Model-based design is widely accepted in developing parallel program. Stream model, an emerging model-based programming method, shows surprisingly good efficiency in many compute-intensive domains, especially for complex media processing. On the basis, this paper illustrates how to map the stream h.264 encoder onto concrete parallel processors such as stream processor. Results show that our encoder achieves significant speedup over the original X264 encoder on various programmable architectures.

Low-power context-based adaptive binary arithmetic encoder using an embedded cache

h.264/AVC achieves a higher compression ratio than previous standards. however, this standard is also more complex because of the use of methods such as context-based adaptive binary arithmetic coding (CABAC). The high computational complexity of CABAC results in large power consumption. This study presents a systematic analysis for designing a low-power architecture which includes an embedded cache. The analysis provides the mapping scheme between the cache and the main memory where the contexts are stored. The observations for the proposed scheme are based on the statistical correlation between neighbouring blocks for h. 264 coding. The proposed scheme allows the context access operations to hit frequently in the cache, significantly reducing the power consumption. The proposed architecture lowers power consumption by up to 50% compared to designs without embedded cache. An efficient bit-packing method of output bitstream that can be implemented by pipeline structure for high encoding data throughput is also proposed. The throughput of the proposed design is up to 200 Mbins per second for h. 264 main profile.

Detection and measurement of the blocking artifact in decoded video frames

A method for measuring the blocking artifact in video frames is presented, which is capable of detecting this artifact even outside a regular geometric structure, that is, on moving objects in frames encoded with prediction-based techniques. Information-theoretic measures are integrated with models of the human perception, to account for the visibility of the artifact on different image content. A final metric is produced that yields coherent values on variously degraded versions derived from different originals. No information is required on the encoding procedure that originated the artifact;this makes this method suitable to operate on the decoded version of the frames, at the final stage of the video processing chain. Experiments show that the metric has a good correlation with subjective scores and possesses some additional desirable properties.

Mobile video surveillance represents a new paradigm that encompasses, on the one side, ubiquitous video acquisition and, on the other side, ubiquitous video processing and viewing, addressing both computer-based and human-based surveillance. To this aim, systems must provide efficient video streaming with low latency and low frame skipping, even over limited bandwidth networks. This work presents MoSES (MObile Streaming for vidEo Surveillance), an effective system for mobile video surveillance for both PC and PDA clients;it relies over h.264/AVC video coding and GPRS/EDGE-GPRS network. Adaptive control algorithms are employed to achieve the best tradeoff between low latency and good video fluidity. MoSES provides a good-quality video streaming that is used as input to computer-based video surveillance applications for people segmentation and tracking. In this paper new and general-purpose methodologies for streaming performance evaluation are also proposed and used to compare MoSES with existing solutions in terms of different parameters (latency, image quality, video fluidity, and frame losses), as well as in terms of performance in people segmentation and tracking.

An ROI Privacy Protection Scheme for h.264 Video Based on FMO and Chaos

With the increase of terrorist and criminal activities, closed circuit television (CCTV) is widely used on many occasions. however, abuse of surveillance video may result in the leakage of personal privacy. To protect the privacy in the video of CCTV, an encryption scheme for region of interest (ROI) of h.264 video based on flexible macroblock ordering (FMO) and chaos is proposed in this paper, where human face regions are selected as an example of ROI. First, the human face regions in the video are detected and extracted. Then, they are mapped into slice groups by using FMO technology in h.264. After that, these regions are encrypted using selective video encryption based on chaos. Experimental results and analysis show that the proposed scheme can effectively protect the private information of h.264 video and, therefore, can strike a good balance among the security, encryption efficiency, and coding performance. It has great potential to be used in the privacy protection of the video of CCTV.

Various video compressed coding standards have been established with some differences broughtby buildersfollowing the requirements on the data of voice and image, and developed continuously subject to people's demand of people. Now, video compressed coding research divides into two main directions: one is that DCT hybrid coding scheme based on tradition;the other is the coding scheme built from the objects put forward based on the 2nd generation image coding technology. The object-based coding method can actualize both the function that enlarges image data compression ratios and the man-machine interaction, giving our projection of the future video compressed coding development direction. In this paper, the object-based coding model selection algorithm is studied, and using the concepts of video object in MPEG-4, the method of splitting video is given.

Transmission errors in 3GPP/3GPP2 wireless IP networks call for more error resilience in video compression streams. With the features of highly improved coding efficiency and the seamless and flexible integration into variety network architectures, h.264/AVC has been a challenging source coder for 3GPP wireless IP applications. Yet h.264 video streams are still vulnerable to transmission disturbances. In this paper, a set of error concealment techniques are proposed to provide error resilience, including an algorithm of refined directional weighted spatial interpolation, a method of subblock-based refined motion compensated temporal concealment with weighting boundary match constrain, and an adaptive INTRA/INTER case estimation method to combine the above algorithms. The refined concealment schemes show advantages in error robustness over wireless IP network compared to those suggested in h.264 without any encoder-side modifications(1).
