Supplementary damping controller design for SSSC to mitigate sub-synchronous resonance

This paper proposes to use gravitational search algorithm (GSA) to design a supplementary sub-synchronous damping controller for the static synchronous series compensator (SSSC) device to damp the torsional oscillations. The IEEE second benchmark model (SBM) which is a series compensated ac system is considered in this study for design and analysis purpose. The design problem is formulated as an optimization problem and GSA is employed to search for the optimal controller parameters. The dynamic performance of the system under study is evaluated at various levels of series compensation with different types of disturbances. Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) analysis and robustness analysis against operating point changes and system uncertainties are also investigated. For specific system studied in the paper, the superiority of the GSA optimization technique over genetic algorithm (GA) optimization technique is also shown by comparing the simulation results and various performance indexes. Optimal siting and sizing of rapid charging station for electric vehicles considering Bangi city road network in Malaysia

Recently, electric vehicles (EVs) have been seen as a felicitous option towards a less carbon-intensive road transport. The key issue in this system is recharging the EV batteries before they are exhausted. Thus, charging stations (CSs) should be carefully located to make sure EV users can access a CS within their driving range. Considering geographic information and traffic density, this paper proposes an optimization overture for optimal siting and sizing of a rapid CS (RCS). It aims to minimize the daily total cost (which includes the cost of substation energy loss, traveling cost of EVs to the CS, and investment, variable, and operational costs of the stations simultaneously) while maintaining system constraints. The binary gravitational search algorithm, genetic algorithm, and binary particle swarm optimization algorithm were employed to optimize the daily total cost by finding the best location and sizing of the RCS in a given metropolitan area in Malaysia. The results show that the proposed methods can find optimal locations and sizing of a RCS that can benefit EV users, CS developers, and the power grid.

Optimal energy use of the collector tube in solar power tower plant

As one of the most important parts of the solar power tower plant, the receiver plays an important role in the high-efficiency operation of the solar power tower system. Obtaining the maximum available energy in the receiver is highly desired in real-world operations. In this paper heat transfer and exergy transfer methods are used to model the energy transfer process in a collector tube. Different from common analysis methods, in order to ensure the molten salt to obtain the maximum available energy, an objective function is proposed to convert the task into a constrained optimization problem. The gravitational search (GS) algorithm is employed to search for the optimal solution of the proposed objective function. Numerical results indicate that the proposed optimization method can find the optimal operation parameters under different conditions. The heat transfer and exergy transfer characteristics along the collector tube under the optimal working condition are revealed, which quantifies the available energy along, the collector tube, as well as reveals the location of energy degradation in the tube. The research findings will provide a beneficial reference for the effective use of the solar energy. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Optimisation-based improved switching technique for static VAr compensator considering minimum source harmonic injection

A selective harmonic elimination and minimisation-based improved switching technique is proposed for static VAr compensator (SVC) considering minimum source harmonic injection without external filter. Fixed capacitor-insulated gate bipolar transistor controlled reactor (IGBTCR) is used for the proposed SVC model. The switching function of IGBTCR is optimised for minimum reactor voltage total harmonic distortion (THD) which leads to less harmonic injection to line resulting minimisation of source current THD. The best possible optimised switching angles are computed offline using gravitational search algorithm with varying modulation indices to obtain minimum reactor voltage THD. Piecewise mixed model approximation technique is used to store these switching angles as a function of modulation index in the processor memory for online application. The proposed switching significantly improves source current THD compared to conventional switching. Proper simulations as well as experimental results are presented to confirm the proposed scheme.

In this paper, a new meta-heuristic method is proposed by combining Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and gravitational search in a coherent way. The advantage of swarm intelligence and the idea of a force of attraction between two particles are employed collectively to propose an improved meta-heuristic method for constrained optimization problems. Excellent constraint handling is always required for the success of any constrained optimizer. In view of this, an improved constraint-handling method is proposed which was designed in alignment with the constitutional mechanism of the proposed algorithm. The design of the algorithm is analyzed in many ways and the theoretical convergence of the algorithm is also established in the paper. The efficiency of the proposed technique was assessed by solving a set of 24 constrained problems and 15 unconstrained problems which have been proposed in IEEE-CEC sessions 2006 and 2015, respectively. The results are compared with 11 state-of-the-art algorithms for constrained problems and 6 state-of-the-art algorithms for unconstrained problems. A variety of ways are considered to examine the ability of the proposed algorithm in terms of its converging ability, success, and statistical behavior. The performance of the proposed constraint-handling method is judged by analyzing its ability to produce a feasible population. It was concluded that the proposed algorithm performs efficiently with good results as a constrained optimizer. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This paper discusses the d-q model and winding function method (WFM) for modeling and a rotor field oriented control (RFOC) system for controlling a faulty three-phase induction motor (three-phase IM when one of the phases is disconnected). In the adapted scheme for controlling the faulty IM, it is necessary for the PI controller coefficients to change. For this purpose, the gravitational search algorithm (GSA) is used for tuning of PI controllers. The results show the strength and ability of the technique to improve the performance of the faulty IM control.

