In this study, we employ hardware-in-the loop (HIL) simulation to model, characterize, and analyze the effects of a single-phase microgrid incorporating Distributed Energy Resources (DER) units. HIL simulations allow us to execute an accurate assessment of the performance of DER units before their effective implementation in a real electrical grid. This is critical to identifying and resolving potential issues, optimizing the design and ensuring that the DER meets expectations in terms of energy production, efficiency, and reliability. Accurate system characterization for HIL applications assists in minimizing rework costs and helps to test robustness and evaluate operating scenarios and respond to unforeseen events such as grid failures, playing a crucial role in optimization, integration, safe and efficient operation of distributed generation units. To implement our simulation, we used a microgrid divided in three modules, composed by: 600-nodes, two PV array connected to IGBTs/VSIs, a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) unit connected to the system via a contactor switch and an output filter and, a Wind Energy Conversion System (WECS) unit. The model and real-time simulation results are presented and analyzed using a OPAL-RTTM 5707 simulator. © 2024 IEEE.

The objective of this work is the implementation and experimental validation of a high frequency sampling technique for switch gate drive signals, known as Gate Drive Signal Over-sampling (GDS Oversampling). This technique allows a static power converter to be simulated in real time with an integration step of the same order of magnitude as the switching period. The implementation is carried out in a Texas Instruments F28379D microcontroller, and for validation purposes a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation of a Step-Up converter is performed. In this HIL configuration, one core of the microcontroller is responsible for simulating the converter, using an average model, while the other core is responsible for controlling the converter. Finally, the obtained results are compared with an offline simulation carried out entirely in PSIM. © 2023 IEEE.

Evaluation of motor characteristics for hybrid electric vehicles using the hardware-in-the-loop concept

If the concept of hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) is applied to component testing, characteristic of component of hybrid electric vehicle in real vehicle environment can be evaluated without actually installing that component in real vehicle. In this paper, when commercially available test motor is adopted as a drivetrain of hybrid vehicle, we need to figure out which drive train configuration would be best for specific purpose. The characteristic of the motor when it is installed in the vehicle at different drive train and driving mode can be simulated and actual characteristic can be measured. Also both results can be compared. For the hardware characteristic measurement, test facility which consists of vehicle simulator and dynamometer is required. In this case, vehicle controller in the vehicle simulator is used as a vehicle controller and dynamometer is used to simulate vehicle dynamics. Two drive train types, 4-motor series, and 2-motor parallel type are proposed. Vehicle speed tracks driving cycle speed command well in both simulation and HIL implementation.

Advanced hardware-in-the-loop testing chain for investigating interactions between smart grid components during transients

Aiming to investigate the possible interactions between smart grid components during transient events, an advanced hardware-in-the-loop testing chain for the validation of novel smart grid solutions is proposed in this paper. The testing chain is directed towards both academic and industrial hardware-in-the-loop users, e.g., relay manufacturers, power electronics manufacturers and DSOs/TSOs. All different hardware-in-the-loop simulation setups, ranging from simple local simulations up to more elaborate, power hardware-in-the-loop simulations, are discussed, forming a solid testing chain. The interactions during transients, which can be investigated at each step, are analytically derived to emphasize the insights that each step can offer to the performed component validation. To highlight the applicability of the proposed hardware-in-the-loop testing chain, when validating smart grid components, a case study concerning the testing of a microgrid transition algorithm, between the interconnected and islanded modes of operation, is considered for a real microgrid. Particularly, the interactions between an advanced grid-forming inverter and the already existing grid-following inverters of the microgrid are investigated during normal and abnormal grid conditions, while following the appropriate steps of the proposed testing chain.

Impacts of Wireless on Robot Control: The Network hardware-in-the-loop Simulation Framework and Real-Life Comparisons

As many robot applications become more reliant on wireless communications, wireless network latency and reliability have a growing impact on robot control. This article proposes a network hardware-in-the-loop (N-HiL) simulation framework to evaluate the impacts of wireless on robot control more efficiently and accurately, and then improve the design by employing correlation analysis between communication and control performances. The N-HiL method provides communication and robot developers with more trustworthy network conditions, while the huge efforts and costs of building and testing the entire physical robot system in real life are eliminated. These benefits are showcased in two representative latency-sensitive applications: 1) safe multirobot coordination for mobile robots, and 2) human-motion-based teleoperation for manipulators. Moreover, we deliver a preliminary assessment of two new-generation wireless technologies, the Wi-Fi6 and 5G, for those applications, which has demonstrated the effectiveness of the N-HiL method as well as the attractiveness of the wireless technologies.

