In the industrial sector, steel wire ropes (SWR) are crucial for traction. Early damage such as wear can lead to further loss of metallic cross-sectional area (LMA) of SWR. In existing studies, LMA-type defects are mainly measured using PCB coils, which sense the overall change of magnetic flux will ignore the information of the circumferential distribution of magnetic flux, resulting in insufficient detection accuracy. To address these issues, this paper utilizes spatial information from hall sensors and an improved CNN network to extract LMArelated cross-sectional loss characteristics. This approach enhances the utilization of the circumferential information obtained by hall sensors and achieves excellent quantitative detection results. Experimental validation shows that even under complex conditions, the average error rate for LMA detection is below 0.1%. Therefore, this paper proposes a highaccuracy and noise-resistant LMA detection method based on hall sensors. © 2024 IEEE.

A moisture separator reheater (MSR) system is installed between the high-pressure and low-pressure steam turbines in a nuclear power plant to increase the heat efficiency of the power plant. Erosion and corrosion of the MSR tubes have threatened the long-term operation of nuclear power plants. Thus a partial saturation eddy current testing (PSECT) method using a bobbin-type integrated hall sensor array (BIHaS) was proposed in our previous study and it showed good results compared with a conventional PSECT. This paper presents a novel signal processing technique to improve detectability and measurability of electromagnetic testing method using a BIHaS through mitigating the inherent vibration signal noise between the BIHaS and ferritic stainless steel tubes.

This paper presents a nondestructive testing system for inspecting the moisture separator reheater (MSR) tubing system in a nuclear power plant. The technique is based on partial saturation eddy current testing in which a hall sensor array is used to measure the radial component of the electromagnetic field distributed in the tubes. A finned MRS tube of ferritic stainless steel (SS439) with artificial, flat-bottom hole-type defects was used in the experiments. The results show that the proposed system has potential applications in the MSR system or ferromagnetic material tubes in general, which could detect the artificial defects of about 20% of the wall thickness (0.24 mm). Furthermore, the defect volume could be quantitatively evaluated.

Nondestructive Testing of Heat Exchanger Tubes in Balance of Plant using Bobbin Coil and Bobbin-Type Integrated hall sensor array

In this paper, a nondestructive testing system is proposed for inspecting heat exchanger tubes in the balance of plant of a nuclear power plant. A bobbin coil was used to excite an alternating electromagnetic field in heat exchanger tubes, and a bobbin-type integrated hall sensor array (BIHaS) was used to measure the magnetic flux density distribution around discontinuities. The BIHaS was fabricated by arraying 30 hall sensor elements around the circumference of a probe. The system performance was verified by experiments conducted on three 304 stainless steel tubes with artificial circumferential groove, wear scar, axial/circumferential simulated crack, and flat bottom hole discontinuities on the outer diameter surface. The proposed system showed potential for accurate detection and classification of discontinuity types. Furthermore, the discontinuity volume could be estimated.

Robust Current Sensing in Rectangular Conductors: Elliptical hall-Effect sensor array Optimized via Bio-Inspired GWO-BP Neural Network

Accurate current sensing in rectangular conductors is challenged by mechanical deformations, including eccentricity (X/Y-axis shifts) and inclination (Z-axis tilt), which distort magnetic field distributions and induce measurement errors. To address this, we propose a bio-inspired error compensation strategy integrating an elliptically configured hall sensor array with a hybrid Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO)-enhanced backpropagation neural network. The eccentric displacement and tilt angle of the conductor are quantified via a three-dimensional magnetic field reconstruction and current inversion modeling. A dual-stage optimization framework is implemented: first, establishing a BP neural network for real-time conductor state estimations, and second, leveraging the GWO's swarm intelligence to refine network weights and thresholds, thereby avoiding local optima and enhancing the robustness against asymmetric field patterns. The experimental validation under extreme mechanical deformations (X/Y-eccentricity: ±8 mm; Z-tilt: ±15°) demonstrates the strategy's efficacy, achieving a 65.07%, 45.74%, and 76.15% error suppression for X-, Y-, and Z-axis deviations. The elliptical configuration reduces the installation footprint by 72.4% compared with conventional circular sensor arrays while maintaining a robust suppression of eccentricity- and tilt-induced errors, proving critical for space-constrained applications, such as electric vehicle powertrains and miniaturized industrial inverters. This work bridges bio-inspired algorithms and adaptive sensing hardware, offering a systematic solution to mechanical deformation-induced errors in high-density power systems.

