Optimal resource selection for green software development using Machine Learning

Today software development consumes a lot of natural resources which are needed to be preserved for future needs. The resources that are used in developing software are huge in numbers casting a negative impact on the environment. Hence, one needs to utilize these resources in an efficient manner in order to conserve it. Since resources are limited, there is a need for more improved software as well as an efficient software development process which consumes less energy and resources. In order to fulfill this objective, green software development (GSD) can be useful. But sometimes the cost incurred for the GSD may be too high and benefits obtained may be very less or negligible. This outcome may not be very beneficial to the developers. Therefore, this article proposes an effective approach using machine learning for cost-benefit analysis to provide optimal resource selection for GSD. This approach makes a trade-off between requirements and expenditures (cost incurred to achieve the objective based on the requirements) to provide optimal resource selection and aids in analyzing the economic feasibility for GSD.

Challenges in the development of green and sustainable software for software multisourcing vendors: Findings from a systematic literature review and industrial survey

green and sustainable software development has emerged in recent years, and vendors are constantly striving to develop software that has a less hazardous impact on the environment, economy, and human beings. However, developing green software in the context of software multisourcing is not a risk-free activity, and vendors are exposed to several challenges. The authors have conducted both a systematic literature review and an industrial survey to identify the challenges faced by multisourcing vendors in the development of green and sustainable software. The final publication sample for the systematic literature review is composed of 54 research papers. Similarly, the final sample of the industrial survey is composed of 108 relevant experts. The authors have identified a list of 14 challenges. Of these challenges/risk factors, 8 have been tagged as critical risk factors. These critical risk factors are lack of green RE practices, high power consumption, high carbon emission throughout the software development, poor software design (architectural, logical, physical, and user interface), lack of ICTs for coordination and communication, high resource requirements, lack of coding standards, and lack of green software development knowledge.

This paper reports the findings of a text analysis of the corporate sustainability reports of eleven large scale Indian software development Businesses for the period of 2012 to 2014. The results shows that there are twenty two reported components of software development sustainability namely green buildings, green energy, green factory, green data centres, green infrastructure, green initiatives, green innovation, green packaging, green portfolio, green power, green practices, green procurement, green products, green program, green rating, green solutions, green space, green team, green tech and green supply chain which are addressed in the published reports of Indian software development businesses. The reports were further analysed to infer some knowledge on how the software development companies could contribute to green environment and the possible environmental impacts of these contributions. Finally a number of generalised conclusions were derived and followed by a set of implications for best practices in green software development as the outcome of the research reported in this paper.

Designing a conceptual green process model in software development: A mixed method approach

The primary objective of this research is to propose a green process model for software development. The study employed a mixed-method approach, incorporating the interpretive paradigm in the initial stage and the positivist paradigm in the subsequent stage. The research methodology encompassed a systematic literature review, qualitative content analysis, and interviews with academic and industry experts. A conceptual model was proposed, and corresponding hypotheses were derived. The hypotheses were subsequently tested using the structural equation modeling (SEM) technique, aided by SmartPLS software. The dataset consisted of responses from 200 participants who completed the designed questionnaire. Qualitative data analysis was conducted using Maxqda2020 software. The collected data underwent both exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) for analysis purposes. The findings revealed that five key factors, namely "green readiness," "infrastructure," "methods," "tools," and "emerging trends," Exhibited a noteworthy and favorable impact on green software processes. Furthermore, the variables "tools," "infrastructure," and "emerging trends" were identified as partial mediating factors. Additionally, the dimensions of green readiness, which encompassed "governance," "strategy," "policies," "monitoring," and "stakeholders," were validated and recognized. The findings of this study provide valuable insights to organizations involved in software development, offering a holistic understanding of the importance and interrelationships among the main dimensions of green process modeling. By considering these findings, organizations can enhance their approaches to developing environmentally sustainable software. This study's main contribution is in the context of the software industry. © 2023

Impacts of software and its engineering on the carbon footprint of ICT

The energy consumption of information and communication technology (ICT) is still increasing. Even though several solutions regarding the hardware side of green IT exist, the software contribution to green IT is not well investigated. The carbon footprint is one way to rate the environmental impacts of ICT. In order to get an impression of the induced CO2 emissions of software, we will present a calculation method for the carbon footprint of a software product over its life cycle. We also offer an approach on how to integrate some aspects of carbon footprint calculation into software development processes and discuss impacts and tools regarding this calculation method. We thus show the relevance of energy measurements and the attention to impacts on the carbon footprint by software within green software Engineering. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inn All rights reserved.

green software development (GSD) is an area in the software Engineering field that studies the contribution of software to global warming and seeks solutions to the climate crisis. Despite the great number of research discussing GSD, most students and professionals in the software engineering field are not aware of the existence of this area, even though some of them are interested in climate change. In this context, the greenGame (GG) was created to present to software engineering students the GSD area. GG is a board game representing a world map. The players are CEOs of multinational companies who need to invest in activities around the world. The game's goal is to decrease the global temperature, however, players must be careful as some activities can actually increase it. If the temperature increases by 4 degrees C, the game is over for everyone. If the temperature decreases and reaches 0 degrees C, the richest player wins. We developed the game in two iterations of development and assessment. We improved the game based on the feedback we received, however in both assessments, we also got positive feedback. As future work, we want to produce a digital version of the game.

The environmental footprint of a software service development may be impacted by several factors, spanning human factors to infrastructure choices. To the best of our knowledge, the state of the art in the domain of environmental footprint fails i) to address the full spectrum of software services life cycle, from design to operation and maintenance and ii) to cover different categories of impacts. In this paper, we therefore introduce a methodology and the associated model to guide the software development ecosystem and their stakeholders in estimating the environmental footprint of their projects along multiple impact categories. This holistic approach delivers actionable insights to identify potential shifting between phases, such as development and usage, but also hotspots among resources consumed to produce and operate software services. We report on a sample case study that emphasizes the importance of development impact on a software life cycle and shows the relative importance of phases, as well as resources consumed.

Why Don’t software Companies Care About software Energy Efficiency? A Survey of software Industry Developers.

The widespread use of the software is responsible for the increasing energy consumption of the world’s IT infrastructure. Many techniques, methods, and practices can reduce software’s energy consumption, but software producers do not use them. This paper aims to answer the question of why software developers do not care about energy consumption. In order to answer this question, we distinguished five research objectives and drew up a questionnaire consisting of 13 questions. We then conducted telephone interviews with 22 people from the software industry. We showed that developers need a higher awareness of the problem and more knowledge of proven ways to manage software energy efficiency. The author suggests introducing energy efficiency standards and green energy certificates for applications. Courses in energy-efficient software development at universities help prepare staff for the sustainable software development of the future.
