Variable-Magnification Optical Stimulator for Training and Validation of Spaceborne Vision-Based Navigation

This paper addresses the design, calibration, and utilization of a hardware-in-the loop optical stimulator for the training and validation of vision-based sensors and algorithms used for spaceborne navigation. This testbed overcomes deficiencies of existing approaches in literature, which mainly focus on emulating single operational zones such as inertial, far-range, or close-range relative navigation. Consequently, the behavior of vision-based sensors and algorithms operating in mixed or transitioning navigation regimes have remained poorly assessed before launch. To address these issues, this novel optical stimulator reproduces the large geometric and radiometric dynamic range of the space environment with a pair of lenses to achieve variable magnification of an organic light emitting diode monitor. This approach is shown to support vision-based sensors of both narrow and wide field of view, increase the radiometric dynamic range of the testbed, and emulate close-range scenarios when light from an object is not collimated. A calibration procedure is presented that places sources of light at the intended angular location over the magnification range in the presence of varying distortions. The calibrated testbed is then used to simulate dynamic inertial and relative navigation scenarios of operational relevance. These hardware-in-the-loop simulations allow for the training and validation of optical hardware, software, and algorithms for future distributed space systems.

An Improved Voltage Controller for Distribution Static Compensator

Distribution System consist of different types of loads like linear and nonlinear load. Due to different types of loads, voltage unbalance and other power quality related issues will occur. To overcome this problem, a voltage source inverter based device called distribution static compensator can be used. In this work, an improved voltage controller for distributed static compensator, based on power balancing theory is presented. The improved controller uses only voltage sensors and this controller is developed by considering unbalanced load conditions. Proportional Integral controller is used for maintaining terminal voltage and DC link voltage. The controller is verified for different voltage disturbances such as sag and swell. MATLAB/SIMULINK package is used to verify the controller using simulation. The controller is also verified using hardware in the loop simulation using DSPACE and results are presented for different voltage disturbances.

In this document, the effects of UFPCs on the electric arc furnace feed system at a steel production company were investigated. This new operative strategy was determined in function of the requirements necessary for a stable arch and maximum productivity. On the basis of these new operational conditions, the adequacy of the existing flicker compensation system was examined, in terms of load balancing, power factor correction, and flickering. All of the investigations detailed in this study are supported by hardware in real time, and loop within the simulation. Further, a summarized description of a power quality work station is presented herein.

This paper focuses on developing a universal hardware-in-the-loop simulation workplace which is used in education and research in the field of mechatronic systems modelling and control. The workplace concept is based on generally available and employed hardware (Programmable Logic Controller) and software means (MATLAB), configured to enable work on practically any type of both continuous and discrete system. The technological equipment of the workplace can be further expanded for work on larger MIMO systems found in real technological practice. The workplace is mainly being used for solving tasks related to electric drives, mechatronics, robotics and technological plant control. A case study involving a DC motor drive control is included in the paper.

Underwater glider is a kind of buoyancy driven underwater vehicle;it has the features of low operating noise, long endurance and flexible maneuverability. During the glider long-time navigation, there is a high probability to encounter the pycnocline, which has a great influence on underwater glider's navigation as well as application. In this work, an operation flow of glider hovering movement in the pycnocline was discussed in detail in order to improve the observation performance of glider. We firstly developed an LSTM (Long Short-Term Memory) neural network to identify the pycnocline boundaries. Then the accurate buoyancy adjustment of glider hovering movement was calculated based on the obtained pycnocline information. Finally a hard ware in the loop simulation was implemented to verify the feasibility of the method, and the simulation results showed a reasonable performance of glider hovering in the pycnocline.

Energy management in hybrid and electric vehicles is a key factor to improve the operational performance and meet the efficiency objectives defined in the transport sector. Thus, optimized energy management strategies (EMS), before being integrated in a real system, need to be validated in a scaled test-bench platform in order to identify the possible deviations from the expected simulation-based profiles, thus, saving time during the implementation in the real application. An economical and flexible way of validating these strategies is the hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation. In this framework, this work aims to compare the experimental results of two optimized (simulation-based) EMSs applied on a hybrid electric urban bus (HEB) in terms of real-time operational performance. Both EMSs handle the proper power split behavior of the vehicle demand between a genset (internal combustion engine connected to an electric generator) and a hybrid energy storage system (combining Li-ion batteries with supercapacitors). The hardware in the test-bench consist of a scaled electrical DC grid of an HEB. This hardware platform is combined with software models allowing to emulate the real behavior of the genset, battery, supercapacitor, traction and auxiliary loads.