This paper presents an electromagnetic testing method for moisture separator reheater (MSR) tubes, which is based on partial saturation eddy current testing (PSECT). The sensor probe has a permanent magnet that is used to partially saturate the MSR tube material, a bobbin coil is used to supply an alternating electromagnetic field that penetrates into the tube, and a bobbin-type integrated hall sensor (BIHaS) array is used to measure the radial component of the electromagnetic field distribution in the tube. The BIHaS has 15 hall sensor elements arrayed at 24 degrees (2.72 mm) intervals on the circumference to make a 13.5 mm diameter sensor probe. Thus, the spatial resolution of measurement can be improved rather than using a single/differential-type sensing coil as used in conventional PSECT systems. The efficiency of PSECT over magnetic flux leakage testing and eddy current testing is presented. Furthermore, the quantitative evaluation of damage volume can be performed.

Calibration of hall sensor array for critical current measurement of YBCO tape with ferromagnetic substrate

HAS (hall sensor array) is a powerful tool to detect the uniformity of HTS (high temperature superconductor) tape through mapping the distribution of remanent or shielding field along the surface of the tape. However, measurement of HTS tape with ferromagnetic parts by HSA is still an issue because the ferromagnetic substrate has influence on the magnetic field around the HTS layer. In this work, a continuous HSA system has been designed to measure the critical current of the YBCO tape with ferromagnetic substrate. The relationship between the remanent field and critical current was calibrated by the finite element method. The result showed that the HSA is an effective method for evaluating the critical current of the HTS tape with ferromagnetic substrate. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Nondestructive testing and evaluation of aircraft are a great importance from the viewpoint of the integrity and flight safety. In aircraft structures, damage is likely to be observed around the rivets that connect the skin to the frames. This paper presents a sensor system which includes a linearly integrated solid-state hall sensor array (LIHaS). The LIHaS has 64 InSb hall sensors arrayed in 0.52 mm of interval respect to 33.28 mm length of measurement. The sensor system was tested on two flat layers of Aluminium alloy for inspecting far-side corrosions having 6 similar to 14 mm of diameter and 0.1 similar to 1.27 mm of depth.

Detection of Corrosion on Aircraft Structures Using an Electromagnetic Testing sensor and a Spiking Convolutional Neural Network

The nondestructive testing (NDT) of aircraft intake structures is an important task to ensure the safety and integrity of the aircraft. Corrosion often appears at rivet locations and at the far-side surface or at hidden layers, presenting a challenge for NDT methods. To tackle this issue, we present a spiking NDT system that includes an electromagnetic testing probe with a spiking convolutional neural network (SCNN). The magnetic image of the rivet and corrosion is captured by a high spatial resolution hall sensor array while scanning on the surface of the intake's structure. The SCNN model is developed to analyze the obtained magnetic image and detect the presence of corrosion. The SCNN model, inspired by the principles of biological neurons, utilizes discrete and asynchronous spikes, resulting in remarkable energy efficiency. Our proposed SCNN model demonstrates a remarkable detection accuracy of approximately 93.67%, surpassing the performance of both the prior support vector machine (SVM) model (89.48%) and a conventional convolutional neural network (CNN) model (92.86%) on the same dataset. Importantly, when evaluated on the mu Brain chip, our SCNN model exhibits power consumption approximately four orders of magnitude lower than that of a conventional CNN model running on an edge device (Jetson Nano). This substantial reduction in power consumption underscores the practicality and efficiency of our approach for concealed corrosion detection within aircraft intake structures, holding promises for enhanced maintenance practices in the aviation industry.

An Advanced hall Element array-Based Device for High-Resolution Magnetic Field Mapping

The precise mapping of magnetic fields emitted by various objects holds critical importance in the fabrication of industrial products. To meet this requirement, this study introduces an advanced magnetic detection device boasting high spatial resolution. The device's sensor, an array comprising 256 unpackaged gallium arsenide (GaAs) hall elements arranged in a 16 x 16 matrix, spans an effective area of 19.2 mm x 19.2 mm. The design maintains a 1.2 mm separation between adjacent elements. For enhanced resolution, the probe scans the sample via a motorized rail system capable of executing specialized movement patterns. A support structure incorporated into the probe minimizes the measurement distance to below 0.5 mm, thereby amplifying the magnetic signal and mitigating errors from nonparallel probe-sample alignment. The accompanying interactive software utilizes cubic spline interpolation to transform magnetic readings into detailed two- and three-dimensional magnetic field distribution maps, signifying field strength and polarity through variations in color intensity and amplitude sign. The device's efficacy in accurately mapping surface magnetic field distributions of magnetic and magnetized materials was corroborated through tests on three distinct samples: a neodymium-iron-boron magnet, the circular magnetic array from a smartphone, and a magnetized 430 steel plate. These tests, focused on imaging quality and magnetic field characterization, underscore the device's proficiency in nondestructive magnetic field analysis.
