influence the process of development of a specialized software. To achieve the goal the paper presents tests of a sample graph editor for link analysis provided by LINK platform-an environment supporting criminal analysis developed at AGH-UST in Krakow. The methodology of usability tests together with results and summary about modifications in userinterface are presented in corresponding chapters. Than, conclusions about influence of usability tests on development process are drawn.

Probability of determining whether the designed generation system will work efficiently has become an important concern for power system engineers. In case of predetermined failures, power system operators can make provisions for backup generation systems and prevent blackouts. Thus reliability analysis of power system is an important task. To simplify the reliability calculations, graphical user interface model has been developed. The existing methods of reliability evaluation are complicated but graphical user interface provides a pictorial view and takes system inputs from the user. Every step of calculation is displayed. This model can be useful for beginners as well as experts.

This paper introduces a MATLAB-based graphical user interface (GUI) which could help electromagnetics engineers and researchers who are interested in designing layered media for various applications. The paper begins with presenting the analysis method the program employs, continues by encountering specific considerations and techniques of implementation, and ends with providing different numerical examples. These examples show good efficiency of the program for analysis of diverse problems.

To effectively investigate the mechanical performance of microstructure-based layered composites, an object-oriented software with interactive graphical user interface has been developed. This software, named PCLab, is able to analyze the microstructure evolution and mechanical performance by both Monte Carlo (MC) simulation and the Finite Element method (FEM). The software has integrated preprocessors, solvers and postprocessors. Some examples are tested and explored the functionality of the software package. It shows that the PCLab software with a user-friendly graphicalinterface provides an efficient tool for faster material analysis, design and application. It also provides a flexible, robust platform for the future extensity in the material multi-physics research. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
