Non-destructive evaluation of critical current on a Bi-2212 first stage cable based on numerical analysis of the remnant field distributions

The high temperature superconducting material Bi-2212 is considered for use in the next generation of fusion reactors due to an excellent current carrying capacity in a high field. The critical current as well as its inhomogeneity are important factors in evaluating the performance of Bi-2212 wires, cables and conductors. Non-destructive evaluation by using a hall sensor array is a more effective and faster method for testing the local critical current of a high temperature superconductor compared with a conventional contact-electrical method. In this paper, the coupling and decoupling numerical models of the perpendicular component of the residual magnetic field in Bi-2212 round wire were solved. Then, the perpendicular component of the remnant magnetic field was measured by a hall sensor array, which was consistent with the results of the coupling model. Our results established the numerical model for a Bi-2212 first stage cable and found that the non-destructive method using four mutual vertical hall sensor arrays is feasible for evaluation of cable critical current properties.

This paper presents a sensor system for inspection of far-side defects around rivets in a multilayer structure. The sensor system includes 64 InSb hall sensors arrayed in 0.52-mm intervals, over a total length of 33.28mm. The sensor system was tested on two flat specimens, which have two layers of an aluminum alloy, with and without far-side defects around rivets. The sensor system performance was estimated via both the receiver operating characteristic and the probability of detection (POD) curves. Furthermore, a quantitative evaluation of the surface area, depth, and volume of a defect having a POD greater than 90% was carried out.

A noncontact superconducting transition temperature (T-c) measurement system using a hall probe array was devised to measure T-c of high-temperature superconductor (HTS) coated conductors (CCs) without physical contact to the surface, thereby avoiding contact with electrodes, which can cause damage to the conductor surface. The variations of the hall voltage (V) distribution, which comes from the distribution of magnetic field on the surface of the CC, under a fixed applied field at different temperatures were used to estimate T-c. The measured T-c of the HTS GdBCO CC made by SuNAM was approximately 93.2 K by the noncontact T-c method, as compared to approximately 93.5 K by the conventional four-probe-contact method in a commercial PPMS. Thus, the T-c obtained by this system is comparable with that from the transport four-probe method. In addition, the noncontact T-c measurement system devised and used in this study is simple because it does not need comparison and conversion with values measured by contact methods.

Recently, we showed that the self-field transport critical current, I-c(sf), of a superconducting wire can be defined in a more fundamental way than the conventional (and arbitrary) electric field criterion, E-c =1 mu V/cm. We defined I-c(sf) as the threshold current,Ic,B, at which the perpendicular component of the local magnetic flux density, B-perpendicular to, measured at any point on the surface of a high-temperature superconducting tape abruptly crosses over from a non-linear to a linear dependence with increasing transport current. This effect results from the current distribution across the tape width progressively transitioning from non-uniform to uniform. The completion of this progressive transition was found to be singular. It coincides with the first discernible onset of dissipation and immediately precedes the formation of a measureable electric field. Here, we show that the same I-c,I-B definition of critical currents applies in the presence of an external applied magnetic field, B-a. In all experimental data presented here I-c,I-B is found to be significantly (10-30%) lower than I-c,I-E determined by the common electric field criterion of E-c =1 mu V/cm, and E-c to be up to 50 times lower at I-c,I-B than at I-c,I-E.

This research proposes an ultrasonic testing method for inspecting pitting corrosion cracks in a rivet of multilayer structures. The system is a combination of a magnetic sensor array and an ultrasonic sensor The magnetic sensor array is used to automatically measure the presence of a rivet and its center position. Then, the ultrasonic sensor is guided to the rivet center in order to inspect pitting corrosion cracks in the rivet. The magnetic sensor uses a 64-hall sensor elements array with a 0.52-mm interval that can measure the rivet center position at a standard deviation of 0.27 mm and 0.42 mm in the scan and sensor directions, respectively. The ultrasonic signal is analyzed in the frequency domain using the short-time Fourier transform that helps better observe the presence of cracks compared with the conventional signal analysis in A-scan present.

Effect of the Bending Strain on the Inhomogeneity of Critical Current for YBCO Coated Conductors

The inhomogeneity of critical current in long superconducting tape is one of the factors affecting the performance of the superconducting magnet. We investigate the effect of the bending strain on the inhomogeneity of critical current for the YBCO-coated conductor by a hall sensor array system. Two kinds of the commercial YBCO-coated conductor tapes, which are prepared by rolling-assisted biaxially textured substrate (RABiTS) and ion-beam-assisted deposition (IBAD), are used for measurement. The bending strain is applied to the coated conductor tapes, and the distribution of the perpendicular component of the remanent field in the direction along the tape length after bending is measured by a hall sensor array. The local critical current of the tape is calculated through the method of calibration and the distribution of the critical current in the long tape is described by the Weibull function. The result shows that the inhomogeneity of critical current in the long tape is significantly increased when bending strain exceeds an irreversible strain. The change of the superconducting layer structure is believed to be the cause of the critical current inhomogeneity growth.

This paper reports on a novel application for an array of 32x32 field-effect transistors (FETs) each equipped with four source/drain contact. When the FETs are operated as hall sensors, the array can be used in a high-precision, three-dimensional micro-positioning device by resolving the spatial distribution of magnetic flux densities. Lateral and out-of-plane resolutions (2 sigma) of 3.6 mu m and 16 mu m, respectively, were achieved. More generally, the presented method is perfectly suitable for other applications such as the experimental investigation of the performance of miniaturized magnetic concentrators and, more generally, whenever the spatial distribution of magnetic fields is of interest. This study proposes an automated inspection system to inspect far-side corrosion around rivets in the F-5 supersonic aircraft. The system includes a linear integrated hall sensor array, a C-type exciter, and an automated scanning system. The inspection system was tested on a modified elliptical intake having artificial defects with 10-mm diameter and 0.12-1.11-mm depth. An algorithm was produced to detect the defects. The probability of detection (POD) curve was obtained with hits/misses data using a log-logistics model. Defect with depths of 0.67 and 0.98 mm were detected with 90 % POD and lower 95 % confidence bound.

A diagnostic method for low voltage switching arcs is proposed where the magnetic field of the switching current is used to determine the arc movement. The magnetic field of the switching current density is recorded with an array of field sensors. The time and space resolved readings are compared with results from simulations of the arc. Parameters of the simulation and therefore current densities are adapted to reconstruct the measurement readings. So an inversion of the ill conditioned integral equation is not necessary. Results with a hardly optimized set up showed that this approach may be successfully applied to measure arc movements.
