This article presents a cylinder-type magnetic camera (CMC) system in nondestructive testing (NDT) of a heat exchanger (HX) tube. The CMC system is developed for the inspection of corrosion on HX tubes of nuclear power plants. The CMC probe works based on the principle of eddy current testing, in which a single-large bobbin coil is used to supply eddy current on the tube, and a matrix array of InSb hall sensor is used to measure the electromagnetic field around the corrosion. The CMC system can measure both the real and imaginary components of the magnetic field. The CMC system can operate in two modes: single-line scan mode by selecting a single-line hall sensor or area scan mode by the electrical scan. The limitations and advantages of each operation mode will be presented. The CMC system has the potential for further applications such as evaluating corrosion size, shape, and locations.

Magnetic Float Liquid Level Detection Method for High-Temperature Superconducting Flux-Pinning Maglev System

High temperature superconducting (HTS) flux-pinning maglev system uses the flux-pinning characteristics of HTS bulk to achieve self-stable levitation, but the superconductivity of HTS bulk depends on low temperature maintained by liquid nitrogen. It can be seen that the real-time detection of liquid nitrogen level is an essential safety detection in the HTS flux-pinning maglev system. However, the liquid nitrogen level measurement of Dewar is limited by many conditions, such as small available size of Dewar, small liquid nitrogen capacity, low temperature characteristics of liquid nitrogen, etc. These conditions require the liquid level detection system to be able to withstand low temperature, have sufficient identification accuracy and have no significant impact on the cold insulation performance of Dewar. All of these bring difficulties to the design of real-time liquid level detection in the maglev system. Based on the structural characteristics of Dewar, a new type of magnetic float liquid level detection device is studied in this paper. The device can realize liquid nitrogen level detection function and low-level alarm function. Its technical principle is to use hall sensor array to detect the position of the magnetic float in real time, and transmit the data to the onboard computer for data storage and data monitoring. The experimental results show that the proposed liquid nitrogen level detection method can meet the requirements of liquid nitrogen level detection and alarm with certain accuracy, and will not bring additional heat leakage to affect the Dewar performance.

Research on a Composite Voltage and Current Measurement Device for HVDC Networks

With the global trend to develop digital substation automation systems, measurement devices are required to be reliable, of small size and light weight and of acceptable accuracy in a wide frequency band. This article presents a combined high voltage direct current measurement method which comprises the above-mentioned features that makes it suitable for smart grids protection and control applications. The proposed measurement method utilizes hall sensor array for dc current measurement. DC voltage is measured using a voltage divider circuit while the harmonic currents are measured using a square Rogowski coil made of four straight bars along with a high precision digital integration algorithm. A four-spectral line interpolation fast Fourier transform algorithm based on trapezoidal convolution window is proposed to improve the extraction accuracy of the dc and harmonic components from the measured signal. Experimental results show that the error variation of the proposed method is less than 0.098% for voltage measurement while it is less than 0.104% for current measurement. The harmonic measurement ratio error is less than 0.2% and the angle error is less than 8'.

A Moving Magnetic Grid-Type Long-Range Linear Absolute Displacement sensor

In order to overcome the shortcomings of the traditional magnetic absolute linear displacement sensors in which cables affect the flexibility and measurement range in linear motor transmission systems, this paper proposes a novel cable-free moving magnetic grid-type long-range absolute displacement sensor. The sensor consists of a magnetic grid and a signal acquisition board. The magnetic grid is a moving component that contains two rows of permanent magnet arrays, one for relative displacement measurement and the other for the displacement interval code. The signal acquisition board is a fixed component that uses n groups of two-row hall sensor arrays for continuous absolute displacement measurement. The principle of the sensor using the 2D magnetic field signal for the relative displacement measurement is analyzed, and a measurement method based on hall sensor arrays for coding and absolute displacement detection over n cycles is proposed. Finally, a sensor prototype is fabricated and the experiments are performed. The experimental results show that the measurement resolution of the sensor is 5 mu m, and the measurement accuracy is +/- 14.8 mu m within the measurement range of 0-98.3 mm. The proposed sensor can realize continuous absolute displacement measurement over multiple cycles without cable binding.

Rectangular Busbar With Circular Sensing Part for Wideband Current Measurement

A simple, reliable, and novel busbar sensing configuration for frequency-independent current measurement is presented in this article. Yokeless current transducers using arrays of magnetic sensors around a rectangular busbar are linear and lightweight, but they suffer from large frequency dependence. Several circular-array-based current transducers have been described in the literature, but their frequency characteristics have never been studied in detail. We show that the magnetic field surrounding a long circular busbar is frequency-independent, regardless of the surface effect. This feature can be used to develop an accurate circular-array-based coreless hall current transducer for a wide range of frequencies. We propose a novel busbar configuration that has a 200-mm-long circular section in the current-sensing part of the busbar, which is compatible with the standard 10 x 60 mm rectangular busbar. A circular magnetic field sensor array is mounted in the midplane, around the circular conductor, for the current measurement. A finite-element method (FEM)-based 3-D analysis of the proposed busbar is performed with the help of an eddy current solver in the Ansys Maxwell tool. In addition, a prototype of the proposed wideband busbar was developed in the laboratory and its functionality was tested. The results that have been obtained show that the frequency dependence is reduced from -8.5% (for a rectangular busbar) to -0.45% (for the novel transducer).

