Petri net based grid workflow verification and optimization

Graphical workflow modeling tools, such as UML and DAG, can facilitate users to express workflow process logic, but lack of abilities to carry out simulation and correctness checking. In this paper, based on Petri net, we propose a service composition oriented grid workflow model and its related six elementary workflow patterns: sequence, condition, iteration, concurrency, synchronization, and triggering. In addition, we present our grid workflow analysis approaches on three aspects: workflow reachability verification, workflow deadlock verification, and workflow optimization. The experimental results show that our workflow verification and optimization mechanisms are feasible and efficient.

Based on OGSA, grid workflow may construct new value-added services by composing existing elementary services with sophisticated workflow logic. Due to the highly heterogeneous and dynamic features of grid, Quality of Service (QoS) becomes essential and poses great challenges to grid workflow. This paper presents a QoS-based hybrid service-oriented grid workflow system called ServiceFlow, which enables the construction of QoS-aware workflow at both abstract and concrete service levels. To gather and delegate multiple concrete physical services providing equivalent functionality but diverse QoS capabilities, virtual service is proposed to participate in service composition. In addition, two phases of service selection, namely pre-matching phase and QoS-based service selection phase, are designed for dynamic service bindings at runtime. Performance evaluation results indicate that ServiceFlow can improve different QoS metrics to fulfill the user's requirements.

A peer-to-peer-based multi-agent framework for decentralized grid workflow management in collaborative design

Identifying the shortcomings of traditional centralized workflow architecture, this paper describes a preliminary attempt at using a peer-to-peer (P2P)-based multi-agent framework for decentralized grid workflow management in semantic grid enabled collaborative design. A decentralized, scalable semantic service registry is laid out in the P2P network for semantic discovery of distributed, heterogeneous grid services with multi-agent support. The service-oriented, decentralized problem solving strategy for grid workflow construction makes it possible for the decentralized peer agents to utilize the formal semantics to interact and cooperate with each other to support the users in constructing the grid workflow of a complex engineering design process from widely dispersed multidisciplinary design resources effectively. A prototype system is built and validated with an illustrative example from metal stamping industry to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed approach.

grid workflow scheduling, a very important system function in current grid Systems, is known as a NP complete problem. In this paper, we propose a new scheduling method-"temporal decomposition" - which divides a whole grid workflow into some sub-workflows. By dividing a large problem (workflow) into some smaller problems (sub-workflows), the "temporal decomposition" to better exploit achieves much lower computation complexity. Another motivation for the design of "temporal decomposition" is at the availability of the highly dynamic grid resources. We further propose an efficient scheduling algorithm for scheduling sub-workflows in this paper. Numerical simulation results show that our proposed scheme is more efficient in comparison with a well known existing grid workflow scheduling method.

grid workflow may construct new value-added services by composing existing elementary services with sophisticated workflow logic. grid workflow schedule requires sophisticated expertise of domain in order to automate the process of managing workflows and its components. Quality of service (QoS) becomes essential and poses great challenges to grid workflow. QoS-aware selection and execution of grid workflow can fulfil customer's expectations. A fuzzy strategy modelling approach is proposed to design the grid workflow schedule, which is inspired by the characteristics of emergence and self-evolution in biological immune system. The grid workflow matching relation is achieved by bio-entities (mobile agents) negotiation based on projection-join closure to capture such message situations. We propose a fuzzy preferences evolutionary algorithm to resolve the QoS-aware selection optimisation, which enables the construction of QoS-aware workflow at both abstract and concrete service levels. The simulation results show that the approach can significantly improve performance. It adapts well to the changes of environments.

A scheduling algorithm for grid workflow using bottleneck detection and load balancing

Purpose - This paper aims to propose a scheduling technique for parameter sweep workflows, which are used in parametric study and optimization. When executed in multiple parallel instances in the grid environment, it is necessary to address bottleneck and load balancing to achieve an efficient execution. Design/methodology/approach - A bottleneck detection approach is based on commonly known performance metrics of grid resources. To address load balancing, a resource requirement similarity metric is introduced to determine the likelihood of the distribution of tasks across available grid resources, which is referred to as an execution context. The presence of a bottleneck and the execution context are used in the main algorithm, named ABeC, to schedule tasks selectively at run-time to achieve a better overall execution time or makespan. Findings - According to the results of the simulations against four existing algorithms using several scenarios, the proposed technique performs, at least, similarly to the existing four algorithms in most cases and achieves better performance when scheduling workflows have a parallel structure. Originality/value - The bottleneck detection and the load balancing proposed in this paper require only common resource and task information, rendering it applicable to most workflow systems. The proposed scheduling technique, through such selective behaviour, may help reduce the time required for the execution of multiple instances of a grid workflow that is to be executed in parallel.

grid computing has now become the de facto standard for distributed computing and provides huge computing resources for high-performance scientific and engineering applications. Recent advantages of virtual computing technologies make it possible to efficiently employ computing resources on-demand. Distributed virtual machines (VMs) can help to build scalable, manageable and efficient grid infrastructures. This paper is engaged to organize compact muon solenoid applications in virtual data system workflows and execute them on VMs in computational grids. The work is implemented on VMware VMs. Test results are discussed and the performance is evaluated with comparison of related work. Copyright (c) 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

With the increasingly severe global market competition, the nature of enterprise competition has changed from competition among enterprises into the competition among supply chains. Lowering operating costs of the supply chain and responding to market quickly have become the main objectives of the supply chain management (SCM). The emerging grid workflow technology which can integrate heterogeneous resources very well provides a good technical basis for the improvement of supply chain performance. In this paper, we point out current problems of the supply chain and the key technology to solve these problems after introducing the theoretical background of the grid workflow and the supply chain. And then a Supply Chain System based on grid workflow (SCSGW) is proposed, of which decision-making algorithm and scheduling mechanism is analyzed. Finally, the operating process of SCSGW is clarified through the implementation of SCSGW.

The service oriented grid workflow has been a research focus in grid technology. As an NP complete problem, grid service scheduling is difficult to solve by means of classic algorithms This paper presents an algorithm HPSOA (hybrid particle swarm optimization Algorithm) to resolve dynamic Web services selection with QoS global optimal in grid workflow. The essence of the algorithm is that the problem of dynamic Web Service selection with QoS global optimal is transformed into a multi-objective services composition optimization with QoS constraints. The operations of the cross and mutation in genetic algorithm are brought into PSOA (particle swarm optimization Algorithm) to form a mix algorithm, which called HPSOA solve the QoS global optimal problem. Theoretical analysis and experimental results indicate the feasibility and efficiency of the algorithm.
