WebSiteGen: Web-based database application generator

We can easily access a remote database as well as a local database with html forms. Although implementing a database application with html forms is much simpler than implementing it with a proprietary graphical user-interface system, html forms and CGI programs still must be coded. We implemented a software tool that automatically generates the SQL statements that create a database for an application, the forms that are used as a user interface, and the Java servlets that retrieve the data requested through the forms. The database tables to be created and the forms to be generated are determined by the class diagram for the application. Our software tool, which we call WebSiteGen, thus simplifies the implementation of a Web-based database application.

Despite the recent uprising of the Web Services technology for programmatic interfaces of business-to-business (13213) E-commerce services (e-services) over the Internet, most existing sites can only support human interactions with Hypertext Markup Language (html) through web browsers. Automating third-party client access into Web Services generally requires developing sophisticated programs to simulate human access by handling html pages. However, these html interfaces vary across web sites, and are often subject to changes. Client maintenance is therefore tedious and expensive. Even for the site owner, it may still require much effort in redeveloping the underlying presentation and application logics. This motivates our study for the requirement and the formulation of a conceptual model for such automation. Based on the requirement, we develop a novel approach to automating dialogs with web-based services (particularly for crossorganizational processes), using a high-level script language, called WebXcript language. The language provides features for html forms-based dialogues and eXtended Markup Language (XML) messaging. The XML syntax of WebXcript further enables convenient user authoring and easy engine development with extensively available XML tools. It supports expected responses and exception handling. We further propose a wrapper architecture based on WebXcript to integrate legacy sites into Web Services, where Web Service Definition Language (WSDL) interfaces are generated from high-level mappings from database or WebXcript parameter definitions. We demonstrate the applicability of our approach with examples in integrating distributed information, online ordering, and XML messaging, together with discussions on our experiences and the advantages of our approach.

Advantages and disadvantages of Web and lab research are reviewed. Via the World Wide Web, one can efficiently recruit large, heterogeneous samples quickly, recruit specialized samples (people with rare characteristics), and standardize procedures, making studies easy to replicate. Alternative programming techniques (procedures for data collection) are compared, including client-side as opposed to server-side programming. Web studies have methodological problems;for example, higher rates of drop out and of repeated participation. Web studies must be thoroughly analyzed and tested before launching on-line. Many studies compared data obtained in Web versus lab. These two methods usually reach the same conclusions;however, there are significant differences between college students tested in the lab and people recruited and tested via the Internet. Reasons that Web researchers are enthusiastic about the potential of the new methods are discussed.

html forms are the predominant interface between users and web applications. Many of these applications display a sequence of multiple forms on separate pages, for instance to book a flight or order a DVD. We introduce a method to wrap these multi-stepped forms and offer their individual functionality as a single consolidated Web Service. This Web Service in turn maps input data to the individual forms in the correct order. Such consolidation better enables operation of the forms by applications and provides a simpler interface for human users. To this end we analyze the html code and sample user interaction of each page and infer the internal model of the application. A particular challenge is to map semantically same fields across multiple forms and choose meaningful labels for them. Web Service output is parsed from the resulting html page. Experiments on different multi-stepped web forms show the feasibility and usefulness of our approach.

Tato práce se zaobírá tvorbou tiskového serveru pro vytváření PDF dokumentů. Výsledkem práce je řešení, které na základě vybrané a vyplněné šablony vytváří PDF dokument. Vybrání šablony, vyplnění šablony a samotná žádost o vygenerování PDF dokumentu probíhá přes webové rozhraní. Obsluhu jednotlivých požadavků zabezpečuje aplikační server. Data pro šablony jsou uloženy v databázi Caché. Tiskový server se vytváří za účelem usnadnění práce uživatelů při vytváření PDF dokumentů.
