Advanced pilot design procedure based on hs algorithm for OFDM-IDMA system

The direct effect of the pilot positions to the channel estimation performance gives an opportunity for minimising the estimation errors in multicarrier transmission technologies. To this end, harmony search (hs) algorithm is proposed for optimising the pilot distribution pattern in order to increase the performance of least squares estimator employed in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing-interleave division multiple access (OFDM-IDMA) system. Besides, the upper bound of mean square error (MSE) utilised as the fitness function of hs algorithm is obtained by using Gershgorin disc theorem to get rid of matrix inversion process required in MSE calculation. In the simulations, the authors' proposed hs-based pilot optimisation technique proves to be an effective way of pilot design for OFDM-IDMA system by providing a clear performance superiority over the other considered pilot placement strategies.

In micro aircraft design and testing, as well as motor and rotational motion monitoring, it will need to achieve a non-contact detection for rotational motion. hs (Horn & Schunck) algorithm is deduced under the premise that adjacent image intervals and the little change of image gray. hs algorithm is an optical flow calculation method that based on the image in the global smooth constraint. This paper propose an indicator that is used to characterize the optical flow field, and analyze the feasibility of the hs algorithm for the rotational motion measurement.

This paper proposes the methods to improve the Monte Carlo (MCL) algorithm for the wireless mobile node localization. It combines the anchor boxes constructed by different power signals with the node location information in the previous time to reduce the sampling region. Through sampling and filtering in this region, we adopt the Harmony Search (hs) algorithm to optimize the obtained samples and then calculate the estimated value of the node location. Moreover, the RSSI ranging is used to assist localization. And it takes full advantage of the nodes information with high availabilities. The simulation results show that the improved algorithm reduces the requirements of anchors density and improves the sampling filter efficiencies and the localization accuracy.

Considering that the invasive weed optimization (IWO) algorithm and the harmony search (hs) algorithm are inclined to fall into local optima with low convergence precision when they are used to deal with complex function optimization problems, this paper proposes a hybrid algorithm, hs-IWO algorithm, which is combined hs algorithm and IWO algorithm. We introduce strategies such as fixing the number of seeds, reinitializing limit solutions, multi-individual global hs, parameter optimization, etc. In order to make the two algorithms take advantage of their merits, they are mixed organically in this paper. Through tests on some complex functions of benchmark, the experimental results display that the hs-IWO algorithm has the efficiency and robustness of the algorithms. It is an optimization algorithm that is highly effective and stable, especially to be applied to the optimization of complicated functions compared with other intelligent optimization algorithms.

The present paper proposes systematic designs of stable adaptive fuzzy logic controllers (AFLCs), employing hybridizations of Lyapunov strategy based approach (LSBA) and a contemporary stochastic optimization technique, for controlling the temperature of a thermal process in an air-heater system with transport-delay and in the presence of disturbances. Harmony search (hs) algorithm has been considered here as a candidate stochastic optimization technique utilized in conjunction with the Lyapunov theory to develop the hybrid models in this work. The objective of this work is to design stable adaptive fuzzy controllers which can provide high degree of automation, guarantee asymptotic stability and also achieve satisfactory transient performance by simultaneous adaptations of both the fuzzy controller structure and its free parameters. The results obtained from real-life experiments aptly demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed approach. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Hybrid evolutionary search method for complex function optimisation problems

In this Letter, harmony search (hs) technique hybridised with genetic algorithm (GA) is proposed. This technique mainly takes hs direction estimation mechanism and genetic operators in GA, which significantly increase the convergence of the hs algorithm. Specifically, the authors propose to incorporate main operators of GA into the hs algorithm to avoid some inherent drawbacks of the hs. For example, crossover is incorporated into hs to deal with low accuracy problem, while mutation is incorporated to escape from the local optimum solutions. In addition, elitism is introduced into the hs, to precipitate the performance and prevent the loss of favourable individuals found during the search process. The authors compare the performance of the GA, hs, and other popular hs variants on several benchmark functions. Numerical results show that the proposed hybridisation exhibits a superior performance in comparison to other algorithms.

In this paper, the optimal sizing and locating of capacitor banks in a 15-bus standard distribution network with harmonic effects consideration has been studied. The goal was finding the size and location of capacitor banks with power loss reduction approach and voltage stability improvement in the network. Considered constraints in optimization are capacity of capacitor banks, voltage limitation, and total harmonic distortion (THD) limit. Due to the nonlinear nature of the capacitor placement problems in the distribution network, non-linear methods should be used. Thus, the Harmony Search algorithm (hs) has been used to achieve this goal. In simulations, first, by using the Power Loss Index (PLI) on the buses, locations of the banks were determined and then, using the hs algorithm, the appropriate capacities of the banks are calculated. Two scenarios are studied in this paper. In first scenario, it is assumed that there is no harmonic in the network, and in the second scenario, studies are conducted in the presence of harmonic loads. The results indicate that considering harmonics in the capacitor placement problem will have a noticeable influence on the network characteristics, hence it must be considered in studies.

Considering that invasive weed optimization (IWO) algorithm and the harmony search (hs) algorithm easily plunge into local optimal solution with low computing precision when they are applied to solve complex function problems, this paper improves the IWO algorithm and the hs algorithm. We introduce some strategies such as fixing the number of seeds, reinitializing boundary solutions, multi-individual global hs, and parameter optimization, etc. In order to make full use of the advantages of two algorithms, they are mixed in this paper, whereby the IWO algorithm based on hs is put forward, which is called hs-IWO for short. Through tests on 10 complex functions, the experimental results verify the accuracy, efficiency and stabilization of the hs-IWO algorithm.

A new algorithm for learning principal curves with explicit formulation is proposed on the basis of artificial neural network (ANN). The algorithm successfully turns an unsupervised learning problem into a supervised one by projecting a data set to the polygonal line learned by existing algorithms of principal curves and identifying the relation between the data points and their corresponding projection indices with ANN. Convergence properties of this learning scheme are analyzed and a practical version of this theoretical algorithm is implemented. Simulation results demonstrate that the new algorithm compares favorably with previous methods for its convenience in applications.

GMS (Generator Maintenance Scheduling) ranks very high in decision making of power generation management. Generators maintenance schedule decides the time period of maintenance tasks and a reliable reserve margin is also maintained during this time period. In this paper, a comparison of GA (Genetic algorithm) and hs (Harmony Search) algorithm is presented to solve generators maintenance scheduling problem for WAPDA (Water And Power Development Authority) Pakistan. GA is a search procedure, which is used in search problems to compute exact and optimized solution. GA is considered as global search heuristic technique. hs algorithm is quite efficient, because the convergence rate of this algorithm is very fast. hs algorithm is based on the concept of music improvisation process of searching for a perfect state of harmony. The two algorithms generate feasible and optimal solutions and overcome the limitations of the conventional methods including extensive computational effort, which increases exponentially as the size of the problem increases. The proposed methods are tested, validated and compared on the WAPDA electric system.
