Today Earth's orbit is becoming more crowded with satellites and space debris. However, two commercial satellites were successfully docked by Northrup Grumman in 2020. With successful satellite docking, it is possible to remove debris within Earth's orbit and increase the lifetime of functioning satellites by sending satellites that are no longer functional beyond Earth's orbit. The goal of this project is to create a software platform to test the control algorithms in the NanoSat Laboratory and develop means for ground testing. By modeling space vehicles and space environment to simulate proximity operations using MATLAB. Next, small spacecraft simulator parts will be designed for ground testing, using 3D printing technology and hardware-in-the-loop simulations. This project can potentially be extended to other applications on multiple Unmanned Aerial Vehicles such as assembling parts at a high altitude, as well as creating a starting point for a spinoff company to produce software simulation tools for broad space engineering and industrial applications.

Data communication plays a very important role in the hardware in the loop simulation system. The system architecture of periscope semi-physical simulation system is proposed at first. Then the data communication method based on FINS between PLC and PC is introduced, the user's interaction of scene is achieved by PLC. The communication based on TCP between 2D chart console and scene simulation system is also introduced. The 6-DOF motion model and the scene simulation system is connected by TCP, and a DR method is introduced in solving the data amount problem. The test shows that the simulation system has no error package and no missing in a simulation circle. And can meet the requirements of training, also shows good performance in reliability and real-time.

This paper describes a series of lab modules designed to support student learning after a lab-based course in autonomous systems switched to a remote learning format during the spring of 2020. The Autonomous Unmanned Systems Stream is a course-based undergraduate research experience that serves first-year students at the University of Maryland. Incoming cohorts begin their year-long experience in January with a ten-week training syllabus that relies on a balance of scholarly inquiry and in-lab activities to engage key experiential learning modes. Students then form teams and propose unmanned-vehicle projects with societal relevance beyond the classroom that they pursue for the rest of the year. Student training was disrupted in Spring 2020 when universities were forced to cancel in-person classes and close labs due to the global COVID-19 outbreak. I created two extension lab sequences to facilitate basic experimentation with embedded hardware and motion planning concepts while helping students to develop basic decision-making strategies for their own research projects. nCoV-BusterBot is a fictional vehicle that disinfects indoor spaces using an onboard UV emitter array;the labs simulate its mission using a hardware-in-the-loop ground station framework and with a separate paper-based board game designed to be printed and assembled at home. Student survey results indicate the new labs helped maintain student engagement after transitioning to a remote learning format and were successful in supporting their respective learning and research outcomes.

In-band interferers in wireless communication channels are due to the high order harmonics of multiple clock frequencies used by baseband digital signal processing in a single-chip solution. The impacts of in-band spurious tones on wireless performance are explored with hardware-in-the-loop simulation (HILS) of the LTE compliant systems. RE receiver circuits fabricated in a 65 nm CMOS technology are involved in the HIES, for combining circuit-level interactions at the front end and system-level digital signal processing in the back end. Experiments exhibit the sensitivity of LTE communication throughput against substrate coupling noise from a digital noise emulator to the RF receiver circuits on the same chip. The observed response is equivalently confirmed with the input referred RE sinusoidal noise components intentionally added to the input RE signal with LTE modulation. The HIES enables hierarchical diagnosis of a wireless communication system from circuit-level interactions to system-level responses against noise coupling

The comprehensive control platform of a simulator is the control center of a hardware in the loop simulation system, whose key technologies are timing precision and timing data synchronization. This paper achieves the precise timing using the high-precision timer under a real-time extension(RTX) system, designs the driving program of VMIC card under the RTX system, studies the data synchronization algorithm, its flow chart and the method for designing the software of the comprehensive control platform. The study results indicate preliminarily that the hardware in the loop simulation system can achieve precise timing, does not produce erroneous frames or lose any frames,, ensures its synchronization of data transmission and thus is worth applying to the development of a missile weapon system

The modular multilevel matrix converter (M3C) represents a direct AC/AC converter configuration with significant potential for high-power applications in the medium voltage range. Given the increased number of sub-modules and the control complexity, HIL testing is recommended to validate the operation of the converter and its control before deployment in the field. Additionally, the real-time simulation of such topology remains challenging because of the increased number of converter valves compared to a classical MMC. This paper presents a modeling approach based on an equivalent circuit method both efficient and precise, and designed for real-time simulation of the M3C. The proposed method can be used for HIL testing or accelerated simulation.

