Design and implementation of a real-time hardware-in-the-loop testing platform for a dual-rotor tail-sitter unmanned aerial vehicle

Tail-sitter vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) vehicle is a promising airframe among all the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), although challenges regarding the control strategies remain for civil applications, such as high susceptibility to wind disturbance while hovering. A real-time hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation method for a tail-sitter UAV, an efficient tool for developing the control system, is presented in this paper. A nonlinear six-degrees-of-freedom dynamic model that covers the full angle-of-attack range is derived using the component breakdown approach. The environmental model is further introduced in the real-time simulation application to provide prevailing and gust wind conditions. A commonly used open-source flight controller was embedded in the proposed HIL framework. This HIL testbed can help researchers minimise the time spent debugging the controller program and moving from the simulation control system to the practical control one. The HIL simulation system was validated with the typical complete flight scenarios of a tail-sitter, including hovering, forward transition, cruise, and back transition. The results demonstrate that the HIL system can be an efficient tool for verifying the performance of hardware and software designs of the control system at the development stage for tail-sitter UAVs.

Interval type-2 fuzzy neural network controller for a multivariable anesthesia system based on a hardware-in-the-loop simulation

Objective: This manuscript describes the use of a hardware-in-the-loop simulation to simulate the control of a multivariable anesthesia system based on an interval type-2 fuzzy neural network (IT2FNN) controller. Methods and materials: The IT2FNN controller consists of an interval type-2 fuzzy linguistic process as the antecedent part and an interval neural network as the consequent part. It has been proposed that the IT2FNN controller can be used for the control of a multivariable anesthesia system to minimize the effects of surgical stimulation and to overcome the uncertainty problem introduced by the large inter-individual variability of the patient parameters. The parameters of the IT2FNN controller were trained online using a back-propagation algorithm. Results: Three experimental cases are presented. All of the experimental results show good performance for the proposed controller over a wide range of patient parameters. Additionally, the results show better performance than the type-1 fuzzy neural network (T1FNN) controller under the effect of surgical stimulation. The response of the proposed controller has a smaller settling time and a smaller overshoot compared with the T1FNN controller and the adaptive interval type-2 fuzzy logic controller (AIT2FLC). The values of the performance indices for the proposed controller are lower than those obtained for the T1FNN controller and the AIT2FLC. Conclusion: The IT2FNN controller is superior to the T1FNN controller for the handling of uncertain information due to the structure of type-2 fuzzy logic systems (FLSs), which are able to model and minimize the numerical and linguistic uncertainties associated with the inputs and outputs of the FLSs. Control hardware-in-the-loop Simulation on Fast Frequency Response of Battery Energy Storage System Equipped With Advanced Frequency Detection Algorithm

Fast frequency response (FFR) of battery energy storage system (BESS) is an effective way to mitigate the system frequency deviation induced by the fluctuation of power generation from the increased renewable energy resources and the impact of reduced system inertia caused by decreased synchronous generators. However, existing standards referring to technical requirements for the frequency measurement do not sufficiently consider abnormal grid conditions, such as voltage unbalance, frequency sweep, and dynamic voltage step. This article shows the impact of frequency measurement logic on the FFR performance of BESS in grid disturbance conditions by control hardware-in-the-loop (CHIL) testing and proposes improved frequency measurement logic based on a phase-locked loop (PLL). A benchmarking of the proposed PLL was conducted against existing PLL and discrete Fourier transformation-based frequency measurement logics. Finally, the FFR performance of BESS with each frequency measurement logic has been tested in CHIL simulation. This CHIL comprises the actual power plant controller, the actual bidirectional inverter control board, and a real-time simulator. In the CHIL experiments, several system disturbance situations likely to happen in existing power systems were considered as test cases and showed that the frequency measurement accuracy and latency were violated in some frequency measurement logics. Furthermore, this article reveals the effects of frequency measurement accuracy and latency on the FFR performance of BESS by a closed-loop power control simulation with a CHIL environment. In conclusion, considerations for the frequency measurement method used for FFR are proposed.

