Now, some studies on fault characteristics of flexible direct distribution network, which leads to the poor performance of the traditional DC line protection strategy, and even the phenomenon of protection misoperation and rejection. A new protection strategy based on the transverse differential power is proposed. Firstly, the control strategy of converter station is analyzed, and equivalent model of converter station with control is established. Based on this model, transverse difference power at both ends of DC distribution line in flexible and direct distribution network is calculated. In case of singlepole grounding fault, the transverse power will cause obvious sudden change at the fault time and deviate from the normal value. Based on this, the single pole ground fault protection criterion of flexible and direct distribution network is constructed. Finally, a hardware-in-the-loop simulation test is carried out in MATLAB. simulation results show that the protection method this article proposed identifies faults quickly, and has good resistance characteristics.

This paper presents an approach for performing the hardware-in-the-loop simulation of PWM-based drive utilizing the physics-based phase variable machine model to represent the actual machine. A 6-pole 2hp permanent magnet synchronous machine is used as an example. The physics-based phase variable model of the sample machines is built with parameters (inductances, flux linkages, and the cogging torque) obtained from solutions of nonlinear field computations covering a complete ac cycle. The developed physics-based phase variable model considers the variation of inductances and the flux linkages with the position of the rotor and the nonlinear magnetization property of the core. The accuracy of the developed machine model is compared with the FE model to examine its accuracy. The utilization of the developed physics-based phase variable model in the hardware-in-the-loop simulation of PWM-based machine drive is studied. A practical approach is proposed to achieve the real time simulation of the machine drive having a 50 μs time cycle of the machine model against the 0.1μs time resolution of PWM hardware module. A voltage sensor and a filter are added between the PWM module and the machine model. The filter is purposely designed;its output equals to the actual average voltage produced by the inverter. The impact of the added voltage sensor and the filter is investigated to examine the effectiveness of the proposed approach. Prospective applications of the developed physics-based phase variable model and its utilization in hardware-in-the-loop simulation are suggested.

The SHAKTI pilot is a demonstrator of the IElectrix H2020 project located in Delhi, India. A microgrid solution devoted for an energy community managed by Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL) has been developed and will be set up soon on site. This paper proposes a hardware In the loopsimulation (HIL) approach to test and validate the microgrid control system following the IEEE 2030.8 standard. The result of the extensive testing by using the HIL environment will allow validating the robustness of the microgrid solution against transient events on the grid before the implementation of the solution.

hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation has been widely used in systems development and algorithm verification in many fields. This paper presents a simulation system by using this method in the field of wireless communication. The simulation system is composed of control panel, software module and hardware module. Distribute interactive simulation, collaboration between different subsystems and data security can be accomplished through main control and management. In the part of hardware, we design Ethernet-oriented protocol for module communication and control executive module realized in FPGA (Cyclone IV 4CE115). At last, we introduce energy detection algorithm based on Neyman-pearson criterion which is verified in this system. The result shows that simulation system can accomplish complex simulation by means of data and resource analysis and parameter optimization in real time.

Virtual synchronous machines (VSM) have become a promising solution for grid integration of renewable energy and energy storage systems. To replace the conventional synchronous machines with power-electronics-based VSMs, transient stability under large disturbances must be guaranteed. This paper reveals that the well-known equal area criterion (EAC) may lead to over-conservative prediction. On this basis, the phase portrait analysis is adopted to evaluate the VSM transient stability considering the damping effect. hardware-in-loop (HIL) results are presented to verify the theoretical findings.

Power converters are used for grid integration of renewable sources that can achieve certain objectives through system control. Finite state - model predictive control (FS-MPC) is one of the techniques used for the grid integration of voltage source inverter (VSI) and possessing distinctive features such as fast dynamic performance and ability to incorporate constraints inherently. However, system development is one of the concern for FS-MPC due to computational delay problem. Field programmable gate array (FPGA) based system development is a way to tackle the mentioned problem because of its parallel processing nature. In this paper, FS-MPC is presented for three-phase grid-connected VSI system using modeling-based digital system design approach that is advantageous for analysis, easy debugging and FPGA-based system development. The integrated platform of MATLAB-Simulink and system generator is used for modeling and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation to validate the system.

The operation of a grid-forming converter in unbalanced four-wire systems can benefit from a more flexible control, achievable through per-phase controllers. Nonetheless, the design of this controller requires a theoretical model that deals with nonlinear dynamics and accounts for couplings with other phases. This work presents a method using describing functions for linearization and whole system representation through state-space modeling. simulations of the linear model are compared to results obtained through hardware-in-the-loop simulation.

Supply chain cyberattacks that exploit insecure third-party software are a growing concern for the security of the electric power grid. These attacks seek to deploy malicious software in grid control devices during the fabrication, shipment, installation, and maintenance stages, or as part of routine software updates. Malicious software on grid control devices may inject bad data or execute bad commands, which can cause blackouts and damage power equipment. This paper describes an experimental setup to simulate the software update process of a commercial power relay as part of a hardware-in-the-loop simulation for grid supply chain cyber-security assessment. The laboratory setup was successfully utilized to study three supply chain cyber-security use cases.
