grid programming: some indications where we are headed

grid computing enables the development of large scientific applications on an unprecedented scale. grid-aware applications, also called meta-applications or multi-disciplinary applications, make use of coupled computational resources that are not available at a single site. In this light, the grids let scientists solve larger or new problems by pooling together resources that could not be coupled easily before. It is well known that the programmer's productivity in designing and implementing efficient distributed/parallel applications on high-performance computers is still usually a very time-consuming task. grid computing makes the situation worse. Consequently, the development of grid programming environments that would enable programmers to efficiently exploit this technology is an important and hot research issue. After an introduction on the main grid programming issues, this paper will review the most important approaches/projects conducted in this field worldwide. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Wireless network signal monitoring based on LAN packet capture and protocol analysis on grid programming

As a kind of network technology with super wide coverage and obvious transmission rate advantage, wireless network has become the most widely used network technology in people's daily life. However, when information is transmitted and exchanged in wireless networks, information blocking often occurs, which restrains the transmission rate. Therefore, the signal monitoring technology in wireless network is of great practical significance. This paper will focus on the breakthrough of wireless WLAN packet capture and protocol analysis technology in computer communication technology, and use the grid programming method to analyze the implementation process of the whole system function module. Based on this technology, a wireless network detection system is developed in VC + + 7 environment, and the algorithm flow chart is given. Finally, the system designed in this paper will be tested on Linux platform. The experimental results show that the wireless network signal monitoring technology proposed in this paper can monitor the operation of wireless network in real time. The corresponding detection accuracy error is controlled at about 1%, and the corresponding detection accuracy can reach about 60% in different signal background.

Despite the fact that grid computing is the main theme of distributed computing research during the last few years, programming on the grid is still a huge difficulty to normal users. The POP-C++ programming system has been built to provide grid programming facilities which greatly ease the development and the deployment of parallel applications on the grid. The original parallel object model used in POP-C++ is a combination of powerful features of object-oriented programming and of high-level distributed programming capabilities. The model is based on the simple idea that objects are suitable structures to encapsulate and to distribute heterogeneous data and computing elements over the grid. Programmers can guide the resource allocation for each object through the high-level resource descriptions. The object creation process, supported by the POP-C++ runtime system, is transparent to programmers. Both inter-object and intra-object parallelism are supported through various method invocation semantics. The POP-C++ programming language extends C++ to support the parallel object model with just a few new keywords. In this paper, we present the grid programming aspects of POP-C++. With POP-C++, writing a grid-enabled application becomes as simple as writing a sequential C++ application. (C) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Experiences on grid shared data programming

Despite the continuous advances of the last years in grid computing, programming paradigms are dominated by the message passing concept. There is little support for other paradigms such as shared data or associative programming. In this paper, we analyse why previous attempts did not have a significant impact in the grid computing community. We start by assessing the landscape of grid programming solutions with a focus on shared data concepts. Next, we introduce an original idea to attack shared data programming on the grid by making use of both relaxed consistency models and user specified type consistency in an object-oriented model. Last but not least, we present a prototype architecture together with experimental results.

The grid Application Toolkit:: Toward generic and easy application programming interfaces for the grid

Core grid technologies are rapidly maturing, but there remains a shortage of real grid applications. One important reason is the lack of a simple and high-level application programming toolkit, bridging the gap between existing grid middleware and application-level needs. The grid Application Toolkit (GAT), as currently developed by the EC-funded project gridLab [1], provides this missing,functionality. As seen from the application, the GAT provides a unified simple programming interface to the grid infrastructure, tailored to the needs of grid application programmers and users. A uniform programming interface will be needed for application developers to create a new generation of "grid-aware" applications. The GAT implementation handles both the complexity and the variety of existing grid middleware services via so-called adaptors. Complementing existing grid middleware, gridLab also provides high-level services to implement the GAT functionality We present the gridLab software architecture, consisting of the GAT environment-specific adaptors, and gridLab services. We elaborate the concepts underlying the GAT and outline the corresponding application programming interface. We present the functionality of gridLab's high-level set-vices and demonstrate how a dynamic grid application can easily benefit from the GAT All gridLab software is open source and can be downloaded from the project Web site.

The grid computing plaform which has emerged recently, while robust and feature-rich, is still considerably complex to program for. Not only the migration of legacy applications is difficult - even the development of a new, complex application from the beginning could be quite a challenge using today's grid middleware. This work proposes a new approach to grid programming. The presented solution called gridSpace, based on the component programming methodology and Semantic grid initiative achievements, employs decomposition, dynamic organization and semantic comparison techniques in order to provide a new, abstract layer for programmers of grid applications.

Automatic composition of workflows from Web and grid services is an important challenge in today's distributed applications. The system presented in this paper supports the user in composing an application workflow from existing grid services. The flow composition system builds workflows on an abstract level with semantic and syntactic descriptions of services available on the grid. Two main modules of the system are the flow composer and the distributed grid service registry. We present motivation, the concept of the overall system architecture and the results of a feasibility study. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Data mining algorithms are widely used today for the analysis of large corporate and scientific datasets stored in databases and data archives. Industry, science, and commerce fields often need to analyze very large datasets maintained over geographically distributed sites by using the computational power of distributed and parallel systems. The grid can play a significant role in providing an effective computational support for distributed knowledge discovery applications. For the development of data mining applications on grids we designed a system called KNOWLEDGE grid. This paper describes the KNOWLEDGE grid framework and presents the toolset provided by the KNOWLEDGE grid for implementing distributed knowledge discovery. The paper discusses how to design and implement data mining applications by using the KNOWLEDGE grid tools starting from searching grid resources, composing software and data components, and executing the resulting data mining process on a grid. Some performance results are also discussed.

grid protocols and technologies are being adopted in a wide variety of academic, government, and industrial environments, and a growing body of research-oriented literature in grid computing is being compiled. However, there is a need for educational material that is suitable for classroom use. This paper describes topics, exercises, and experiences of teaching grid computing at two different universities. Course material in grid computing can be grouped into several knowledge areas. The focus in this paper is on grid programming, i.e., developing grid-enabled services using the Globus toolkit. Assessment data shows that with preparatory material and hands-on exercises, undergraduate computer science students can master grid programming. Topics and exercises for security, network programming, Web services, and grid programming are described. Recommendations include using stand-alone containers on individual student computers and following a first grid programming exercise that builds confidence with at least one more elaborate grid programming exercise.

GEL: grid execution language

We consider the problem of programming parallel applications for a grid environment, in the presence of the two main challenges (i) high-latency communications and (ii) heterogeneity. We describe a new scripting language, GEL, whose semantics have been designed for execution on a heterogeneous, distributed computer. The language provides syntactic constructs for while loops, conditionals and explicitly parallel execution. The language is designed to work well given these two challenges, and to allow succinct representation of parallel programs, resulting in easier-to-maintain code. The programs can use legacy applications without re-engineering, and do not explicitly refer to resource names or use middleware-specific references. This middleware-independence allows us to execute the same script on an SMP machine, cluster or grid. We describe three example applications written in GEL: an optimisation problem solved using a swarm algorithm;an allergenicity prediction pipeline;and transcript analysis for tissue-specific gene expression. We have run these scripts unchanged on an SNIP machine, on PBS, SGE and LSF clusters, and on a Globus-based grid. (c) 2005 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