Intelligent control of photovoltaic system using BPSO-GSA-optimized neural network and fuzzy-based PID for maximum power point tracking

The maximum power point tracking (MPPT) technique is applied in the photovoltaic (PV) systems to achieve the maximum power from a PV panel in different atmospheric conditions and to optimize the efficiency of a panel. A proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller was used in this study for tracking the maximum power point (MPP). A fuzzy gain scheduling system with optimized rules by subtractive clustering algorithm was employed for tuning the PID controller parameters based on error and error-difference in an online mode. In addition, an Elman-type recurrent neural network (RNN) was used for inverse identification of the PV system and for estimating the solar radiation intensity to determine the MPP voltage. The optimum number of neurons in the single hidden-layer of the RNN was determined by binary particle swarm optimization algorithm. The weights of this RNN were also optimized by using a hybrid method based on the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm and gravitational search algorithm (GSA). In the proposed fitness function for optimization, both the RNN size and its convergence accuracy were considered. Thus, the algorithm for RNN optimization attempts to minimize both the structural complexity and the mean square error. Simulation results revealed superior performance of GSA in comparison with particle swarm, cuckoo, and grey wolf optimization algorithms. The performance of the proposed MPPT method was evaluated under four different ambient conditions. Our experimental results show that the proposed MPPT method is more efficient than the three competitive methods presented in recent years.

Compound feature selection and parameter optimization of ELM for fault diagnosis of rolling element bearings

This paper proposes a hybrid system named as HGSA-ELM for fault diagnosis of rolling element bearings, in which real-valued gravitational search algorithm (RGSA) is employed to optimize the input weights and bias of ELM, and the binary-valued of GSA (BGSA) is used to select important features from a compound feature set. Three types fault features, namely time and frequency features, energy features and singular value features, are extracted to compose the compound feature set by applying ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD). For fault diagnosis of a typical rolling element bearing system with 56 working condition, comparative experiments were designed to evaluate the proposed method. And results show that HGSA-ELM achieves significant high classification accuracy compared with its original version and methods in literatures. (C) 2016 ISA. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Design and implementation of type-II and type-III controller for DC-DC switched-mode boost converter by using K-factor approach and optimisation techniques

DC-DC power supplies are playing significant role in different domains of engineering applications. Some converters such as boost, buck-boost, and fly-back have a right-half-plane zero (non-minimum phase system), hence it is difficult for the PID controller to exhibit good performance with load, line variations and parametric uncertainty. In this proposed work, design and implementation of type controllers have been performed by using k-factor approach and two different optimisation techniques (gravitational search algorithm and particle swarm optimisation) for obtaining better stability and performance for a closed loop DC-DC Switched mode boost converter. The closed loop control system has been implemented in real time dSPACE platform. The comparative closed-loop performances of a boost converter with classical, optimised PID and optimised type II/type III controllers have been produced. Simulations and experimental results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of optimised controllers for the proposed converter. Design and implementation of optimised type controller for switch mode converters has not been reported earlier in any literature.

A fuzzy-based non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II for joint energy and reserves market clearing

In this paper, market clearing of joint energy and reserves auctions is framed as a multi-objective mathematical programming (MMP) to simultaneously consider the economic and security objectives. Social welfare maximization, the minimization of lines overload and voltage deviation as well as loadability limit maximization are competitive objectives of the proposed market clearing framework. Traditional MMP methods such as direction scalarization and e-constraint methods scalarize the objective vector into a single objective. Those cases are time-consuming and require a number of runs equal to the number of desired efficient solutions. In this paper, a fuzzy-based non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II (NSGA-II) is proposed to find the optimal schedule of the units energy and reserves. In the proposed method, to improve the performance of NSGA-II, a fuzzy inference system is employed to dynamically set the parameters of NSGA-II (P-c and P-m). Results of testing the proposed multi-objective market clearing method on the IEEE 24-bus Reliability Test System (IEEE 24-bus RTS) are presented and compared with the direction scalarization, the epsilon-constraint and weighted sum methods from efficiency, diversity and computational burden requirement points of view. These comparisons confirm the efficiency of the developed method.