Detection of corrosion at rivet sites in a multilayer structure of an aircraft is an essential task to ensure the flight safety of an aircraft. It is challenging to detect the corrosion due to the influence on the signal of the rivet and the multiple fastened layers in the structure. In this letter, an electromagnetic testing method is used in conjunction with principal component analysis (PCA) to detect corrosion around fasteners. Multiple hall sensors were used for efficient measurement of the magnetic field distribution at the rivet sites. The features of the scanned magnetic image were automatically extracted by the PCA in orthogonal subspaces. The proposed method shows potential results of features extraction and corrosion signal extraction for further development of electromagnetic testing systems in multilayer engineering structures.

Tactile sensors play a crucial role in developing robots with human like grasping and manipulation capabilities. Localization, dynamic sensing and good force recognition characteristics arc major goals when designing a tactile sensor. However, fulfilling these requirements come at the cost of increased complexity in design, high cost and difficulties in practical implementation due to size. In this research a sensor has been developed that is based on the concept of hall effect. An array of magnets and hall sensors create a unique combination of outputs for each different deformation of the dual layered silicon membrane which houses the magnets. While allowing the interaction with non-planar surfaces due to the compliant nature of the silicon material, the sensor also facilitates accurate force recognition and localization with super-resolution using sensor readings, geometry and elastic properties of the silicon layer. This paper contains the design, fabrication and calibration of the tactile sensor array.

Coil Positioning for Wireless Power Transfer System of Automatic Guided Vehicle Based on Magnetic Sensing

As an auxiliary function of the wireless power transfer (WPT) system, coil positioning can solve the power and efficiency degradation during power transmission caused by misalignment of the magnetic coupler. In this paper, a hall sensor array is used to measure the change of magnetic flux density. By comparing the multisensor data fusion results with the preset data obtained from the coil alignment, the real-time accurate positioning of the receiving coil can be realized. Firstly, the positioning model of the receiving coil is built and the variation of magnetic flux density with the coil misalignment is analyzed. Secondly, the arrangement of the Planar 8-direction symmetric sensor array and the positioning algorithm based on data fusion of magnetic flux density variations are proposed. In order to avoid coil positioning misalignment caused by the unstable magnetic field distribution which is actually affected by the change of mutual inductance during automatic guided vehicle (AGV) alignment, the constant current strategy of primary and secondary sides is proposed. Finally, the coil positioning experimental platform is built. The experimental results show that the coil positioning method proposed in this paper has high accuracy, and the positioning error is within 4 cm.

We present a highly configurable imaging system for magnetic fields, especially to sense transient current distributions in harsh electromagnetic environments. For example, this measurement system allows tracing transient current paths inside closed housings and arrangements, as found in switchgear. This magnetic field camera consists of a two-dimensional arrangement of approx. 1800 hall effect sensors and a field programmable gate array (FPGA) unit, which controls each single sensor. These sensors are grouped in 12 x 24 IC packages with each package comprising two cells off three hall effect sensors. Each cell can record Bx, By and Bz component of the magnetic flux density. Therefore, direction and magnitude of B-field distributions can be recorded at approx. 600 positions. On the other hand, a frame rate higher than 100 000 frames per second can be used, when reading only one field component. Special attention was paid to electromagnetic interference issues. Development and verification for switchgear diagnostics are described and measurements of actual switching are presented. Other fields of application, such as non-destructive testing, are possible due to the configurability of the sensors.

The high temperature superconducting material Bi-2212 is considered for use in the next generation of fusion reactors due to an excellent current carrying capacity in a high field. The critical current as well as its inhomogeneity are important factors in evaluating the performance of Bi-2212 wires, cables and conductors. Non-destructive evaluation by using a hall sensor array is a more effective and faster method for testing the local critical current of a high temperature superconductor compared with a conventional contact-electrical method. In this paper, the coupling and decoupling numerical models of the perpendicular component of the residual magnetic field in Bi-2212 round wire were solved. Then, the perpendicular component of the remnant magnetic field was measured by a hall sensor array, which was consistent with the results of the coupling model. Our results established the numerical model for a Bi-2212 first stage cable and found that the non-destructive method using four mutual vertical hall sensor arrays is feasible for evaluation of cable critical current properties.