A controlled migration genetic algorithm operator for hardware-in-the-loop experimentation

In this paper, we describe the development of an extended migration operator, which combats the negative effects of noise on the effective search capabilities of genetic algorithms. The research is motivated by the need to minimise the number of evaluations during hardware-in-the-loop experimentation, which can carry a significant cost penalty in terms of time or financial expense. The authors build on previous research, where convergence for search methods such as simulated annealing and variable neighbourhood search was accelerated by the implementation of an adaptive decision support operator. This methodology was found to be effective in searching noisy data surfaces. Providing that noise is not too significant, genetic algorithms can prove even more effective guiding experimentation. It will be shown that with the introduction of a controlled migration operator into the GA heuristic, data, which represents a significant signal-to-noise ratio, can be searched with significant beneficial effects on the efficiency of hardware-in-the-loop experimentation, without a priori parameter tuning. The method is tested on an engine-in-the-loop experimental example, and shown to bring significant performance benefits. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Emulator-based control for actuator-based hardware-in-the-loop testing

hardware-in-the-loop (HWiL) is a form of component testing where hardware components are linked with software models. In order to test mechanical components an additional transfer system is required to link the software and hardware subsystems. The transfer system typically comprises sensors and actuators and the dynamic effects of these components need to be eliminated to give accurate results. In this paper an emulator-based control strategy is presented for actuator-based HWiL. Emulator-based control can solve the twin problems of stability and fidelity caused by the unwanted transfer system (actuator) dynamics. Significantly EBC can emulate the inverse of a transfer system which is not causally invertible, allowing a wider range of more complex transfer systems to be controlled. Flip-validated milling process in hardware-in-the-loop environment

High speed hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) system was built including real spindle subjected to emulated high resolution state dependent cutting force of milling operation. Regenerative chatter is the main limitation of milling operations that may go unstable with frequency locked to the spindle speed producing flip-type insta-bilities. Its appearance is a unique phenomenon which is undeniable proof of the correct HIL representation of real milling operations. Its dependency on the tool pitch is presented experimentally and compared to an analytical approximation. The flip-type loss of stability is highly relevant for finishing operations, where interrupted cutting forces with flip harmonics often arise.& COPY;2023 The Author(s). A long short-term memory neural network approach for the hardware-in-the-loop simulation of diesel generator sets

The electronic speed governor plays an important role in diesel generator sets. The ideal method for developing and debugging the electronic governor is to simulate the diesel engine's dynamic characteristics with the hardware-in-the-loop simulation system. In this system, the diesel engine can be replaced by a mathematical model. Our research proposed a novel diesel engine modeling method using the long short-term memory neural network for simulating dynamic characteristics of the rotational speed of diesel generator sets. The proposed model is trained and tested on the data of the real diesel generator sets. With different power loads and unloads, experimental results demonstrated that this method was able to successfully simulate the dynamic characteristics of diesel generator sets. In addition, comparing to other existing methods provided a conclusion that the performance of the model was better than others. Finally, the proposed model was deployed on an established hardware-in-the-loop simulation system. The results further demonstrated that this model was able to reproduce the diesel generator sets' dynamic characteristics.

Trust-Based Distributed State Estimation in the Presence of Cyber-Attacks Tested With hardware-in-the-loop

This letter tackles the problem of estimating the state of a plant when communications are corrupted by cyber-attacks or sensor faults occur. An observer structure based on multi-hop subspace decomposition is proposed, which allows each agent to identify its observable and unobservable subspaces and to reconstruct them based on its own measurements and on the information exchanged with the rest of agents. To deal with cyber-attacks, this letter proposes a method based on weighting the information provided by agents according to an assessment of its trustworthiness. An algorithm to dynamically adjust the weighting parameters is provided and the performance of the proposed technique is assessed using a hardware-in-the-loop platform.

SwarmSim: a framework for modeling swarming unmanned aerial vehicles using hardware-in-the-loop

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) swarm applications, algorithms, and control strategies have experienced steady growth and development over the past 15 years. Yet, to date, most swarm development efforts have gone untested and unimplemented. The major inhibitors to successful swarm implementation seem to include the cost of aircraft systems, government imposed airspace restrictions, and the lack of adequate modeling and simulation tools. This paper examines how the open-source OpenEaagles simulation framework was leveraged to bridge this gap to create hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulations. Leveraging OpenEaagles through software extension to create HIL simulations provides developers with a functional capability with which to develop and test the behaviors of scalable and modular swarms of autonomous UAVs. Using HIL-based simulations in this capacity provides assurance that defined behaviors will propagate to live flight tests in the real world. The demonstrations in the work show how the framework enhances and simplifies swarm development through encapsulation, possesses high modularity, provides realistic aircraft modeling, and is capable of simultaneously accommodating multiple hardware-piloted and purely simulated swarming UAVs during simulation.

Actuator-based hardware-in-the-loop is a form of hardware-in-the-loop testing where the hardware components are mechanical systems. hardware-in-the-loop testing of mechanical components requires an additional transfer system which typically comprises sensors and actuators to link the software and hardware. Inaccuracy and instability can occur during actuator-based hardware-in-the-loop testing if the time delay due to the transfer system dynamics is not properly compensated for. This paper presents a new application of the Smith predictor strategy for hardware-in-the-loop testing of an electro-hydraulic fuel control unit for a turbojet engine. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the method for time-delay compensation of actuator-based hardware-in-the-loop testing.