Robotics courses play a central role in the electronic engineering curriculum. Those courses provide students with knowledge and skill in multiple aspects of the design, simulation, implementation and operation of systems using robotics technologies for applications in areas such as the industrial, medical, services, among others. This work describes the implementation and application of a Matlab-based platform using low-cost technologies as an educational tool to be included in robotics courses. The platform comprises an Arduino as a target for hardware in the loop (HIL) simulation using Matlab and a 6 Degree of Freedom (DoF) articulated robotic arm. The HIL simulation system differs from computer simulation in such a way that it involves actual hardware and permits controlling the real world actuators and sensors. It was carried out set of experiments aimed to evaluate the platform in the field of human-robot interaction;specifically, through an application to control the robotic arm to follow movements of a human upper limb. Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) was used to correlate movement provided by user and the actual movement executed by the robotic arm. Obtained mean measurement errors were RMSE of 4.7 degrees for static validation and 5.3 degrees for dynamic tests.

The development and evaluation of precision strike weaponry requires high fidelity image simulation, as data collections involving moving platforms are difficult to schedule and costly to perform. Furthermore, live data collections where the weapon is being guided by an autonomous target acquisition (ATA) system cannot be performed in dense urban environments. The only solution is to develop high fidelity image and navigation simulations of realistic operating environments. We are currently developing a system that automatically generates a detailed urban scene requiring minimal user input. Given a set of parameters such as population, terrain, and city style, the system generates a two-dimensional city plan containing features such as road networks, buildings, vehicles, vegetation, and miscellaneous additional urban objects. The two-dimensional city representation is then processed by an interactive scene modeling and simulation environment that generates a textured, high-resolution, three-dimensional representation of the scene in a format compatible with well-known LADAR and IR sensor simulation suites such as IRMA. At each step in the process, the user has the ability to interact with the scene, whether to change specific scene parameters or to manually insert, remove, or modify targets and objects of interest.

The commercial market has recently started giving significant attention to virtual and augmented reality, even though the technology has been around for many years. The Virtual Reality Training Lab (VRL) at the NASA Johnson Space Center has been using virtual reality to train astronauts for decades. This paper will focus on describing three major hardware-in-the-loop VR simulation systems, the Simplified Aid for EVA Rescue (SAFER) system known as the "jetpack", the Mass Handling System nicknamed Charlotte, and a simulated robotics environment for collaborative mission evaluation. Two of these systems are critical for astronaut training. Crewmust certify on SAFER and go through the Charlotte Mass Handling training prior to flying to the International Space Station (ISS). Typically, they also complete at least one collaborative visualization session to review any planned Extra Vehicular Activities (EVAs), or spacewalks, before an assigned flight. Given the volatility of new technologies, the graphics and simulation environments used are maintained to be hardware agnostic to preserve a high level of fidelity. Utilizing VR for astronaut training has proved to be effective and essential for these specific systems.

Anti-lock braking systems (ABS) is a type of mechanical electrical system in which are used to prevent wheel locking of vehicle as a result of excessive actuation of the service braking system, especially on slippery roads. According to electric control unit (ECU) research requirement of ABS system, this paper introduce a hardware-in-the-loop simulation (HILS) test bench, which can through open and close loop test methods accomplish calibration the parameters of the inside ECU, performance evaluation and fault diagnosis and tolerance test, not only can shorten the development cycle, but also save research and development costs of ECU.