FPGA-Based hardware-in-the-loop Simulation of User Selection Algorithms for Cooperative Transmission Technology Over LOS Channel on Geosynchronous Satellites

Distributed satellite clusters and cooperative transmission technology have been used to improve the communication capability of the geosynchronous orbit (GEO) satellites in recent years. To validate the effectiveness of distributed cooperative technology, the authors designed an information transmission system using FPGA-based hardware-in-the-loop simulation. The focus of this paper is to complete the implementation of the link layer user selection algorithm to verify that cooperative transmission techniques are feasible. This system uses a Xilinx ML605 FPGA for simulating the synchronization and exchange of data during coordinated transmission in a GEO window. The authors assumed a dual-satellite scenario in the simulation used to validate the efficacy of the satellite system. After testing the system optimized with pipelining technology, the number of clock cycles was reduced by 66%. Furthermore, tests showed the system can process multi-user channel data with signal-to-noise ratios ranging from 110dB to 195dB and could select the optimal channel. Additionally, in a case study with 10 users and 2 collocated satellites, this optimized system's operation speed is approximately 2000 times faster-after hardware acceleration-than general-purpose processors, which verifies the efficacy of using distributed cooperative transmission algorithms. Because of this, the low-cost, and the low-power features, this system is a promising candidate for an embedded real-time simulation platform for GEO satellites.

In order to further reduce the vibration of vehicles and simultaneously increase ride comfort, a class of new control strategies, namely, the extension of Rakheja-Sankar (RS) control, is proposed for semi-active suspension systems with magnetorheological (MR) dampers of high-speed trains. At first, the design and analysis of semi-active control strategies are conducted in a quarter railway lateral model considering the node stiffness. Secondly, a whole vehicle model of a high-speed train is constructed by using Universal Mechanism (UM) software to be applied in evaluating semi-active control strategies. Finally, a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) test system is carried out to verify the performance of the new control strategies. During these processes, the transmission characteristics are calculated and compared, which helps to test the performance of the semi-active control strategy on train vibration suppression. Then, the effect of the control strategies on the dynamic performance of the whole vehicle is studied. The ride comfort under different control strategies is compared, and the effects of different semi-active control strategies on the lateral stability and safety of trains are also analyzed. Through simulations and experiments, it is confirmed that the new control strategies can effectively reduce the lateral vibration of trains and therefore contribute to the improvement of ride comfort while they do not significantly reduce the train running stability and safety. Therefore, the new control strategies possess future application value.

An actuator-based hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation for testing of a jet engine fuel control unit (FCU) is presented. In this approach, the FCU operates dynamically as the hardware in connection with an integrated flight and propulsion numerical simulation. The simulator is built based on a state-of-the-art hydraulic test bench which experimentally simulates hydraulic loads imposed on the FCU in flight conditions. For this purpose, an electric motor is employed to drive the FCU gear-typed fuel pump using the reference shaft speed signal that comes from the simulation. The HIL simulator developed in this study is finally used to test the FCU and to investigate the interaction between the FCU and overall aircraft performance. The results of HIL simulation demonstrate the functionality of the proposed HIL simulation during flight maneuvers. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The Aviation Rockets and Missiles Project Management Office (ARM PMO) chose to invest in hardware-in-the-loop (HWIL) simulation as an integral part of their Longbow/HELLFIRE (Helicopter Launched, Fire-and-Forget) program throughout the development and production phases. This investment has resulted in two HWIL simulations, developed by the AMCOM Research Development and Engineering Center, that have had unprecedented success in program support from the early development through production phases. The Millimeter Simulation System 1 (MSS-1) facility is capable of edge-of-the-envelope performance analysis and verification using high-fidelity target, background, and countermeasures signature modeling. The System Test/Acceptance Facility (STAF), developed in partnership with Redstone Technical Test Center, tests full-up missiles for production lot acceptance. Between these two facilities, HWIL simulation is responsible for preflight confidence testing of missile hardware and software, software IV&V testing, comprehensive performance evaluation, component verification, production lot acceptance, and data gathering for the shelf life extension program. The Longbow/HELLFIRE program is now entering a Pre-Planned Product Improvement (PPPI) program to add an anti-jammer capability to the missile program. To support this new phase in the development of the Longbow/HELLFIRE missile system the HWIL facilities must be upgraded to meet the challenges of properly testing these new modes of operation. The areas of upgrade will include MMW scene generation, Synthetic Line of Sight (SLOS) algorithms, and MMW Jammer hardware. This paper will highlight the innovative facility upgrades and modeling techniques that will be utilized to produce HWIL simulations to support both the development and production phases of this PPPI program.

Amherst Systems has previously developed a Real-time IR/EO Scene Simulator (RISS) for use in reactive, hardware-in-the-loop testing of infrared sensor systems. This paper will report on how RISS is currently being used to test and develop a variety of sensor systems, with emphasis on the use of both measured and modeled signature data to create test scenarios. Ongoing efforts to utilize models and data such as DIRSIG, RadTherm, MuSES, TERTEM, and PRA WITMaps will be examined, and their relevance to specific testing requirements will be explored. For example, Amherst Systems has recently completed an effort for a U.S. Government organization to construct a suite of operational scenarios to be used in conjunction with its previously installed RISS in order to stimulate a specific IR/EO sensor in a test environment. These scenarios used both measured and modeled data. This paper will explain how data from several sources were assembled into cohesive scenarios to model real, operational environments and engagements. It will detail the sources for all measured data that were used throughout the scenario development process. It will also explain how readily available, government-furnished models (such as MODTRAN, DISAMS, SPF/SPURC, and BLUEMAX) were used to construct these integrated scenarios, making validation of the scenarios much more feasible.
