This paper explains several industrial cases involving the HIL simulation of MW-range drives and inverters using CPU cores with FPGAs to compute model equations. The use of HIL simulators is common today in the industry to accelerate design cycles, mitigate financial and human risks and support software updates throughout the product life cycle. The first case presented is a 2-level inverter scheme in which increasing power specifications are met by adding parallel IGBT-modules. The second case is a multi-level motor drive with low harmonic injection on the AC-side. The third case is a modular multi-level converter in a grid application. We also discuss a new T-type inverter model that uses an industry PV-to-grid power converter. In each case, all power system modelling was done using Simulink and SimPowerSystems in conjunction with the SSN solver from the ARTEMiS blockset in addition to code generation for CPU execution at time steps in the 20–50 μm range, with an exception for MMC models on FPGA. In all cases the firing accuracy of the IGBTs remains in the nanosecond range using time-stamping techniques and an FPGA board. In this article, we study the voltage regulation problem for an inverter-interfaced power distribution network that is subject to possible adversarial injections and/or severe fault scenarios. Different from the current literature, our aim is not just to regulate the voltage levels on the gridline within the prescribed range, but also to provide a measure of reliability for the safe operation of the grid with respect to such adversarial events. In that respect, we propose the framework of resilient control design which ensures safe operation of the grid under nominal conditions (with regard to the given voltage regulation objective) and, additionally, offers theoretical guarantees of finite-time recovery following intermittent fault/ safety violations. To validate these claims, we test the proposed resilient controller on a dedicated testbed for power inverter networks and, through hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation case studies, showcase the efficacy of the suggested control scheme.

The Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is expected to mitigate the power supply-demand imbalance induced by the fluctuation of power generation from the variable renewable energy resources and the reduced system inertia caused by decreased number of synchronous generators. Since the BESS can quickly adjust its power output according to the grid frequency fluctuations, it is regarded as one of the most important resources providing the fast frequency response (FFR) service, which requests the resources to adjust their active power output according to the grid frequency fluctuations. From a point of view of the utility-scale BESS project development, estimating the dynamic performance criteria, such as response speed and control accuracy, in advance of the field commissioning is important. However, it is challenging since their power rating is more than MW scale. Based on the above awareness, controller hardware-in-the-loop simulation (CHILs) is regarded as the method enabling the verification of the expected dynamic performance of the utility-scale BESS at the initial stage of the project development. This paper compares the control response time and control accuracy of the BESS in three test environments consisting of CHILs , reduced-scale facility, and the actual utility-scale BESS built in GB. The results suggest that CHILs has a good compatibility with reduced-scale test and field test in terms of the dynamic performance of the BESS.

The turboshaft engine is the major component in the propulsion system of most marine vehicles, and proper control of its function as a sub-system in the propulsion system has a direct impact on the performance of the vehicle's propulsion control system. The engine performance control is performed through the fuel control system. The fuel control system of a turboshaft gas turbine engine consists of two parts: electronic control unit and fuel control unit which is the actuator of the fuel control system. In this article, a hardware-in-the-loop simulation is presented for testing and verifying the performance of the fuel control unit. In the hardware-in-the-loop simulation, the fuel control unit in hardware form is tested in connection with the numerically simulated model of engine and electronic control unit. In this simulation, a Wiener model for the turboshaft engine is developed which is validated with the experimental data. Subsequently, a multi-loop fuel controller algorithm is designed for the engine and the parameters are optimized so that the time response and physical constraints are satisfied. In the next step, a state-of-the-art hydraulic test setup is built and implemented to perform the hardware-in-the-loop test. The test system contains personal and industrial computer, sensors, hydraulic components, and data acquisition cards to connect software and hardware parts to each other. In this hardware-in-the-loop simulator, a host-target structure is used for real-time simulation of the software models. The results show the effectiveness of hardware-in-the-loop simulation in fuel control unit evaluation and verify the steady and transient performance of the designed actuator.

Air pollution is an extraordinarily big problem in developing countries, as well as some metropolitan cities. Infiltration of the outdoor air inside buildings, together with other factors can significantly lower the indoor air quality. Particulate matter (PM) pollution is recognized as one of the biggest problems with regards to indoor air quality. An increasingly popular method for dealing with indoor PM pollution is the use of mobile air purifiers. In this paper, a mathematical model for the indoor PM pollution, and the effect of the purifier is presented. This model is verified using an experimental setup. Then an automatic control system is developed based on the model. Finally, a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation of the control system is performed using a Raspberry Pi 4 B and an ST Nucleo-64 board. © 2021 IEEE.

hardware-in-the-loop simulation (HILS) can enhance the authenticity and reliability of off-line simulation at the design stage, and reduce the risk of equipment performance commissioning for complex systems. This paper focuses on the HILS of the control mechanism of a nuclear-powered engineering ship including a two-loop nuclear power system, an electric power system, and a mechanical system. In the software part, the mathematical model is implemented in Modelica language with OpenModelica. The nuclear power system is demonstrated in steady-state referring to the Japanese nuclear power merchant ship "NS Mutsu" and is debugged under transient conditions with help of an operation control module. The electric power system and mechanical system were developed to have the certain functions for the marine engineering. In the hardware part, the system is built based on an Arduino microcontroller, the Modelica open-source library, and a Bluetooth-based communication protocol between the computer and microcontroller. The study proved that HILS is capable to simulate the multi-physical joint operation on the software level, to establish the real-time action response and data feedback between the software and hardware parts, and to complete steady-state as well as various transient simulations. © 2023, The Authors. The complexity of industrial process brings some problems such as modeling difficulty to traditional monitoring process methods. Aiming at the requirement of automatic operation and safety monitoring of hardware-in-the-loop simulation experiment of aircraft control system, a data-driven automatic operation experiment system is designed and implemented. The data-driven automatic operation experiment system includes temperature measuring safety monitoring module and whole process power supply program control module, using multivariate statistical monitoring method in order to realize the monitoring of process data with high adaptability. Real-time temperature information is collected and uploaded in the complexity of process. According to the experiment flow, each power supply and management computer is controlled to realize the remote automatic control of power supply. The experiment results show that the system can upload and collect temperature data quickly, automatically complete the experiment according to the experiment procedure, and has good real-time performance and high degree of automation.

An Event-Based Synchronization Framework for Controller hardware-in-the-loop simulation of Electric Railway Power Electronics Systems

The Controller hardware-in-the-loop (CHIL) simulation is gaining popularity as a cost-effective, efficient, and reliable tool in the design and development process of fast-growing electrified transportation power converters. However, it is challenging to implement the conventional CHIL simulations on the railway power converters with complex topologies and high switching frequencies due to strict real-time constraints. Therefore, this paper proposes an event-based synchronization CHIL (ES-CHIL) framework for high-fidelity simulation of these electrified railway power converters. Different from conventional CHIL simulations synchronized through the time axis, the ES-CHIL framework is synchronized through the event axis. Therefore, it can ease the real-time constraint and broaden the upper bound on the system size and switching frequency. Besides, models and algorithms with higher accuracy, such as the diode model with natural commutation processes, can be used in the ES-CHIL framework. The proposed framework is validated for a 350 kW wireless power transformer system containing 24 fully controlled devices and 36 diodes by comparing it with Simulink® and physical experiments. This research improves the fidelity and application range of the power converter’s CHIL simulation. Thus, it helps to accelerate the prototype design and performance evaluation process for electrified railways and other applications with such complex converters. 1 Copyright © 2023, The Authors.
