A hardware-in-the loop real time simulator of a hydroelectric power plant is developed and implemented. The main objective of the simulator is to test the performance of the actual speed and load control systems in these plants. In hardware-in-the-loop simulations real equipment interacts with the simulator through an input/output device. The main characteristics of the process models, hardware and software, and the tools employed for development are described. The functionality of the simulator is demonstrated with an application example in which the real control is emulated with a PC connected to the simulator. simulation accuracy is established by comparing computed results to field data.

We designed an accurate steering motor control method of electric Steer-by-Wire (SBW) sytstem for using on active steering control. We also performed experiments of the method in the hardware-in-the-loop simulation (HILS) environment. The results show that PD feedback control with distrurbance observer which compensates the torque enables accurate and undelayed control of steering angle. The method is also robust while lateral force is acting on the front tires, and its frequency characteristic is enough for using on active SBW controller.

Developing planning and control algorithms for distributed robotic systems involves implementing complex asynchronous algorithms on embedded hardware platforms with limited computational resources. The ability to efficiently validate such algorithms in hardware is critical, yet challenging due to their decentralised nature. We propose the use of hardware-in-the-loop simulation as an intermediate step to improve the process of performing such validation. We present the design and implementation of a custom hardware-in-the-loop simulator consisting of 27 embedded units with wireless communication and a special gateway device for interfacing with a desktop computer. We also present two case studies that illustrate the use and benefits of this system.
