Calibration of hall sensor array for critical current measurement of YBCO tape with ferromagnetic substrate

HAS (hall sensor array) is a powerful tool to detect the uniformity of HTS (high temperature superconductor) tape through mapping the distribution of remanent or shielding field along the surface of the tape. However, measurement of HTS tape with ferromagnetic parts by HSA is still an issue because the ferromagnetic substrate has influence on the magnetic field around the HTS layer. In this work, a continuous HSA system has been designed to measure the critical current of the YBCO tape with ferromagnetic substrate. The relationship between the remanent field and critical current was calibrated by the finite element method. The result showed that the HSA is an effective method for evaluating the critical current of the HTS tape with ferromagnetic substrate. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A moisture separator reheater (MSR) system is installed between the high-pressure and low-pressure steam turbines in a nuclear power plant to increase the heat efficiency of the power plant. Erosion and corrosion of the MSR tubes have threatened the long-term operation of nuclear power plants. Thus a partial saturation eddy current testing (PSECT) method using a bobbin-type integrated hall sensor array (BIHaS) was proposed in our previous study and it showed good results compared with a conventional PSECT. This paper presents a novel signal processing technique to improve detectability and measurability of electromagnetic testing method using a BIHaS through mitigating the inherent vibration signal noise between the BIHaS and ferritic stainless steel tubes.

This paper presents a nondestructive testing system for inspecting the moisture separator reheater (MSR) tubing system in a nuclear power plant. The technique is based on partial saturation eddy current testing in which a hall sensor array is used to measure the radial component of the electromagnetic field distributed in the tubes. A finned MRS tube of ferritic stainless steel (SS439) with artificial, flat-bottom hole-type defects was used in the experiments. The results show that the proposed system has potential applications in the MSR system or ferromagnetic material tubes in general, which could detect the artificial defects of about 20% of the wall thickness (0.24 mm). Furthermore, the defect volume could be quantitatively evaluated.

Nondestructive Testing of Heat Exchanger Tubes in Balance of Plant using Bobbin Coil and Bobbin-Type Integrated hall sensor array

In this paper, a nondestructive testing system is proposed for inspecting heat exchanger tubes in the balance of plant of a nuclear power plant. A bobbin coil was used to excite an alternating electromagnetic field in heat exchanger tubes, and a bobbin-type integrated hall sensor array (BIHaS) was used to measure the magnetic flux density distribution around discontinuities. The BIHaS was fabricated by arraying 30 hall sensor elements around the circumference of a probe. The system performance was verified by experiments conducted on three 304 stainless steel tubes with artificial circumferential groove, wear scar, axial/circumferential simulated crack, and flat bottom hole discontinuities on the outer diameter surface. The proposed system showed potential for accurate detection and classification of discontinuity types. Furthermore, the discontinuity volume could be estimated.

This paper presents an electromagnetic testing method for moisture separator reheater (MSR) tubes, which is based on partial saturation eddy current testing (PSECT). The sensor probe has a permanent magnet that is used to partially saturate the MSR tube material, a bobbin coil is used to supply an alternating electromagnetic field that penetrates into the tube, and a bobbin-type integrated hall sensor (BIHaS) array is used to measure the radial component of the electromagnetic field distribution in the tube. The BIHaS has 15 hall sensor elements arrayed at 24 degrees (2.72 mm) intervals on the circumference to make a 13.5 mm diameter sensor probe. Thus, the spatial resolution of measurement can be improved rather than using a single/differential-type sensing coil as used in conventional PSECT systems. The efficiency of PSECT over magnetic flux leakage testing and eddy current testing is presented. Furthermore, the quantitative evaluation of damage volume can be performed.

Nondestructive testing and evaluation of aircraft are a great importance from the viewpoint of the integrity and flight safety. In aircraft structures, damage is likely to be observed around the rivets that connect the skin to the frames. This paper presents a sensor system which includes a linearly integrated solid-state hall sensor array (LIHaS). The LIHaS has 64 InSb hall sensors arrayed in 0.52 mm of interval respect to 33.28 mm length of measurement. The sensor system was tested on two flat layers of Aluminium alloy for inspecting far-side corrosions having 6 similar to 14 mm of diameter and 0.1 similar to 1.27 mm of depth.

This paper reports on a novel application for an array of 32x32 field-effect transistors (FETs) each equipped with four source/drain contact. When the FETs are operated as hall sensors, the array can be used in a high-precision, three-dimensional micro-positioning device by resolving the spatial distribution of magnetic flux densities. Lateral and out-of-plane resolutions (2 sigma) of 3.6 mu m and 16 mu m, respectively, were achieved. More generally, the presented method is perfectly suitable for other applications such as the experimental investigation of the performance of miniaturized magnetic concentrators and, more generally, whenever the spatial distribution of magnetic fields is of interest. More accurate localized wire rope testing based on hall sensor array

Most traditional wire rope instruments give the sum of the circumferential magnetic leakage of magnetized wire ropes and identify localized discontinuities according to it. In this way, the circumferential distribution of discontinuities, which has a considerable effect on wire rope's residual load-carrying capacity for the same number of breaks or other faults of the same degree, is ignored. A wire rope testing prototype based on a hall sensor array is developed to acquire the three-dimensional magnetic leakage of the rope surface, which is sensitive to the circumferential distribution of wire rope discontinuities, can distinguish between concentrated broken wires and dispersive ones, and gives more accurate localized discontinuity identification with the method of two-dimensional image processing. Experimental results show that the discrimination of the signal processing method for typical localized discontinuities, such as broken wires of different degrees or raised wires, can reach 91%.

Tactile sensors play a crucial role in developing robots with human like grasping and manipulation capabilities. Localization, dynamic sensing and good force recognition characteristics arc major goals when designing a tactile sensor. However, fulfilling these requirements come at the cost of increased complexity in design, high cost and difficulties in practical implementation due to size. In this research a sensor has been developed that is based on the concept of hall effect. An array of magnets and hall sensors create a unique combination of outputs for each different deformation of the dual layered silicon membrane which houses the magnets. While allowing the interaction with non-planar surfaces due to the compliant nature of the silicon material, the sensor also facilitates accurate force recognition and localization with super-resolution using sensor readings, geometry and elastic properties of the silicon layer. This paper contains the design, fabrication and calibration of the tactile sensor array.