Virtual synchronous generator technology is a new generation of renewable energy generation control technology in recent years. By making up the droop characteristics and rotation inertia of the synchronous generator in the traditional power system, the renewable energy generation has the characteristics of the traditional generator. At present, there is no unified testing method for PV virtual synchronous generators with different technical routes, and the technical regulations and test regulations of the related virtual synchronous generators at home and abroad are in blank. In this paper, a test method for rotating inertia and damping of PV virtual synchronous generator based on the function of power frequency transfer function is proposed and verified by a hardware in the loop simulation platform. This method does not need to take into account the two order and above characteristics of the virtual synchronous generator. It is suitable for various types of PV virtual synchronous generator rotation inertia test, and solves the problem of the lack of standardized test method for the damping characteristic of the virtual synchronous generator.

It is great significance to improve the automobile power characteristics, reduce the emission of the engine and improve the efficiency of fuel utilization by controlling the electronic throttle. In this paper, a nonlinear compensation controller is designed to improve tracking performance and restrain the oscillation caused by nonlinear perturbation. A system computer simulation and hardware in the loop simulation are carried out by simulink box and connecting the electronic throttle to the system to verify the feasibility of the nonlinear compensation controller. The simulation results show that the nonlinear compensation control system is significantly better than traditional PID system. The designed nonlinear compensation control throttle system has shorter regulating time, smaller overshoot and certain robustness.

Transformer Differential and overcurrent schemes are traditionally used as main and backup protection respectively. The differential protection relay (SEL487E) has dedicated harmonic restraint function which blocks the relay during the transformer magnetizing inrush conditions. However, the backup overcurrent relay (SEL751A) applied to the transformer protection does not have a harmonic restraint element and trips the overcurrent relay during the inrush conditions. Therefore, to prevent the malfunction caused by the transformer magnetizing inrush current, a novel harmonic blocking method is developed, implemented and tested in the RSCAD simulation environment. The IEEE 14 bus transmission system is considered as a case study. The IEEE 14 bus system is modelled and simulated in the DIgSILENT and RSCAD simulation environments respectively. The developed harmonic blocking scheme is implemented in the hardware-In-the-loop (HIL) simulation environment using Real-Time Digital Simulator and numerical protection IEDs. The developed scheme uses the Harmonic Blocking element (87HB) of the transformer differential relay (SEL487E) to send an IEC61850 GOOSE-based harmonic blocking signal to the backup overcurrent relay (SEL751A) to inhibit it from tripping during the transformer magnetizing inrush current conditions. The hardwired and GOOSE simulation results are analysed for the transformer differential protection and the backup overcurrent protection schemes for internal, external events and transformer magnetizing inrush current conditions. The simulation results proved that the IEC61850 standard-based protection scheme is faster than the hardwired. Therefore, the speed and reliability are improved using the IEC61850 standard-based GOOSE applications to the transformer digital protective relaying system.

This paper is a contribution to the development of real time simulators for energy conversion research with respects to the ＂hardware in the loop simulation＂ concept. The focus is on the study of marine current kinetics energy conversion from into electrical energy using a marine current turbine simulator, developed in three stages. In the first stage the marine current turbine is emulated with the help of an induction drive who reproduces at its shaft the characteristics of a real turbine. It is connected with a load break used to force the emulator to respect on its shaft the characteristics of the real turbine. In the second stage, the induction drive is connected on the shaft with a doubly feed induction generator, for the study of energy conversion. The emulator respects the working regime, developed in the previous step, of a real turbine due to the control of the drive. In the third stage the induction machine emulating the turbine is interconnected with the generator and the load break. This assembly is used for the dynamic study of the marine current turbine. The break is used to create extra loads on the shaft and a variable inertial moment.
